Con estremo piacere prendo atto del ritorno dei carraresi Cage, storica band sorta nel 1987. Ho molto apprezzato lavori come “87/94” (Musea Records – 2005) e “Secret Passage” (Musea Records – 2008), ma successivamente non ho avuto più notizie della band. Iniziarono la carriera artistica partecipando a diversi spettacoli e festival a Siena, Roma e Milano, per poi pubblicare nel 1992 il singolo “View” (Toast Records). Il primo album porta il nome di “The Feebleminded Man” (Toast Records – 1993) ed è costituito da un unico brano di ventuno minuti dal titolo omonimo; questo consente loro di apparire in tv grazie a un videoclip. Qui il gruppo si scioglie per intraprendere strade soliste e dei Cage non se ne parlerà più fino al 2000. Elegante il già citato “Secret Passage”, ma è troppo distante quel 2008 per lasciar speranze di reunion. Mai dire mai (come si suol dire), ed eccoli oggi con una nuova formazione composta da Andrea Griselli (percussioni), Damiano Tacchini (tastiere), Andrea Mignani (chitarra) e Luca Giampietri (voce e basso), e con un nuovo album di otto canzoni intitolato “Tales Of Water”.
L’album è prodotto, mixato e masterizzato da Luca Giampietri presso il White Room Studio, mentre l’artwork porta la firma di Augusto Morelli.
“Waves” presenta da subito la volontà della band di intraprendere un cammino elettro‑acustico con lo sguardo rivolto al suono più moderno dell’Alternative Rock, lasciando a briglia sciolta la melodia altamente orecchiabile, supportata da buoni cori di base. In questo noi italiani siamo molto bravi, lo abbiamo constatato nel tempo.
L’animo gentile traspare sovente in questo album; in “A Still Sky” il sound morbido su cui cantare assieme a Luca Giampietri è piacevole, e la canzone non dimentica il classico, buon assolo di chitarra finale. Il discorso è analogo per “Sun On Me”, dove il pianoforte avvolge l’ascolto coccolando l’ascoltatore.
“Cage” è sempre legata alla formula della canzone, profonda nella leggerezza dei suoni. Questo andamento mi ricorda, per intenzionalità, i primi Marillion di Steve Hogarth, ma con caratteristiche tipicamente italiane.
Il mid‑tempo di “Dreamcatcher” è solare e coinvolgente, un pezzo che strizza l’occhio alla musica più internazionale rispetto a quanto ascoltato finora. Anche “Julia’s Dream” è una coccola sonora, i ritrovati Cage hanno un gusto decisamente spiccato per le buone melodie.
Sale il ritmo in “Mirrors”, dove le chitarre di base donano un tono psichedelico che non guasta, mentre la conclusiva “Flow Of Time” è quanto di meglio la band possa proporre oggi.
“Tales Of Water” è un album di buone canzoni che non hanno la pretesa di strafare, tanto che il termine Progressive Rock forse è poco adeguato ma l’etichetta non conta più di tanto, piuttosto la sostanza, e qui ce n’è davvero molta. Un gradito ritorno, bravi Cage. MS

It is with great pleasure that I note the return of the Carrara‑based band Cage, a historic group formed in 1987. I greatly appreciated works such as “87/94” (Musea Records – 2005) and “Secret Passage” (Musea Records – 2008), but afterwards I lost track of the band. They began their artistic career performing at various shows and festivals in Siena, Rome and Milan, then released the single “View” in 1992 (Toast Records). Their first album, titled “The Feebleminded Man” (Toast Records – 1993), consists of a single 21‑minute track of the same name, which earned them a TV appearance thanks to a video clip. The group then disbanded to pursue solo paths, and Cage was not heard from again until 2000. The already‑mentioned “Secret Passage” is elegant, but 2008 feels too far away to keep hopes of a reunion alive. Never say never (as the saying goes), and here they are today with a new lineup – Andrea Griselli (percussion), Damiano Tacchini (keyboards), Andrea Mignani (guitar) and Luca Giampietri (vocals and bass) – and a new eight‑song album called “Tales Of Water”.
The album is produced, mixed and mastered by Luca Giampietri at White Room Studio, while the artwork is signed by Augusto Morelli.
“Waves” immediately shows the band’s desire to embark on an electro‑acoustic path, looking toward the more modern sound of Alternative Rock, letting a highly catchy melody run free, supported by solid backing vocals. In this we Italians are very good, as we have seen over time.
A gentle spirit often shines through on this album; in “A Still Sky” the soft sound that Luca Giampietri sings over is pleasant, and the song does not forget a classic, fine final guitar solo. The same can be said for “Sun On Me”, where the piano envelops the listener in a warm embrace.
“Cage” remains tied to the song formula, deep in the lightness of its sounds. This approach reminds me, intentionally, of early Marillion with Steve Hogarth, but with distinctly Italian traits.
The mid‑tempo “Dreamcatcher” is sunny and engaging, a piece that tips its hat to more international music than what we’ve heard so far. “Julia’s Dream” is another sonic cuddle; the revived Cage shows a sharp taste for good melodies.
The tempo picks up in “Mirrors”, where the basic guitars give a psychedelic tone that doesn’t hurt, while the closing track “Flow Of Time” is the best the band can offer today.
“Tales Of Water” is an album of good songs that don’t try to overdo it; the term “progressive rock” may even be a bit inadequate, but the label matters little – it’s the substance that counts, and there’s plenty of that. A welcome return – well done, Cage. MS
