La terra del sol levante è notoriamente riconosciuta per l’alta qualità tecnica dei musicisti, soprattutto nell’ambito del Progressive Rock. Tuttavia, spesso faticano a comporre musica di grande impatto, eccezion fatta per alcuni casi noti. Sono anche grandi ascoltatori e cultori del buon sound, e non a caso molte band mondiali vanno in Giappone per registrare, soprattutto dal vivo.
Personalmente, apprezzo molto il Prog di band come Kenso, Outer Limits, Ars Nova, Bi Kyo Ran, Gerard, KBB e molte altre, perché oltre a possedere grande tecnica strumentale, pongono attenzione alla parte melodica della composizione, fondamentale per lasciare un’impronta duratura nella memoria.
In questo filone possono essere menzionati gli attuali Neo Atlantis, gruppo fondato nel 2016 dal compositore e batterista Hiromitsu "Jeff" Kaneko. L’artista priorizza la sinfonizzazione del Rock e la grandiosità degli arrangiamenti orchestrali. Con lui suonano Kazunari "Leslie" Okumura (chitarra), Masanori Hamada (basso), Ayako Asano (sintetizzatore), Makoto Shirakawa (tastiere), e l’ospite speciale Megumi Yamauchi (pianoforte).
Nel 2023 rilasciano il primo album omonimo, che cattura l'attenzione dell'etichetta brasiliana Masque Records. Quest’ultima dona nuova veste all’artwork con Bernard Andrea (bernard-design.com.br) e lo distribuisce in tutto il mondo in maniera meritevole.
Malgrado “Neo Atlantis” sia un disco strumentale privo di testo, ha un concept solido che affronta la sopravvivenza e la perdita dell'umanità. L’introduzione racconta: “In un lontano futuro (anno 300X), dopo guerre nucleari, distruzione ambientale e manipolazione genetica fallita, l'umanità è sull'orlo dell'estinzione. Con scarsità di cibo e acqua, emerge una voce: la leggendaria Atlantide è emersa dai mari. I giovani credono che ci possa essere tecnologia e conoscenza capace di salvare la Terra, e si imbarcano su una grande nave chiamata Neo Atlantis alla ricerca di questa ultima speranza.”
Subito tastiere in evidenza e un giro di basso protagonista supportano il refrain del brano “Sailing Ship Across The Sea”, che ci racconta storia e richiama i Camel e i Genesis. Il brano è molto orecchiabile e ricco di cambi d’umore in crescendo, formula sempre valida per conquistare l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore. Buona anche la parte della chitarra elettrica, che si esibisce in gradevoli assolo di matrice Neo Prog.
Vigorosa la partenza di “Empty Heated Battle”, che racconta: “La ciurma sbarca su un'isola artificiale che un tempo ospitava strutture di ricerca genetica. I sopravvissuti lì erano stati modificati per avere minore bisogno di cibo, ma erano diventati mutati e aggressivi a causa delle radiazioni.” Durante l’ascolto, alti e bassi umorali si alternano come se fossimo in preda alle onde del mare, merito sostanziale delle tastiere.
“Pride Of Warriors” è elettrica e narra: “La ciurma scopre un castello circondato da mura, un tempo roccaforte di una nazione contro il governo mondiale.” Il brano è caratterizzato da tastiere e ritmica sostenuta.
Nell’esplorazione di una città distrutta, l’equipaggio scopre una registrazione che svela l’invasione di un governo mondiale intento a sperimentazioni di DNA. “Enemy Attack On The Homeland” è una storia di crudeltà. Qui le atmosfere si fanno complesse, con un malinconico e drammatico motivo che regge la composizione.
Ma ecco sopraggiungere un'isola bella e rilassante, che però cela una strana grotta piena di mostri ultraterreni. “Strange Island” è un ottimo esempio di Neo Prog con melodia orecchiabile.
Il Triangolo delle Bermude, un tempo solo nell'Atlantico, ora esiste in tutto il mondo a causa di disastri artificiali. “Forgotten Forest” è la perfetta colonna sonora per l’ultima tappa del viaggio.
Nella nave dei Neo Atlantis si affronta un viaggio fantastico fatto di ottima musica ben congeniata. La Masque Records ha fatto bene a riproporla anche a noi, scoprendo una piccola perla sonora altrimenti ignorata. Voi siete pronti a salpare? MS

The land of the rising sun is renowned for the high technical quality of its musicians, especially in the realm of Progressive Rock. However, they often struggle to compose music with a significant impact, with a few notable exceptions. They are also great listeners and connoisseurs of good sound, and it's no coincidence that many international bands come to Japan to record, especially live.
Personally, I appreciate the Prog of bands like Kenso, Outer Limits, Ars Nova, Bi Kyo Ran, Gerard, KBB, and many others, because in addition to possessing great instrumental technique, they pay attention to the melodic part of the composition, which is essential for leaving a lasting impression.
In this vein, we can mention the current Neo Atlantis, a group founded in 2016 by composer and drummer Hiromitsu "Jeff" Kaneko. The artist prioritizes the symphonic aspect of Rock and the grandeur of orchestral arrangements. Alongside him are Kazunari "Leslie" Okumura (guitar), Masanori Hamada (bass), Ayako Asano (synthesizer), Makoto Shirakawa (keyboards), and special guest Megumi Yamauchi (piano).
In 2023, they released their first album, which caught the attention of the Brazilian label Masque Records. The label gave the artwork a new look with Bernard Andrea (bernard-design.com.br) and distributed it worldwide in a deserving manner.
Although "Neo Atlantis" is an instrumental album without lyrics, it has a solid concept that explores humanity's survival and loss. The introduction tells us: "In a distant future (year 300X), after nuclear wars, environmental destruction, and failed genetic manipulation, humanity is on the brink of extinction. With food and water scarcity, a voice emerges: the legendary Atlantis has risen from the seas. Young people believe there may be technology and knowledge capable of saving the Earth, and they set sail on a great ship called Neo Atlantis in search of this last hope."
The keyboards and bassline immediately take center stage in the song "Sailing Ship Across The Sea", which tells us a story and recalls the likes of Camel and Genesis. The song is very catchy and rich in mood changes, a formula that always works to capture the listener's attention. The electric guitar part is also noteworthy, with pleasant Neo Prog-inspired solos.
The song "Empty Heated Battle" starts vigorously, telling the story of the crew landing on an artificial island that once housed genetic research facilities. The survivors had been modified to need less food, but had become mutated and aggressive due to radiation. During the listening experience, the moods shift like the waves of the sea, thanks to the keyboards.
"Pride Of Warriors" is electric and tells the story of the crew discovering a castle surrounded by walls, once a stronghold of a nation against the world government. The song features prominent keyboards and a sustained rhythm.
In the exploration of a destroyed city, the crew discovers a recording that reveals the invasion of a world government intent on DNA experimentation. "Enemy Attack On The Homeland" is a story of cruelty, with complex atmospheres and a melancholic and dramatic motif that holds the composition together.
But then, a beautiful and relaxing island appears, hiding a strange cave full of otherworldly monsters. "Strange Island" is an excellent example of Neo Prog with a catchy melody.
The Bermuda Triangle, once only in the Atlantic, now exists worldwide due to artificial disasters. "Forgotten Forest" is the perfect soundtrack for the final leg of the journey.
On the Neo Atlantis ship, we embark on a fantastic journey of excellent music, well-crafted and deserving of attention. Masque Records did well to re-propose it to us, uncovering a small sonic pearl that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Are you ready to set sail? MS
