Probabilmente i più ferrati di voi sull'argomento Progressive Rock Italiano già conoscono il nome di Daniele Olia, membro fondatore della band savonese Qirsh, autrice di due ottimi album come "Sola Andata" (Lizard – 2013) e "Aspera Tempora Parte I" (2020 Lizard).
Olia forma oggi un'altra band, gli Arianuova, avvalendosi di musicisti come Luca Bonomi (batteria), Massimo Zanon (voce), e Michele Spinoni (chitarra).
"Volevo Andare Altrove" è un concept su un argomento che più o meno ci accomuna tutti: chi, una volta nella vita, non ha pensato di andare via e di partire per un posto anche senza meta? Credo ognuno di noi. Attorno a questo desiderio si descrivono moltissime emozioni. Il Progressive Rock sposa a pieno la causa, essendo un genere molto malleabile e ricco di sonorità, ma questo da solo non basta, serve necessariamente una buona fantasia e una capacità compositiva di certo non effimera. Ecco quindi che l'esperienza di Daniele Olia si palesa nei otto brani del disco con consapevolezza e eleganza fra classicismi (organo, archi, piano, chitarre acustiche), momenti Rock ed elettronici addizionati da effetti vocali. La lezione del passato è pienamente assorbita, soprattutto quella degli anni '70 (in primis Pink Floyd), ma anche gli anni '80 della New Wave.
Molto curato ed esaustivo sull'argomento trattato è il libretto che accompagna il supporto ottico su progetto grafico di Olia stesso contenente testi, immagini evocative e descrizioni, tutti ingredienti che qualificano maggiormente il prodotto finale.
Il Progressive Rock degli Arianuova si basa soprattutto sulle tastiere, esse sono sia protagoniste delle melodie che tappeto alla struttura del brano, un poco come accadeva alla musica delle Orme e lo strumentale iniziale "Rota Fortunae" ne è subito la prova. Sono quelle sonorità senza tempo che non riesci a collocare in un contesto ben definito. Poi giunge "La Strada Buona" ad apportare il sound in un ottica ben definita, fra formula canzone tradizionale e cura per le parti vocali. Andare altrove, la volontà di partire; una ricerca nell'Io in cui adottare una scelta perché si sente il bisogno di aria nuova.
La chitarra elettrica di Spinoni tesse atmosfere grevi in "Rainbow Bridge", in attesa delle tastiere che non tardano ad ampliare il sound. La cadenza vocale si ripete medesima al brano precedente, ma è il finale Hard Rock a sorprendere e a regalare emozioni forti su una batteria e un andamento alla "One Of These Days" (Pink Floyd).
Non disdegnano soluzioni ipnotiche e psichedeliche come in "Downfall", qui si dipanano dialoghi tratti da servizi tv, ed è musica cinemantica. La ritmica semplice e diretta di Bonomi pulsa in continuazione e sopra di essa si esprimono tutti gli strumenti.
Ritornano i Pink Floyd sulle arie di "La Quiete Dopo La Tempesta", brano che alza non di poco le qualità della band, in un continuo cambio strumentale a tessere la struttura melodica. Il temporale coglie di sorpresa e le chitarre elettriche si intersecano con i fulmini, ma il sole non tarda a fare sua presenza. Arpeggi di chitarra e effetti di tastiere sottolineano la sua venuta, sembra quasi di ammirare le gocce d'acqua scolare lentamente dalle foglie per poi tuffarsi sul terreno. Il finale di chitarra elettrica è gioia per gli estimatori sia dei Genesis che della band di Gilmour. Tanta materia e storia in otto minuti abbondanti di grosse emozioni.
"La Commedia E' Finita" riporta il tiro verso la canzone, ma è un momento, Olia rilancia in scorribande questa volta dal retrogusto Neo Prog, Mellotron compreso.
In un disco di Progressive Rock che si rispetti c'è la suite, non una regola ferrea ma generica, e qui s'intitola "L'Orologio Che Andava All'Indietro". Facilmente intuibile il territorio in cui si va a parare, dopo cambi umorali come nei fuochi d'artificio il finale è roboante, la band spara tutte le cartucce a disposizione per un risultato ampiamente emozionante.
L'album si conclude con il richiamo sonoro "Fortunae Rota Volvitur", quasi un requiem sinfonico su cui meditare.
"Volevo Andare Altrove" è un disco che sorprende, ma soprattutto emoziona, e lo fa con il rispetto della storia ma anche con la consapevolezza dei propri mezzi. Questo è il Prog Italiano, orgoglio mondiale per chi fa ancora della musica un credo, e qui però siamo rimasti davvero in pochi, per questo motivo... Spargiamo il verbo e facciamo conoscere anche gli Arianuova perché lo meritano e bene ci rappresentano. MS

Those of you who are well-versed in Italian Progressive Rock probably already know the name Daniele Olia, founding member of the Savonese band Qirsh, author of two excellent albums such as "Sola Andata" (Lizard – 2013) and "Aspera Tempora Parte I" (2020 Lizard).

"Volevo Andare Altrove" is a concept album about a theme that unites us all: who hasn't thought of leaving and going somewhere, even without a destination, at least once in their life? I think everyone has. Many emotions are described around this desire. Progressive Rock fully embraces the cause, being a genre that is very malleable and rich in sounds, but this alone is not enough; a good imagination and compositional skills are also necessary. This is where Daniele Olia's experience comes into play, evident in the eight tracks of the album, with classicism (organ, strings, piano, acoustic guitars), Rock moments, and electronic additions with vocal effects. The lesson of the past is fully absorbed, especially that of the '70s (primarily Pink Floyd), but also the '80s New Wave.
The booklet accompanying the optical support is very well-crafted and exhaustive on the subject, with graphics designed by Olia himself, containing lyrics, evocative images, and descriptions, all ingredients that further qualify the final product.
Arianuova's Progressive Rock is based primarily on keyboards, which are both protagonists of the melodies and a backdrop to the song structure, much like the music of Le Orme, and the initial instrumental "Rota Fortunae" is immediate proof. These are timeless sounds that you can't place in a specific context. Then comes "La Strada Buona", bringing the sound into a well-defined perspective, between traditional song formula and attention to vocal parts. Going elsewhere, the desire to leave; a search within oneself to make a choice because one feels the need for new air.
Spinoni's electric guitar weaves heavy atmospheres in "Rainbow Bridge", awaiting the keyboards that soon expand the sound. The vocal cadence is repeated similarly to the previous track, but it's the Hard Rock finale that surprises and gives strong emotions on a drum and a pace reminiscent of "One Of These Days" (Pink Floyd).
They don't shy away from hypnotic and psychedelic solutions like in "Downfall", where TV show dialogues unfold, and it's cinematic music. Bonomi's simple and direct rhythm pulses continuously, and all the instruments express themselves above it.
Pink Floyd returns in the air of "La Quiete Dopo La Tempesta", a track that significantly raises the band's quality, with a continuous instrumental change weaving the melodic structure. The storm catches you off guard, and the electric guitars intersect with lightning, but the sun doesn't take long to make its presence known. Guitar arpeggios and keyboard effects underline its arrival, it's almost like admiring water droplets slowly dripping from the leaves to plunge into the ground. The electric guitar finale is a joy for fans of both Genesis and Gilmour's band. So much material and history in over eight minutes of great emotions.
"La Commedia E' Finita" brings the focus back to the song, but it's a moment, Olia launches into excursions this time with a Neo Prog flavor, including Mellotron.
In a respectable Progressive Rock album, there's the suite, not a strict rule but a generic one, and here it's called "L'Orologio Che Andava All'Indietro". It's easy to guess where it's headed, after mood changes like fireworks, the finale is roaring, the band fires all the ammunition at their disposal for a highly emotional result.
The album concludes with the sonic recall "Fortunae Rota Volvitur", almost a symphonic requiem to meditate on.
"Volevo Andare Altrove" is an album that surprises, but above all, it moves, and it does so with respect for history and awareness of its own means. This is Italian Prog, a global pride for those who still make music a creed, and here we're really few left, for this reason... let's spread the word and make Arianuova known because they deserve it and represent us well.
