Quando si sente il bisogno di una carica sonora, di quelle capaci di rimetterti di buon umore, il genere AOR è caldamente consigliato. Portato al successo mondiale da colossi come Survivor, Journey e Boston, ma soprattutto dai Toto, questo stile propone una musica elettrica sì, ma dalle ampie aperture melodiche e, soprattutto, di grande classe. Anche in Italia, grazie ad etichette come Art Of Melody Music e Burning Minds Music Group, abbiamo conosciuto molte band dedite a queste sonorità. Pur esistendo altre strade, come l'autoproduzione o label differenti, queste realtà si caratterizzano per la cura maniacale dei particolari, specialmente in fase di incisione.
Un esempio perfetto sono i Mindfeels, giunti oggi al secondo album dopo "XXenty" del 2017. Per questo nuovo lavoro, il mixaggio e la masterizzazione sono stati affidati a Roberto Priori (Danger Zone, Wheels Of Fire, Raintimes, Michele Luppi, StreetLore): praticamente una garanzia.
I Mindfeels, originari di Biella, nascono nel 1994 proprio come cover band dei Toto con il nome Dejanira; per eseguire quel repertorio, com'è noto, è necessaria una tecnica strumentale eccellente. Vi consiglio di recuperare il loro debutto "XXenty": fu un esordio folgorante per la formazione composta da Davide Gilardino (voce, cori), Luca Carlomagno (chitarre, programmazione tastiere), Roberto Barazzotto (basso) e Italo Graziana (batteria, percussioni, cori e programmazione tastiere), che operano ancora oggi con la medesima line-up. Quel disco ricevette consensi tali da permettere al gruppo di intraprendere un tour italiano condividendo il palco con Boulevard e Soul Seller.
In "2WO" troviamo anche ospiti speciali: Michael Kratz e Kasper Viinberg (voci e percussioni in "The Other Side Of You") e Aldo Bulgheroni (assolo di synth in "Passengers"). Il booklet che accompagna il CD è molto curato, completo di testi, foto e note di copertina introduttive scritte dallo storico conduttore radiofonico Marco Garavelli (LineaRock).
L'album, composto da tredici brani, si apre con "Out Of Spin", una breve intro atmosferica che conduce a "We Will Make It": un pezzo classico in cui la voce si mette in mostra attraverso un ritornello gradevole, inframezzato da intriganti assoli di chitarra. La solidità del sound aumenta con "Fading Lights", brano ben strutturato che attinge a piene mani dalla scuola americana.
"Again In The Wind" è una semi-ballata in cui gli arrangiamenti giocano un ruolo primario, mentre "Something New" (uno dei singoli) narra di un amore profondo fatto di promesse eterne, dove il sentimento diventa forza e speranza. Non mancano i déjà-vu stilistici: "Flying Away From This World" è costruita su quegli stilemi che hanno reso popolare l'AOR, così come la ballata "Here With Me", equilibrata in ogni reparto.
Il singolo "The Other Side Of You" analizza le difficoltà nel mantenere sincera una relazione, evidenziando come i nostri lati nascosti possano prendere il sopravvento. La canzone è matura, con un ritornello trascinante che invita al sing-along. Con i suoi sei minuti abbondanti, "Passengers" è il brano più lungo del disco, dove i Mindfeels sfoggiano tutto il loro arsenale tecnico. "Dreamland" è tra le mie preferite: incalzante e molto vicina allo stile dei Toto. Seguono altri ottimi pezzi: "You Can't Let It Go" è un piacevole suggello, mentre "Run Away" risulta perfettamente bilanciata tra strofe e ritornello. Chiude il disco la strumentale "The Wait", una piccola gemma scorrevole con inaspettate reminiscenze dei King Crimson.
"2WO" è un disco positivo, il compagno ideale per una giornata impegnativa o un lungo viaggio in auto. Sono quei momenti in cui ti ricarichi e pensi che, in fondo, la vita è bella. Basta davvero poco.

When you need a sonic boost—the kind that puts you in a good mood—the AOR genre is highly recommended. Brought to global success by giants like Survivor, Journey, and Boston, but above all Toto, this style offers electric music that is rich in melodic openings and, most importantly, pure class. In Italy, thanks to labels like Art Of Melody Music and Burning Minds Music Group, we have discovered many bands dedicated to these sounds. While other paths exist, such as self-production or different labels, these two stand out for their meticulous attention to detail, especially in the recording process.
A perfect example is Mindfeels, now on their second album following 2017's "XXenty". For this new release, mixing and mastering were handled by Roberto Priori (Danger Zone, Wheels Of Fire, Raintimes, Michele Luppi, StreetLore)—essentially a seal of quality.
Hailing from Biella, Mindfeels started as a Toto cover band in 1994 under their original name, Dejanira. As is well known, performing that repertoire requires truly excellent instrumental technique. I highly recommend tracking down their debut "XXenty"; it was a beautiful start for the lineup consisting of Davide Gilardino (vocals, backing vocals), Luca Carlomagno (lead, rhythm, and acoustic guitars, keyboard programming), Roberto Barazzotto (bass), and Italo Graziana (drums, percussion, backing vocals, and keyboard programming), who still operate as the same unit today. That record received enough acclaim to allow the group to tour Italy, sharing the stage with Boulevard and Soul Seller.
"2WO" also features special guests such as Michael Kratz and Kasper Viinberg (vocals and percussion on "The Other Side Of You") and Aldo Bulgheroni (synth solo on "Passengers"). The accompanying booklet is well-crafted, complete with lyrics, photos, and introductory liner notes written by the famous radio host Marco Garavelli (LineaRock).
The thirteen-track album opens with "Out Of Spin", a brief atmospheric intro that leads into "We Will Make It": a classic track where the vocals shine through a pleasant chorus interspersed with intriguing guitar solos. The sound gains further solidity with "Fading Lights", a well-structured track that draws heavily from the American school of AOR.
"Again In The Wind" is a semi-ballad where the arrangements take a primary role, while "Something New" (one of the singles) tells of a deep love built on eternal promises, where love is both strength and hope. The album doesn't shy away from stylistic déjà-vu: "Flying Away From This World" is built on the very characteristics that made AOR popular. And then there is the mandatory ballad, "Here With Me", perfectly balanced in every department.
The single "The Other Side Of You" highlights the difficulties of keeping a relationship sincere, showing how our hidden sides can often take over. The song is mature and catchy, with a chorus that is impossible not to sing along to. Clocking in at over six minutes, "Passengers" is the longest track on the album, where Mindfeels put their entire musical arsenal into practice. "Dreamland" is among my favorites: driving in its pace and very close to the Toto aesthetic. A series of strong tracks follows: "You Can't Let It Go" is another pleasant hallmark of the band, and "Run Away" is perfectly balanced between its verses and refrain. Closing the album is the instrumental "The Wait", a smooth little gem with unexpected reminiscences of King Crimson!
This is an uplifting record that can keep you company during a busy day or a long car journey. These are those moments when you recharge and think that, in the end, life is beautiful; it takes so little. MS
