Il maestro polistrumentista della band Versus X, Arne Schäfer, con "The Two-Edged Sword" fa tredici. Una discografia nutrita per qualità sonora genericamente elevata. Il sound proposto è sempre derivativo dalla storia passata, con riferimenti che vanno dai Jethro Tull, passando per Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, ELP, UK, Rush e molti altri ancora, a testimonianza di un amore viscerale per questo genere musicale.
Come sempre, Arne suona tutti gli strumenti, solo Ebi Graef suona la batteria, con una attenzione particolare alla produzione e al mixaggio, i quali donano al suono finale enfasi, dinamicità naturale e trasparenza, tanto da rendere i singoli strumenti ben definiti fra di loro.
I testi, per lo più astratti, esplorano l'attualità della società moderna, la politica e i social media, nonché concetti estetici e filosofici.
I tredici minuti di "In Silence" mettono subito in evidenza gli intenti, proponendo un Progressive Rock articolato, pregno di cambi umorali e ritornelli piacevoli. Questa è la musica che generalmente un Prog fan vorrebbe sempre ascoltare, fra richiami ai tempi che furono e modernità, un collage perfetto sotto ogni aspetto. Curate le parti tastieristiche e orchestrali di sottofondo, mentre la chitarra elettrica accompagna il cantato sino a giungere oltre la metà della mini-suite per lanciarsi in un ottimo assolo al fulmicotone.
Altra lunga cavalcata nel pentagramma giunge da "The Two-Edged Sword"; Schäfer tende a stamparti nella memoria un andamento generale per poi variarlo di tanto in tanto con brevi fughe strumentali. Questo brano, con Mellotron a sostegno, ricorda passaggi nel Neo Prog in stile IQ.
Non ci si discosta dai consueti tredici minuti neppure con "Abstraction", una finestra aperta in una stanza dall'aria consumata. Qui risiede un andamento davvero orecchiabile che potrebbe piacere moltissimo agli appassionati della musica di Clive Nolan (Pendragon, Arena, Shadowland, Imaginaerium e altro ancora) in senso generale.
Il piano inizia "Temporary Turbulence", e sembra di trovarci in pieno autunno, quando la notte scende prima e le nuvole rendono tutto più malinconico dopo giornate di sole. In questo sono stati bravi i Genesis, che ne hanno fatto storia. Apogee è molto attento nel ricercare arie giuste per esprimere i propri concetti; lo si evince anche all'ascolto di "The Plain Wave", dove risiedono tutti gli ingredienti giusti per un brano Progressive Rock DOC, Mellotron compreso. Greve e monolitico nell'incedere, il movimento si fa ascoltare con piacere.
In chiusura, un'altra suite, "Forsaken Paradise". Orchestrale, ampia, variegata, una vera immersione nella musica totale, dove si uniscono più generi fra di loro per realizzare un bel puzzle.
Passione, amore per il Prog, preparazione strumentale, idee: queste, in definitiva, sono le carte in mano ad Apogee. Nulla da aggiungere, se non un consiglio: dategli un ascolto attento e ripetuto, perché merita. MS

The multi-instrumentalist mastermind behind the band Versus X, Arne Schäfer, with "The Two-Edged Sword" marks his thirteenth release. A discography rich in generally high sound quality. The proposed sound is always derivative of the past, with references ranging from Jethro Tull to Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, ELP, UK, Rush, and many others, testifying to a visceral love for this musical genre.
As always, Arne plays all the instruments, with Ebi Graef on drums, and a particular attention to production and mixing, which gives the final sound emphasis, natural dynamics, and transparency, making each instrument clearly defined.
The lyrics, mostly abstract, explore modern society, politics, and social media, as well as aesthetic and philosophical concepts.
The thirteen minutes of "In Silence" immediately highlight the intentions, proposing an articulated Progressive Rock, rich in mood changes and catchy choruses. This is the kind of music that a Prog fan would always want to listen to, between nods to the past and modernity, a perfect collage in every aspect. The keyboard and orchestral parts are carefully crafted, while the electric guitar accompanies the vocals until the midpoint of the mini-suite, before launching into an excellent solo.
Another long ride through the score comes from "The Two-Edged Sword"; Schäfer tends to imprint a general rhythm in your memory, only to vary it occasionally with brief instrumental excursions. This song, with Mellotron support, recalls passages in Neo-Prog style, à la IQ.
The thirteen-minute mark is not an exception with "Abstraction", a window open into a room with a worn-out atmosphere. Here lies a truly catchy rhythm that would appeal to fans of Clive Nolan's music (Pendragon, Arena, Shadowland, Imaginaerium, and more) in general.
The piano starts "Temporary Turbulence", and it feels like being in the midst of autumn, when night falls earlier and clouds make everything more melancholic after sunny days. Genesis was brilliant at this. Apogee is very attentive to finding the right atmosphere to express their concepts; this is evident even in "The Plain Wave", where all the right ingredients for a Progressive Rock DOC song are present, including Mellotron. Grave and monolithic in its progression, the movement is enjoyable to listen to.
In closing, another suite, "Forsaken Paradise". Orchestral, wide, varied, a true immersion in total music, where multiple genres come together to create a beautiful puzzle.
Passion, love for Prog, instrumental preparation, ideas: these are the cards in Apogee's hands. Nothing to add, except a piece of advice: give them a careful and repeated listen, because they deserve it. MS
