Queste uscite discografiche hanno il potere di catapultarmi indietro nel tempo, fino agli anni ’80, quando il vinile dominava ogni negozio di musica, specialmente in ambito Heavy Metal. Parlo dello "split", quel formato che raccoglie brani inediti di più band in un unico supporto. Sebbene storicamente non abbiano sempre ottenuto il successo commerciale sperato, queste edizioni conservano un fascino di nicchia irresistibile, trasformando ogni copia in un prezioso cimelio per fan e collezionisti.
La Black Widow Records è celebre per la qualità delle sue produzioni, con un focus particolare sul Dark Doom e il Metal Prog dalle tinte oscure. Nella loro scuderia spiccano nomi di rilievo del panorama underground, tra cui gli Expiatoria e Il Segno Del Comando (guidati dal bassista Diego Banchero). In questo lavoro, le due formazioni uniscono le forze per omaggiare la serie TV "Voci Notturne", opera del 1995 nata dal genio di Pupi Avati. Entrambi i gruppi riescono a evocare quelle atmosfere inquietanti che appartengono al DNA del nostro cinema di genere, vanto della cultura horror italiana.
Lo split si articola in sette tracce: tre firmate dagli Expiatoria e quattro da Il Segno Del Comando. L'edizione in vinile vanta una tiratura iniziale di cento copie.
Nonostante le band condividano il chitarrista Roberto Lucato, le identità restano ben distinte. Gli Expiatoria — con una line-up completata da AngeleX (voce), Massimo Malachina (chitarra), GB Malachina (basso) ed Enrico Meloni (batteria) — aprono le danze con "Emily". Il brano è introdotto dal narrato originale del telefilm e procede con un incedere gravoso, dove il Doom trasuda dalle note come un liquido nero. La prova vocale di AngeleX è intensa e sentita, quasi recitata, mentre i riff pesanti si sposano con una sezione ritmica dinamica e l'immancabile assolo di chitarra di stampo ottantiano.
Con "Sublicius", la band conferma un ottimo stato di forma, accostandosi ai maestri nordici Candlemass per solennità e attitudine. Il brano sfiora toni liturgici, prima di lasciare spazio a "La Canzone Di Lady Valover", episodio più riflessivo che concede una tregua attraverso arpeggi suggestivi e un cantato meno aggressivo, culminando in un eccellente finale strumentale.
Il Segno Del Comando entra in scena con "Le Due Vie", spostando il baricentro verso un Metal Prog dalle forti influenze Dark. La formazione attuale vede, oltre a Lucato e Banchero, Riccardo Morello alla voce, Davide Bruzzi (chitarra e tastiere), Beppi Menozzi (tastiere) e Paolo Serboli (batteria). La traccia è caratterizzata da una parte centrale orecchiabile, arricchita da strutture ricercate e melodie esaltate dai sintetizzatori.
In "Il Crittogramma" il volume si alza, dimostrando quanto la band si trovi a proprio agio con queste tematiche. Il cantato, quasi vicino alla New Wave degli anni ’80, apre scenari narrativi suggestivi e ricchi di dettagli. Segue il momento più intimo del lotto, "Litania Per Emily E Giacomo", dove le chitarre dialogano magistralmente tra elettrico e acustico. La chiusura è affidata alla strumentale "Egregoro", un pezzo epico che fonde il Metal Prog con sfumature Neo Prog, siglando il disco in grande stile.
Ancora una volta, la Black Widow Records sa come colpire l'animo degli ascoltatori più oscuri. Nota di merito per l'ottimo lavoro grafico di Enrico Meloni e per il booking curato da Alex Reale. MS

These record releases have the power to catapult me back in time to the 1980s, when vinyl dominated every record store, especially within the Heavy Metal scene. I am speaking of the "split"—a format that gathers unreleased tracks from multiple bands onto a single record. Although historically these operations haven't always achieved the commercial success they deserved, these editions retain an irresistible niche appeal, turning every copy into a precious relic for fans and collectors.
Black Widow Records is renowned for the quality of its productions, with a specific focus on Dark Doom and Metal Prog with obscure overtones. Their roster features prominent names of the underground scene, including Expiatoria and Il Segno Del Comando (led by bassist Diego Banchero). In this work, the two groups join forces to pay tribute to the TV series "Voci Notturne," a 1995 masterpiece born from the genius of Pupi Avati. Both bands successfully evoke those unsettling atmospheres that belong to the DNA of Italian genre cinema—a true point of pride for our horror culture.
The split consists of seven tracks: three by Expiatoria and four by Il Segno Del Comando. The vinyl edition boasts an initial pressing of one hundred copies.
Despite sharing guitarist Roberto Lucato, the identities of the two bands remain distinct. Expiatoria—with a line-up completed by AngeleX (vocals), Massimo Malachina (guitar), GB Malachina (bass), and Enrico Meloni (drums)—opens the set with "Emily." The track is introduced by the original narration from the TV show and proceeds with a heavy pace, where Doom oozes from the notes like black liquid. AngeleX’s vocal performance is intense and heartfelt, almost recited, while the heavy, sustained riffs blend perfectly with a dynamic rhythmic section and the inevitable 80s-style guitar solo.
With "Sublicius," the band confirms its excellent form, approaching the solemnity and attitude of Nordic masters Candlemass. The track borders on the liturgical before making way for "La Canzone Di Lady Valover," a more reflective episode that offers a brief respite through suggestive arpeggios and less aggressive vocals, culminating in an excellent instrumental finale.
Il Segno Del Comando enters the scene with "Le Due Vie," shifting the focus toward Metal Prog with strong Dark influences. The current line-up includes, alongside Lucato and Banchero, Riccardo Morello on vocals, Davide Bruzzi (guitar and keyboards), Beppi Menozzi (keyboards), and Paolo Serboli (drums). The track features a catchy central section, enriched by sophisticated structures and melodies enhanced by synthesizers.
In "Il Crittogramma," the volume and the stakes are raised, proving that Il Segno Del Comando is perfectly at home with these themes. The vocals, reminiscent of 80s New Wave, open up highly suggestive and detailed narrative scenarios. This is followed by the most intimate moment of the lot, "Litania Per Emily E Giacomo," where the guitars masterfully dialogue between electric and acoustic sounds. The closing is entrusted to the instrumental "Egregoro," an epic piece that fuses Metal Prog with Neo Prog nuances, sealing the album in grand style.
Once again, Black Widow Records knows exactly how to strike a chord with the darkest listeners. A special mention goes to Enrico Meloni for the beautiful graphic work and to Alex Reale for handling the booking. MS
