Sappiamo bene che nel tempo il Progressive Rock ha vissuto di alti e bassi, tuttavia malgrado le mode passino in continuazione, il genere ha saputo sempre rialzare il capo a conferma della validità della proposta. È successo diverse volte, agli inizi degli anni ’80 e anche nei ’90, quando la scena svedese ha giocato un ruolo fondamentale per la ripresa indicando una nuova strada da percorrere, quella che ha come punto di riferimento i King Crimson. Gruppi come Anekdoten, Anglagard e Landberk sono stati faro per molte band a seguire, portando nuova linfa al movimento. E proprio dalla fusione di Stefan Dimle e Reine Fiske dei separati Landberk, con Johan Wallén della band Agg, che nasce nel 1999 il progetto Paatos.
Ça va sans dire che la musica proposta vive di atmosfere malinconiche e curate, il tutto esaltato dalla scelta di mettere al timone una voce femminile, quella di Petronella Nettermalm. Passano gli anni e la band registra cinque album da studio, attirando a un certo momento anche l’attenzione della grande casa discografica Inside Out, questo per sottolineare il momento in cui il genere riprende quota. La formazione oggi è composta da Petronella Nettermalm (voce), Ulf Ivarsson (basso), Peter Nylander (chitarra), e Huxflux Nettermalm (batteria).
“Ligament” è dunque il sesto album della carriera, e contiene dieci canzoni in classico stile Paatos, oramai una personalità ben definita.
La delicatezza vocale di Petronella ben si lega con la frenesia ritmica di “Chemical Escape”, brano apripista in cui la band evidenzia la causa del nuovo Prog che si distanzia oramai anni luce da quello classico degli anni ’70. Non a caso nel 2004 un certo Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) è al mixaggio del loro album “Kallocain”, a testimonianza della volontà di concentrare l’attenzione verso nuove sonorità. Un'altra prerogativa dei Paatos è la forte propensione verso le dolci melodie, qui arrangiate efficientemente. Effetti eco, gioco voce maschile e femminile fanno di “Beyond The Forest” un brano cinematografico che fotografa alla perfezione scene boschive. Ospite alla voce Mikael Åkerfeldt della band Opeth. Non manca neppure il classico cambio umorale crescente all’interno, in cui le band nordiche sono delle vere e proprie maestre.
Tastiere ponderate aprono “I Deny” con estrema delicatezza. Il movimento paradossalmente riporta alle colonne sonore di quei film italiani anni ’70 grazie all’uso del mandolino. La band non nasconde neppure di nominare la propria musica come “cinematografica”, lo si può leggere anche nel loro sito ufficiale.
 “Ligament” è anche il titolo del breve singolo che anticipa l’album, l’andamento è nuovamente ritmato, come quello di “Chemical Escape”, dove il disagio è palesemente rappresentato attraverso un approccio arabeggiante che conduce a “Post War Limina”. Il brano a sua volta ha breve durata ed è strumentale, due minuti e mezzo effettati e tristi lanciati in un loop senza soluzione di ritorno.
Introspettiva e oscura come la copertina è “I'm Letting Go”, canzone fra le meglio riuscite dell’intero album, vetrina per le capacità vocali di Petronella. Vere atmosfere Landberk si possono apprezzare in “Who Am I”, mentre “Novembre” addentra in luoghi freddi e uggiosi grazie agli effetti di fondo e al suono minimale sfruttato per dare maggiore rilevanza ai testi.
Fra le composizioni più lunghe dell’album c’è “Last Ones Of Our Kind” introdotto da un bel coro di voci femminili. Il pezzo si articola in fughe e stop, dove la ritmica bene eseguita ricopre il ruolo protagonista. A concludere “Svart”, altra perla malinconicamente spettrale.
“Ligament” è il classico album che non fa gridare al miracolo, a sua volta non ha pretese di mutare uno stile oramai radicato, però si lascia ascoltare maledettamente bene! Se amate la scena nordica anni ’90 /’00, qui avrete di che godere. MS

We know that Progressive Rock has experienced its ups and downs over time, yet despite fleeting trends, the genre has always managed to rise again, confirming the validity of its proposal. This happened several times, in the early 80s and 90s, when the Swedish scene played a fundamental role in the revival, pointing to a new path to follow, with King Crimson as a reference point. Bands like Anekdoten, Anglagard, and Landberk became beacons for many bands to follow, bringing new life to the movement. And it's precisely from the fusion of Stefan Dimle and Reine Fiske from Landberk, with Johan Wallén from Agg, that the Paatos project was born in 1999.
It's no surprise that the music proposed lives on melancholic and refined atmospheres, enhanced by the choice of a female voice at the helm, that of Petronella Nettermalm. As the years pass, the band records five studio albums, eventually attracting the attention of the major record label Inside Out, highlighting the genre's resurgence. The current lineup consists of Petronella Nettermalm (vocals), Ulf Ivarsson (bass), Peter Nylander (guitar), and Huxflux Nettermalm (drums).
"Ligament" is thus the sixth album in their career, featuring ten songs in classic Paatos style, now a well-defined personality. Petronella's vocal delicacy blends perfectly with the rhythmic frenzy of "Chemical Escape," the opening track that showcases the band's new Prog style, far removed from the classic 70s sound. Not surprisingly, in 2004, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) mixed their album "Kallocain," testifying to their focus on new sonorities. Another Paatos prerogative is their strong inclination towards sweet melodies, efficiently arranged here. Echo effects, male and female vocal interplay make "Beyond The Forest" a cinematic piece that perfectly captures forest scenes. Guest vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth. The classic mood shift is also present, a hallmark of Nordic bands.
Weighted keyboards open "I Deny" with extreme delicacy, paradoxically evoking the soundtracks of 70s Italian films through the use of the mandolin. The band doesn't hide their "cinematic" approach to music, as stated on their official website.
"Ligament" is also the title of the brief single that anticipates the album, with a rhythmic pace similar to "Chemical Escape," where discomfort is palpably represented through an Arabic-inspired approach leading to "Post War Limina." The track is short and instrumental, a 2.5-minute effects-laden and sad loop with no resolution.
Introspective and dark, like the cover art, is "I'm Letting Go," one of the album's standout tracks, showcasing Petronella's vocal abilities. True Landberk atmospheres can be appreciated in "Who Am I," while "Novembre" explores cold and gloomy places through background effects and minimal sound, highlighting the lyrics.
Among the album's longer compositions is "Last Ones Of Our Kind," introduced by a beautiful female choir. The piece unfolds with escapes and stops, where the well-executed rhythm takes center stage. The album concludes with "Svart," another melancholically spectral pearl.
"Ligament" is the classic album that doesn't claim to be a miracle, nor does it aim to change a style that's now deeply rooted. However, it's damn good to listen to! If you love the Nordic scene of the 90s/00s, you'll enjoy this. MS
