Non so se capiti solo a me, ma il Rock melodico ha il potere di farmi volare alto con la fantasia, estraniandomi serenamente dalle vicissitudini quotidiane. Se a tali sonorità si aggiunge il Progressive Rock, il connubio diventa micidiale. È certamente una questione di gusti, ma l’emozione resta sovrana: su questo non ci sono dubbi.
Fondere AOR, Prog e cantautorato è una sfida ambiziosa. Le melodie devono essere calibrate per non scivolare nella banalità, mentre la tecnica strumentale resta un requisito fondamentale, doti che i torinesi Arca Project dimostrano chiaramente di possedere.
Fondato come quintetto dai veterani Alex Jorio (batteria e percussioni, ex-Elektradrive) e Gregorio Verdun (basso e tastiere), il gruppo si avvale oggi delle voci di Sergio Toya e Jacopo Siccardi, insieme alla chitarra di Carlo Maccaferri.
L’esordio omonimo risale al 2018 e fu accolto con entusiasmo dalla critica, che ne lodò sia il concept sia l'impianto musicale, spesso ispirato al Prog "genesiano" degli anni '80 o a band come gli Asia. Dopo otto anni, il discorso riprende con “XO2S”, un lavoro caratterizzato da una scrittura densa e stratificata, dove la metafora del viaggio, inteso come fuga o ricerca di una dimensione "altra", si fa fulcro della narrazione.
Il titolo stesso suggerisce una formula chimica o tecnologica. I brani esplorano il rapporto tra l’individuo e la modernità, toccando temi quali l’isolamento e la difficoltà comunicativa in un mondo iper-connesso.
Nonostante l'album superi abbondantemente i settanta minuti, non risulta affatto pesante: la struttura è bilanciata, alternando passaggi energici a momenti riflessivi e d'autore.
La voce di Sergio Toya non si limita a interpretare, ma declama testi che rifuggono la classica struttura "strofa-ritornello". La scrittura è ricercata, ricca di immagini evocative, pur mantenendo la chiarezza comunicativa tipica dell'AOR ed evitando l'eccessivo ermetismo di certi rami del Prog classico.
Il singolo d’apertura, “Ouagadougou”, stupisce per freschezza, richiamando certe atmosfere dei New Trolls anni ’80. L'ottima produzione esalta l'insieme, incluso lo splendido assolo di chitarra. In questo caso, preferisco non procedere con una disamina traccia per traccia perchè credo che la sorpresa debba essere parte integrante dell'esperienza dell'ascoltatore. L’importante è sapere che in questo lungo viaggio ci attendono melodie e coralità immediate, facili da memorizzare.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but Melodic Rock has the power to let my imagination soar, peacefully drifting away from the daily grind. When you add Progressive Rock to the mix, the combination is formidable. While it’s ultimately a matter of taste, emotion remains king—there is no doubt about that.
Blending AOR, Prog, and singer-songwriter sensibilities is an ambitious challenge. Melodies must be carefully crafted to avoid clichés, while instrumental technique remains a fundamental requirement—qualities that Turin’s own Arca Progject clearly possess.
Founded as a quintet by veterans Alex Jorio (drums and percussion, ex-Elektradrive) and Gregorio Verdun (bass and keyboards), the band now features the vocals of Sergio Toya and Jacopo Siccardi, alongside Carlo Maccaferri on guitar.
Their self-titled debut dates back to 2018 and was met with critical acclaim for both its concept and musical structure, often drawing inspiration from 80s-era Genesis-style Prog or bands like Asia. Eight years later, the journey continues with "XO2S", a work characterized by dense, layered songwriting where the metaphor of travel—as an escape or a search for another dimension—becomes the heart of the narrative.
The title itself suggests a chemical or technological formula. The tracks explore the relationship between the individual and modernity, touching on themes such as isolation and the difficulty of communicating in a hyper-connected world. Despite the album clocking in at well over seventy minutes, it never feels like a slog; the structure is well-balanced, alternating energetic passages with more reflective, songwriter-driven moments.
Sergio Toya’s vocals do more than just interpret; they declaim lyrics that often shun the classic "verse-chorus" structure. The writing is sophisticated and rich with evocative imagery, yet it retains the communicative clarity typical of AOR, avoiding the excessive crypticness found in certain branches of classic Prog.
The opening single, "Ouagadougou", is surprisingly fresh, recalling the 1980s atmosphere of New Trolls. The excellent production enhances the overall sound, including a splendid guitar solo. In this instance, I prefer not to provide a track-by-track breakdown; I believe the element of surprise should be an integral part of the listener's experience. What matters is knowing that throughout this long journey, immediate melodies and choruses await, easy to memorize and sing along to.
A special mention goes to the guest saxophone performance by Claudio "Mago" Merlino. As for the rest… enjoy the listen! MS
