Ho scoperto le doti del talentuoso chitarrista Paolo Sanna nel 2023, grazie all’ascolto dell’EP “Novem Reges”.
Solitamente, in termini di gradimento e divulgazione, la musica strumentale riscontra maggiori difficoltà rispetto a quella cantata. Il motivo è presto detto: una melodia, per quanto interessante e gradevole, è più difficile da memorizzare rispetto a un testo. Tuttavia, questo concetto non vale per tutte le fette di pubblico; esiste infatti una nicchia che dalla musica pretende qualcosa in più: passaggi tecnici, controtempi e virtuosismi.
Paolo Sanna è un chitarrista che riesce a bilanciare ottime melodie e passaggi tecnici senza soffocare l’ascolto. Ne ho avuto conferma con il nuovo lavoro “Mind Castle”, in uscita il 20 gennaio 2026.
L’artista, nato a Bassano del Grappa il 12 novembre 1991, inizia ad appassionarsi alla chitarra a 15 anni, suonando come autodidatta in band locali. In seguito intraprende studi accademici presso il conservatorio “Cesare Pollini” di Padova, dove consegue la laurea triennale in Musica Elettronica sotto la guida del professor Matteo Costa. Grazie al progetto Erasmus presso l’Accademia Musicale di Cracovia, entra in una band multiculturale esibendosi nei club polacchi. Consegue inoltre i diplomi di 1°, 2° e 3° livello presso l’Accademia Doopy, ottenendo l'abilitazione all'insegnamento. Dopo aver composto la musica per il cortometraggio indipendente Alpha e Omega di Nicola Pegg, debutta discograficamente nel 2016 con il progetto Inedia e l’album Aritmia/Wasteland. Questa carriera, ricca di esperienze diverse, lo ha condotto a comporre musica che in molti passaggi sfiora il Progressive Metal.
Il disco vanta una copertina affascinante che introduce l’ascoltatore nel mondo immaginifico di Sanna: un castello costruito all'interno del cranio di un busto di pietra, a simboleggiare l'architettura del pensiero.
I sette brani di Mind Castle si aprono con "Ascension", una composizione in crescendo dalle atmosfere velatamente oscure e possenti. La musica evoca scenari cinematografici, tra attese e ripartenze scandite da riff taglienti. La potenza trova conferma in "Get Out", una fuga in cui la chitarra si cimenta in scale interessanti per poi adagiarsi su fraseggi melodici; questo alternarsi di soluzioni mantiene alta l’attenzione.
"Eat More" ruggisce con forza, scurendo ulteriormente i toni in un’immersione nel Progressive Metal più articolato. Segue "Ghost Whisper", dove i "fantasmi" sembrano palesarsi in tutta la loro impalpabile essenza. Il brano trasmette sensazioni altalenanti tra richiami al Metal nordico e momenti più distesi, impreziositi da ottimi giri di basso. È, a mio avviso, uno dei pezzi migliori del lotto.
Con "Baroque Dance" si cambia registro: su un ritmo Funk, Sanna scivola sulla tastiera riscoprendo sonorità a cavallo tra la fine degli anni '70 e i primi '80. Sembra quasi una jam session in cui l’artista mette a nudo la propria cultura musicale. "Industrial Spike" mostra invece un carattere deciso e una consapevolezza dei propri mezzi capace di ammaliare chi ascolta. Chiude il disco l'oscura "å", un brano dal lento ritmo Doom arricchito da eccellenti tappeti di tastiera.
Sanna dimostra di saper condurre l’ascoltatore in questo viaggio facendogli da "Cicerone" con classe, senza mai strafare e disseminando qua e là chicche sonore. Consiglio vivamente l’ascolto di Mind Castle: contiene passaggi che rimangono impressi nella memoria, un pregio raro e prezioso per un album interamente strumentale. MS

I first discovered the skills of talented guitarist Paolo Sanna in 2023, after listening to his EP Novem Reges.
Typically, in terms of popularity and mainstream reach, instrumental music faces greater challenges compared to vocal music. The reason is simple: a melody, however interesting and pleasant, is harder to memorize than lyrics. However, this does not apply to all audiences; there is a niche that demands something more from music: technical passages, odd time signatures, and virtuosity.
Paolo Sanna is a guitarist who manages to balance excellent melodies with technical passages without overwhelming the listener. I found confirmation of this in his new work Mind Castle, set for release on January 20, 2026.
Born in Bassano del Grappa on November 12, 1991, the artist first fell in love with the guitar at the age of 15, playing as a self-taught musician in local bands. He later pursued academic studies at the “Cesare Pollini” Conservatory in Padua, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Music under the guidance of Professor Matteo Costa. Thanks to an Erasmus project at the Academy of Music in Kraków, he joined a multicultural band, performing in Polish clubs. He also holds 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-level diplomas from the Doopy Academy, including teaching certification. After composing the music for the independent short film Alpha e Omega by Nicola Pegg, he made his recording debut in 2016 with the project Inedia and the album Aritmia/Wasteland. This career, rich in diverse experiences, has led him to compose music that frequently borders on Progressive Metal.
The album boasts a fascinating cover that introduces the listener to Sanna's imaginative world: a castle built inside the skull of a stone bust, symbolizing the "architecture of thought."
The seven tracks of Mind Castle open with "Ascension", a composition that builds in intensity with vaguely dark and powerful atmospheres. The music evokes cinematic scenarios, characterized by pauses and restarts driven by sharp riffs. This power is confirmed in "Get Out", a fast-paced track where the guitar ventures into interesting scales before settling into melodic phrasing; this alternating approach keeps the listener's attention high.
"Eat More" roars with strength, further darkening the tones in an immersion into more complex Progressive Metal. This is followed by "Ghost Whisper", where "ghosts" seem to manifest in all their impalpable essence. The track conveys fluctuating sensations between nods to Nordic Metal and more relaxed moments embellished by excellent bass lines. In my opinion, it is one of the best tracks of the lot.
With "Baroque Dance", the record shifts gears: over a Funk rhythm, Sanna glides across the fretboard, rediscovering sounds from the late '70s and early '80s. It feels almost like a jam session where the artist lays bare his musical background. "Industrial Spike", on the other hand, shows a strong character and a self-awareness capable of captivating the listener. The album closes with the dark "å", a track with a slow Doom pace enriched by excellent keyboard layers.
Sanna proves he can lead the listener through this journey, acting as a "Cicerone" (guide) with class, never overdoing it while scattering sonic gems throughout. I highly recommend listening to Mind Castle: it contains passages that truly stick in the mind—a rare and precious quality for an entirely instrumental album. MS
