I norvegesi Sykofant sembrano averci preso gusto; o almeno così verrebbe da dire se non fosse che il precedente EP "Red Sun" (2025) e questo nuovo "Leaves" sono destinati a confluire, in futuro, in un unico LP e CD. Nel frattempo, godiamoci questa seconda parte composta da tre brani.
Se in "Red Sun" il gruppo esplorava territori brulli e aridi attraverso una psichedelia hard ai confini del Prog Rock, con "Leaves" lo scenario cambia radicalmente. Il percorso si addentra in foreste lussureggianti, mutando anche il sound grazie a maggiori contrasti dinamici e a una sezione ritmica più ricercata.
La formazione, composta da Emil Moen (chitarra, voce), Melvin Treider (batteria), Per Semb (chitarra) e Sindre Haugen (basso), vanta un'ottima amalgama, evidente fin dall'ascolto di "Roots And Canopy". Qui, ambientazioni rilassate dettate da note "sgocciolanti" di chitarra acustica e tastiere strizzano l'occhio al classicismo tanto caro al Progressive Rock. Come già accaduto nelle pubblicazioni passate, i Pink Floyd restano il principale punto di riferimento, pur lasciando spazio a una spiccata personalità. L’improvviso crescendo stupisce con i suoi stop & go, immergendo l'ascoltatore in un'atmosfera perfettamente rappresentata dalle matite di Lars Kvernberg, autore dell'artwork.
Il brano sfuma nel successivo "Mycelium March", dove gli anni '70 si palesano in modalità "Echoes"; l'assolo di chitarra elettrica che ne consegue farà venire i brividi a tutti i seguaci di Waters e soci. Tuttavia, il piatto forte dell'EP è "Heart Of The Woods": sedici minuti di Prog che toccano sonorità tipicamente nordiche, riassumendo quanto espresso finora. Il cantato è di buon livello, supportato da doppie voci e da arrangiamenti più complessi e stratificati rispetto al passato.
In generale predomina l'anima riflessiva del gruppo, intervallata da assoli epici e crescendo sonori sempre funzionali a mantenere vivo l'interesse degli appassionati. A metà traccia si possono persino scorgere coralità in stile Porcupine Tree.
È già chiaro che, quando i due EP verranno uniti, ne risulterà un album altamente coinvolgente. Il pre-ordine sarà disponibile dal 23 gennaio anche su Bandcamp: consiglio vivamente l'acquisto, perché certi dischi vanno gustati su supporto fisico per appagare non solo l'udito, ma anche il tatto, la vista e l'olfatto. I Sykofant sono una realtà che va sostenuta affinché questo genere possa continuare a emozionare e sorprendere, nonostante i soliti luoghi comuni. Bellissimo. MS

The Oslo-based Norwegian band Sykofant seems to have developed a taste for it; or at least, that's what one might say if it weren't for the fact that the previous EP "Red Sun" (2025) and this new one, "Leaves", are destined to merge into a single LP and CD in the future. In the meantime, let’s enjoy this second installment consisting of three tracks.
While in "Red Sun" the group explored barren, sun-scorched territories through a Hard Psychedelia that bordered on Prog Rock, with "Leaves" the narrative shifts radically. The journey ventures into lush forests, changing the sound with greater dynamic contrasts and a more sophisticated rhythmic section.
The line-up, featuring Emil Moen (guitar, vocals), Melvin Treider (drums), Per Semb (guitar), and Sindre Haugen (bass), boasts excellent chemistry, which is evident from the very first listen of "Roots And Canopy". Here, relaxed atmospheres dictated by "dripping" acoustic guitar notes and keyboards nod to the classicism so dear to Progressive Rock. As with their past releases, Pink Floyd remains the primary point of reference, while still leaving plenty of room for a distinct personality. The sudden crescendo surprises with its stop & go movements, immersing the listener in an environment perfectly depicted by Lars Kvernberg’s pencils in the accompanying artwork.
The track fades into the following "Mycelium March", where the 70s manifest in an "Echoes" style; the subsequent electric guitar solo is bound to give chills to all followers of Waters and company. However, the highlight of the EP is "Heart Of The Woods": sixteen minutes of Prog that touches upon typically Nordic sounds, summarizing everything expressed so far. The vocals are of a high standard, supported by double-tracking and arrangements that are more complex and layered than in the past.
Overall, the more reflective side of the group predominates, interspersed with epic guitar solos and sonic crescendos that are always effective in maintaining the interest of Prog fans. Midway through, one can even detect vocal harmonies reminiscent of Porcupine Tree.
It is already clear that when the two EPs are combined, the result will be a highly engaging album. Pre-orders will be available starting January 23rd, including on Bandcamp. I highly recommend it, as certain albums are meant to be enjoyed on physical media to satisfy not only the ears but also the senses of touch, sight, and smell. Sykofant is an act that deserves support to ensure this genre continues to move and surprise us, despite the usual clichés. Beautiful. MS
