La Germania è sempre protagonista in Europa per quanto concerne la musica in generale; non è da meno quella "colta" e la Progressive Promotion Records ne è testimone con le sue uscite sempre curate nel packaging e nel contenuto sonoro. Nella scuderia numerose band, tra le quali spiccano i Crayon Phase. Provenienti dalla Vestfalia (regione della Germania), sono oggi formati da Raphael Gazal (voce), Wolfgang Bähr (chitarra), Arne Gröschel (batteria), Frank Wendel (tastiere) e Peter Damm (basso).
Amanti dei suoni Hard Rock e Neo Prog, i Crayon Phase rilasciano nel tempo due album, "Within My Recollection" nel 2012 e "Two Hundred Pages" nel 2019, quest'ultimo riceve numerosi consensi. Tuttavia, bisogna attendere ben sei anni per poterli ritrovare con il nuovo album "Synthetic Mind". Anche qui, musica generalmente energica, strutture complesse e arrangiamenti cinematografici che fanno della band un punto di riferimento per chi vuole tentare di modificare le basi del Neo Prog.
Neanche i testi sono banali, e qui vorrei fare anche io una riflessione insieme a voi: perché noi umani parliamo sempre male della tecnologia che provoca dipendenza, dei social e dell'IA, per poi farne uso quotidiano? Non siamo capaci di smettere, ma lo diciamo; questo è davvero un fenomeno particolare e anche argomento dei testi di "Synthetic Mind", assieme a crisi attuali, la polarizzazione sociale e le tensioni politiche, il tutto ambientato in un futuro distopico.
Sei i brani proposti, tutti di media e lunga durata, che varia dai sei minuti e mezzo agli undici.
Il mondo è nel caos; anche questo, quante volte lo abbiamo detto e siamo rimasti inerti spettatori? È così che i Crayon Phase aprono l'album, proprio con "World Of Chaos", un brano in cui potenza e freschezza si fondono assieme, supportati dalla bella voce di Raphael Gazal e da un ritornello quantomeno indovinato. Non possono mancare stop e go, supportati da una ritmica oliata e pulita.
"Mission" prosegue l'intento con passo spedito e parti vocali da cantare assieme alla band, tanto sono orecchiabili. Il meglio, tuttavia, risiede negli assolo di chitarra elettrica, i quali palesano al proprio interno tanta materia Neo Prog.
Si viaggia nel cosmo con "To The Stars", il livello sale, le arie diventano inizialmente sospese... introspettive. Le tastiere sono maggiormente presenti, così i synth, trasportano il sound verso sonorità care a band come Arena e IQ più energici.
"Deep Divide" è un pezzo letteralmente cinematografico, dinamico e lucente. La band richiama stilemi del passato Hard Rock, ma lo fa con l'esperienza di chi vive i giorni moderni. Chitarre e tastiere iniziano "The Synthetic Mind", canzone dal profumo anni '80/'90 per stesura, dove anche l'interpretazione vocale si fa più teatrale.
Il brano che ho maggiormente apprezzato si trova proprio in conclusione, quel "Insurrection" che mi sbatte in faccia tutta l'energia di questa musica articolata ma curata nei particolari.
In conclusione, "Synthetic Mind" è un bel ritorno che mostra una band rodata in tutti i reparti, oltre che ispirata. Chi ama l'Hard Rock e il Neo Prog è pregato vivamente di porre orecchio a questo lavoro, che come minimo non vi lascerà indifferenti. MS

Germany is always a protagonist in Europe when it comes to music in general; it's no different when it comes to "cultivated" music, and Progressive Promotion Records is a testament to this with its releases always carefully crafted in terms of packaging and sound content. Among the many bands in their stable, Crayon Phase stands out. Hailing from Westphalia (a region in Germany), they are currently composed of Raphael Gazal (vocals), Wolfgang Bähr (guitar), Arne Gröschel (drums), Frank Wendel (keyboards), and Peter Damm (bass).
Lovers of Hard Rock and Neo Prog sounds, Crayon Phase has released two albums over time, "Within My Recollection" in 2012 and "Two Hundred Pages" in 2019, the latter receiving numerous accolades. However, it's been six years since they've released new material, and now they're back with "Synthetic Mind". Here too, the music is generally energetic, with complex structures and cinematic arrangements that make the band a reference point for those who want to try to modify the foundations of Neo Prog.
The lyrics aren't trivial either, and I'd like to reflect on this with you: why do humans always speak badly about technology that causes addiction, social media, and AI, only to use them daily? We're unable to stop, but we talk about it; this is a peculiar phenomenon and also a theme in the lyrics of "Synthetic Mind", along with current crises, social polarization, and political tensions, all set in a dystopian future.
Six tracks are proposed, all of medium to long duration, ranging from six and a half to eleven minutes.
The world is in chaos; how many times have we said this and remained inert spectators? That's how Crayon Phase opens the album, with "World Of Chaos", a track where power and freshness blend together, supported by Raphael Gazal's beautiful voice and a catchy chorus. Stop and go sections are also present, supported by a smooth and clean rhythm.
"Mission" continues the intent with a swift pace and vocal parts that are easy to sing along to. The best part, however, lies in the electric guitar solos, which showcase a lot of Neo Prog material.
We travel through space with "To The Stars", the level rises, and the atmosphere becomes initially suspended... introspective. The keyboards are more prominent, along with synths, transporting the sound towards sonorities dear to bands like Arena and IQ, but more energetic.
"Deep Divide" is a literally cinematic piece, dynamic and radiant. The band recalls Hard Rock stylistic elements from the past, but does so with the experience of those who live in modern times. Guitars and keyboards start "The Synthetic Mind", a song with an 80s/90s feel in its composition, where even the vocal interpretation becomes more theatrical.
The track I appreciated the most is the concluding one, "Insurrection", which slaps me in the face with all the energy of this articulated yet carefully crafted music.
In conclusion, "Synthetic Mind" is a great comeback that shows a band that's well-oiled in all departments, as well as inspired. If you love Hard Rock and Neo Prog, you're strongly encouraged to give this work a listen, which will at least leave you not indifferent. MS
