Si sente spesso dire che la musica non abbia più nulla da comunicare, che le note siano soltanto sette e che ogni territorio sia già stato esplorato. In realtà, sono i silenzi, gli innesti e la capacità di sostenere una nota a smentire questa tesi. Personalmente, non smetto mai di stupirmi nell’ascoltare realtà nuove dalle idee interessanti; basta saper cercare o affidarsi a un buon recensore che condivida i nostri gusti e sappia fare questa cernita per noi.
Dopo aver apprezzato molto nel 2023 il debutto “Legroom”, ritrovare oggi i Legs On Wheels con "Gobble" è come entrare in un caleidoscopio psichedelico dove ogni movimento trasforma forme e colori. Il quintetto di Manchester formato nel 2017 da Danny Murgatroyd (voce, chitarra), Alex Crumbie (chitarra, voce, percussioni), George Roberts (tastiere, voce), Ged Hawksworth (batteria) e Dean Stoloff (basso), conferma una scrittura colta e imprevedibile.
Il songwriting attinge al grande Prog britannico degli anni '60 e '70 (Genesis, King Crimson, Gong, Jethro Tull), ma la band ne scardina le convenzioni giocando con World Music, Jazz, Pop Rock, Soul, Punk e Funk. È un equilibrio tra passato e presente metabolizzato con personalità, sulla scia di quanto fatto da formazioni moderne come Echolyn o Beardfish.
“Gobble” si sviluppa in 45 minuti divisi in 8 tracce. L’album segue una progressione ideale: brani brevi e ritmati nella prima parte, composizioni lunghe e stratificate nella seconda. I testi sono surreali, intrisi di umorismo nero e spesso grotteschi. In linea con il titolo (che richiama sia il verso del tacchino che l’atto di divorare avidamente), il disco esplora i temi del consumo, della voracità e della natura animale dell’uomo.
L'apertura è affidata a "Oysters On The Half Shell", caratterizzata da una voce che ricorda David Byrne e da una chitarra nervosa in stile Robert Fripp. Il ritornello, melodico e gradevole, fa da contrappunto a un testo che descrive banchetti bizzarri e dinamiche preda-predatore.
Segue "A.P.E.S.", che si inoltra in meandri vicini ai Gentle Giant per poi virare verso il Psych-Pop e il Glam Rock, con un ammiccamento ai Beatles, un assolo di chitarra graffiante e una riflessione sull'evoluzione umana.
Se "Winner Winner" si muove su territori Funky e introspettivi, la vera sorpresa è "Peekaboo", un pezzo Pop orecchiabile con echi del Peter Gabriel solista. L’humor inglese emerge prepotentemente in "Waiting For His Drowning" che, a dispetto del titolo cupo, affronta il tema dell’ineluttabilità con distacco teatrale e avanguardistico.
Si prosegue con "Centipede", traccia in pieno stile Echolyn con ottimi intrecci corali e un ritmo sincopato che mima il movimento di un millepiedi. L’anima più sperimentale esplode invece in "Dinnertime For Rat", che evolve dal Noise Rock a un Rock serratissimo. Il culmine dell’opera arriva con gli undici minuti di "Masteroid", una mini-epopea fantascientifica che fonde termini tecnici e invenzioni verbali per evocare immagini di decadenza spaziale.
Una menzione speciale va alla copertina: bizzarra e quasi incomprensibile, un mix visivo tra un tacchino e un pesce che cattura perfettamente lo spirito di "caos controllato" della band. In definitiva, “Gobble” è un disco sorprendente. La musica ha ancora molto da dire... anche oggi. Ricordatelo. MS

We often hear it said that music has nothing left to communicate, that there are only seven notes and every territory has already been explored. In reality, it is the silences, the grafts, and the ability to sustain a single note that debunk this theory. Personally, I never cease to be amazed when listening to new acts with interesting ideas; you just need to know where to look or trust a good reviewer who shares your musical taste and does the sifting for you.
After greatly enjoying their 2023 debut Legroom, finding Legs On Wheels again today with "Gobble" is like entering a psychedelic kaleidoscope where every movement transforms shapes and colors. The Manchester quintet—formed in 2017 by Danny Murgatroyd (vocals, guitar), Alex Crumbie (guitar, vocals, percussion), George Roberts (keyboards, vocals), Ged Hawksworth (drums), and Dean Stoloff (bass)—confirms a sophisticated and unpredictable songwriting style.
Their songwriting draws from the great British Prog of the '60s and '70s (Genesis, King Crimson, Gong, Jethro Tull), yet the band dismantles conventions by playing with World Music, Jazz, Pop Rock, Soul, Punk, and Funk. It is a balance between past and present, metabolized with a personal touch, much like modern outfits such as Echolyn or Beardfish.
“Gobble” unfolds over 45 minutes across 8 tracks. The album follows an ideal progression: short, rhythmic songs in the first half, leading to longer, more layered compositions in the second. The lyrics are surreal, steeped in black humor, and often grotesque. In line with the title (referencing both the sound of a turkey and the act of devouring greedily), the record explores themes of consumption, voracity, and the animal nature of man.
The opening is entrusted to "Oysters On The Half Shell", featuring vocals reminiscent of David Byrne and nervous, Robert Fripp-style guitar work. The melodic and pleasant chorus acts as a counterpoint to lyrics describing bizarre banquets and predator-prey dynamics. This is followed by "A.P.E.S.", which ventures into territory close to Gentle Giant before veering toward Psych-Pop and Glam Rock, complete with a wink to the Beatles, a biting guitar solo, and a reflection on human evolution.
While "Winner Winner" moves through Funky and introspective lands, the real surprise is "Peekaboo": a catchy Pop track with echoes of solo Peter Gabriel. British humor emerges strongly in "Waiting For His Drowning" which, despite the grim title, tackles the theme of inevitability with a theatrical and avant-garde detachment.
The journey continues with "Centipede", a track in full Echolyn style with excellent choral arrangements and a syncopated rhythm that mimics the movement of a centipede. The band's more experimental soul explodes in "Dinnertime For Rat", which evolves from Noise Rock into a tightly wound Rock piece. The work reaches its climax with the eleven minutes of "Masteroid", a sci-fi mini-epic that blends technical terms and pure verbal inventions to evoke images of cosmic decay.
A special mention goes to the cover art: bizarre and almost incomprehensible—a visual mix of a turkey and a fish—it perfectly captures the "controlled chaos" spirit of the band. Ultimately, Gobble is a surprising record. Music still has a lot to say... even today. Remember that. MS
