Chi ama l'Hard Rock "made in Italy" non resterà certo indifferente ai nomi di Marcello Spera (StreetLore) e Andrew Trabelsi (Shining Line, StreetLore, Füel For Tunes, ex-Mastro). Il cantante e il poliedrico chitarrista/tastierista sono stati infatti membri degli storici Alchemy, band che, dopo gli ottimi riscontri dell'album "Dyadic", ha purtroppo subìto una divergenza di vedute culminata nello scioglimento.
Oggi, insieme al batterista Andrea Oliverio, i due tornano in formazione trio fondando i Mayhem Mavericks. I più attenti avranno notato l'assenza di un bassista di ruolo nella line-up; per ovviare a ciò, il gruppo si è avvalso della collaborazione di numerosi musicisti, tra cui Vanessa Odry, Angelo Sasso (StreetLore, Airbound), Stefania Sarre (Soul Seller, Shining Line), Mauro Balestra e Matteo Castelli (ex Alchemy). Questo approccio conferisce al sound una notevole varietà e un'impronta distinta per ogni brano. Gli ospiti, tuttavia, non si limitano alla sezione ritmica: è possibile infatti apprezzare anche le incursioni chitarristiche di Cristiano Stefana (ex Alchemy).
Si tratta di un debutto, seppur firmato da musicisti rodati, che tenta di apportare all'Hard Rock una visione futuristica e matura, pur restando rispettosa del passato. Già l'apertura "Divide" dimostra come, anche in tre, si possa creare un suono ampio e pieno, caratterizzato da un ottimo uso delle voci e da un refrain micidiale al limite dell'AOR.
Il singolo "Killing Eyes" tratta il tema dell'ossessione e della difficoltà nell'allontanarsi da ciò che ci attrae profondamente, ma che sappiamo essere pericoloso. La sezione ritmica affronta il pezzo di petto, lasciando comunque spazio ad ampie aperture melodiche. Mi piacerebbe ascoltare "Midnight Crawler" dal vivo per godere appieno della sua energia: è impossibile restare fermi durante l'ascolto, con una prova vocale di Spera sopra le righe che tocca vette altissime.
Un delicato intreccio di piano e tastiere apre "With Me", una piacevolissima tregua in cui i Mayhem Mavericks dimostrano di eccellere anche nelle ballate (nota di merito per il lavoro della chitarra elettrica). Si torna poi a premere sull'acceleratore con "I Can Feel The Heartache", un brano dal sapore "stradaiolo" che profuma di anni '80, non lontano dai Saxon di "Innocence Is No Excuse".
"Eclipse" è un mid-tempo ottimamente ricercato, che basa la propria forza su un ritornello orecchiabile di chiara ispirazione americana, arricchito da tastiere di sottofondo che donano movimento. Effetti elettronici accompagnano invece la pirotecnica "Join The Fight", supportata da cori trascinanti e chitarre mai dome. Il disco procede con grande equilibrio, alternando momenti potenti ad altri più ponderati, come nel caso dell'ottima "More To Ask", rendendo l'ascolto fluido e privo di flessioni.
I motori tornano a rombare in "Best Of Me", l'episodio più muscoloso del lotto, mentre la cultura musicale dei singoli componenti emerge prepotentemente in "One Day In A Lifetime", un pezzo possente quasi al limite del Progressive Metal. I titoli di coda spettano infine all'esplosiva "Road With No End".
Benvenuti Mayhem Mavericks: una realtà che amplia lo spettro dell'Hard Rock italiano con professionalità e un gusto compositivo non comune. Se questo disco fosse stato inciso da una band straniera, probabilmente staremmo qui a tessere lodi ben più sperticate; si sa che siamo esterofili, ma la musica non ha nazioni né confini. Those who love the Hard Rock sound coming out of Italy will certainly not remain indifferent to the names Marcello Spera (StreetLore) and Andrew Trabelsi (Shining Line, StreetLore, Füel For Tunes, ex-Mastro). The singer and the multi-talented guitarist/keyboardist were members of the historic band Alchemy, which, following the success of the album "Dyadic", unfortunately suffered internal creative differences that led to their dissolution.
Today, joined by drummer Andrea Oliverio, they return as a trio to form Mayhem Mavericks. Keener observers will notice the absence of a permanent bassist in the lineup; to address this, the group enlisted the help of several guest musicians, including Vanessa Odry, Angelo Sasso (StreetLore, Airbound), Stefania Sarre (Soul Seller, Shining Line), Mauro Balestra, and Matteo Castelli (ex-Alchemy). This approach brings a great deal of variety to the band’s sound, giving each track a distinct character. However, the guests aren't limited to the rhythm section; listeners can also enjoy the guitar contributions of Cristiano Stefana (ex-Alchemy).
While this is a debut, it is one crafted by seasoned veterans of the scene who attempt to bring a more futuristic vision to Hard Rock while remaining mature and respectful of the past. The opener "Divide" immediately proves that even as a trio, they can create a vast, full sound, characterized by excellent vocal work and a killer refrain bordering on AOR.
The album’s lead single, "Killing Eyes", deals with obsession and the difficulty of pulling away from something that attracts us deeply but may be dangerous. The failure is around the corner and perhaps permanent. The rhythm section tackles the track head-on, while still leaving room for expansive melodic sections. I would love to hear "Midnight Crawler" live to fully experience its energy—it’s impossible to stay still while listening. Here, Spera’s vocal performance is over the top, reaching soaring heights. A gentle blend of piano and keyboards opens "With Me", a very pleasant respite where Mayhem Mavericks prove they can handle ballads just as well, followed by some standout electric guitar work.
Then it’s back to the gas pedal with the dusty, "road-ready" track "I Can Feel The Heartache", a song steeped in history, particularly that of the 80s—not too far removed from Saxon’s "Innocence Is No Excuse". "Eclipse" is a sophisticated mid-tempo track that finds its strength in a catchy, American-inspired chorus. Background keyboards add movement, making it even more engaging.
Electronic effects accompany the pyrotechnic "Join The Fight", a song supported by impressive backing vocals and relentless electric guitars. Furthermore, the album proceeds with great balance, alternating powerful moments with more considered ones, as seen in the excellent "More To Ask", making for a smooth listen without any weak points.
The engines roar in "Best Of Me", the band’s most muscular side, while the musical culture of the individual members shines through in "One Day In A Lifetime", a powerful piece bordering on Progressive Metal. The closing credits belong to the explosive "Road With No End".
Welcome, Mayhem Mavericks: a fine addition that further expands the spectrum of Italian Hard Rock with great professionalism and a flair for composition that is truly rare. If this record had been released by a foreign band, we would be here singing its praises even more loudly; we know we tend to favor international acts, but music has neither nationality nor borders.
