Generalmente non parlo di EP in questo blog poiché, essendo attempato, sono amante di quella che possiamo definire "la ciccia", ossia la molta sostanza. Intendiamoci bene: in un EP capita pure di ascoltare brani più belli che in un album stesso, però l'ho sempre ritenuto un antipasto per la sua durata, perché in effetti così è. Non sempre sono anticipazioni, esistono EP con brani esclusi da qualche album, ma non per questo considerati minori. Per cui, ben vengano i suddetti supporti, anche se tendenzialmente non li tratto in una recensione. Per concludere il preambolo, aggiungo oltretutto che fra singoli ed EP ne escono centinaia al giorno, impossibile seguirli tutti.
Faccio un'eccezione per i G.O.L.E.M. perché in questo momento sono molto ispirati e autori di un ottimo album recentemente uscito nel 2024, intitolato “Gathering Of The Legendary Elephant Monsters”. Da Piacenza, Parma e Lodi, i G.O.L.E.M. (da non confondere con la band tedesca di Krautrock) propongono un Hard Prog fatto di tastiere che non necessita di chitarre elettriche; e sfido chiunque ad accorgersene durante l'ascolto.
La band oggi è formata da Paolo Apollo Negri (organo, sintetizzatori), Emil Quattrini (tastiere), Marco Zammati (basso), Francesco Lupi (batteria), e Marco Vincini (voce).
“Still Life” possiamo considerarla una mini-suite di quasi quindici minuti, però suddivisa in tre movimenti.
Quello che salta all'orecchio è il mutamento che il gruppo sta vivendo, passando da un Hard Prog classico verso un Gothic Prog oscuro e più vicino alla formula canzone.
“Still Life (pt.1) Born Erased” apre con le tastiere in evidenza, e gli anni ’70 sono avanti a noi. Monolitico e graffiante grazie all'uso dell'Hammond, il brano palesa un'attenzione particolare per la scelta delle melodie. Sì, ci sono dei déjà vu, ma tutto sommato questo è il genere. Bellissima la prova vocale di Marco Vincini, che in alcuni istanti mi richiama alla memoria Bernardo Lanzetti.
“Still Life (pt.2) Sons Of Death” ha un inizio incentrato sul basso e molto Pinkfloydiano nelle atmosfere eteree. L'oscurità cala su di noi e non ci lascia più. Doom di classe e psichedelico.
“Still Life (pt.3) Still Dreaming” emana uno squarcio di luce, una sorta di quiete dopo la tempesta; ma la copertina dell'album ben rappresenta il contenuto sonoro di questo EP, che mostra la band in fase di muta. A questo punto sono curioso di ascoltare i prossimi passi, intanto, godo dei quindici minuti di magia oscura di “Still Life”. Un antipasto? MS.

I generally don't talk about EPs on this blog, since, being a bit older, I'm a fan of what we can call "the meat", i.e., a lot of substance. Let's be clear: in an EP, you can sometimes listen to tracks that are even more beautiful than those in an album itself, but I've always considered it an appetizer due to its length, because that's what it is. Not always are they previews; there are EPs with tracks excluded from some albums, but not considered minor for that reason. So, welcome to these formats, even if I tend not to review them. To conclude the preamble, I add that hundreds of singles and EPs are released every day, and it's impossible to follow them all.
I make an exception for G.O.L.E.M. because they are currently very inspired and authors of an excellent album recently released in 2024, titled “Gathering Of The Legendary Elephant Monsters”. From Piacenza, Parma, and Lodi, G.O.L.E.M. (not to be confused with the German Krautrock band) propose a Hard Prog made of keyboards that doesn't need electric guitars; and I challenge anyone to notice during the listening.
The band today is formed by Paolo Apollo Negri (organ, synthesizers), Emil Quattrini (keyboards), Marco Zammati (bass), Francesco Lupi (drums), and Marco Vincini (vocals).
“Still Life” can be considered a mini-suite of almost fifteen minutes, but divided into three movements.
What stands out is the change that the group is undergoing, moving from classic Hard Prog to a darker Gothic Prog closer to the song formula.
“Still Life (pt.1) Born Erased” opens with keyboards in evidence, and the 1970s are ahead of us. Monolithic and biting thanks to the use of the Hammond, the track shows a particular attention to melody choice. Yes, there are déjà vu moments, but overall, this is the genre. Beautiful vocal performance by Marco Vincini, who in some moments reminds me of Bernardo Lanzetti.
“Still Life (pt.2) Sons Of Death” has a beginning focused on the bass and very Pink Floyd-like in its ethereal atmospheres. Darkness falls upon us and never leaves. Classy Doom and psychedelic.
“Still Life (pt.3) Still Dreaming” emits a burst of light, a sort of calm after the storm; but the album cover well represents the sound content of this EP, which shows the band in a phase of change. At this point, I'm curious to listen to their next steps; meanwhile, I enjoy the fifteen minutes of dark magic of “Still Life”. An appetizer? MS.
