Ne è passata di acqua sotto i ponti da quel 2005, quando “Sol29” ha stupito tutti i fans dei Porcupine Tree. Il chitarrista, tastierista, compositore e cantante Giancarlo Erra ha saputo miscelare con parsimonia la Psichedelia con il sound minimal del Post Rock e negli anni rilascia sei album in studio con svariati singoli ed ep. L’ultimo lavoro risale all’anno 2018 (senza considerare l’album di transizione solista del 2021) e porta il titolo di “Allow Yourself”. Con questo prodigarsi, Erra riscuote l’attenzione di moltissimo pubblico e della critica, i quali costantemente tessono lodi per ogni singolo disco. C’è chi li accosta ai Sigur Rós, chi a Brian Eno, tuttavia l’impronta di Steven Wilson è maggiormente marcata, anche quella del progetto parallelo No Man con Tim Bowness, che compare guarda caso alla voce.
Anche la copertina dell’album realizzata dallo stesso Giancarlo Erra è minimale per lasciare interamente spazio al messaggio che si vuole passare, quello di un bambino che cammina con le mani in tasca e lo sguardo rivolto al basso e sotto il corrispettivo adulto avente lo stesso atteggiamento. Un percorso di vita in cui si denota il passaggio del tempo rilasciante le stesse problematiche da affrontare, e noi ne siamo “al centro”.
Da sottolineare il ritorno alle strumentazioni fisiche come ad esempio quello della batteria che rende il tutto più caldo e sincero. “Nothing We Gave” denota da subito l’approccio primordiale dello stile Nosound, diretto, etereo e inconfondibile. Il velo malinconico è il punto di forza della musica prossima alle atmosfere delle band suddette, e aggiungo i Pink Floyd.
Il suono di un piano morigeratamente ponderato introduce la title track “To The Core”, traccia che risplende la creatività di Erra in un crescendo agnostico alla ricerca di passaggi strumentali inutilmente astrusi. E’ quindi la chitarra elettrica nel finale a rilasciare un dialogo con l’anima intimamente mirato a uno struggente epilogo.
Il singolo dell’ep porta il titolo di “Worn-Out Parts”, qui l’approccio vocale si accosta a quello di Tom Yorke nei Radiohead, tutto diventa onirico grazie anche agli effetti eco delle voci. Questi brani hanno tutti una breve durata per mirare direttamente allo scopo senza perdersi in inutili fraseggi che potrebbero distogliere l’ascoltatore dal messaggio che Erra e soci vogliono passare. Con lui suonano Orazio Fabbri (basso), Paolo Vigliarolo (chitarre), Marco Berni (tastiere), e Daniele Michelacci (batteria). Ospite anche Louise Pigott ai cori.
Ancor più malinconica la piano e voce “Interrupt”, una perla sonora su cui socchiudere gli occhi e lasciarsi trasportare in una sorta di ipnotica nenia.
“Closure” suggella questo ep con classe, dove la cura per i particolari mette ancor più in luce l’essenzialità di questa musica.
Ascoltare i Nosound è sempre una esperienza gradevole, un passaggio fuori dei canoni strutturali a cui la musica moderna ci ha abituati, e se in più vi dico che il 100% del ricavato sarà devoluto all'appello umanitario del DEC Ucraina, allora un motivo in più per acquistare questo piccolo gioiello sonoro. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since 2005, when "Sol29" amazed all Porcupine Tree fans. The guitarist, keyboardist, composer, and singer Giancarlo Erra has known how to blend Psychedelia with the minimal sound of Post Rock with parsimony, and over the years, he releases six studio albums with various singles and EPs. The last work dates back to 2018 (not considering the 2021 solo transition album) and is titled "Allow Yourself". With this work, Erra gains the attention of a lot of audience and critics, who constantly praise every single disc. Some compare them to Sigur Rós, others to Brian Eno, however, the imprint of Steven Wilson is more marked, as well as that of the parallel project No Man with Tim Bowness, who appears as a guest vocalist.
The album cover, also realized by Giancarlo Erra, is minimal to leave entirely space to the message that wants to be passed, that of a child walking with hands in pockets and gaze directed downwards and under the corresponding adult having the same attitude. A life path where the passage of time denotes the same problems to face, and we are "at the core".
It's worth noting the return to physical instrumentation, such as drums, which makes everything warmer and sincere. "Nothing We Gave" immediately denotes the primordial approach of the Nosound style, direct, ethereal, and unmistakable. The melancholic veil is the strong point of the music, close to the atmospheres of the aforementioned bands, and I add Pink Floyd.
The sound of a moderately pondered piano introduces the title track "To The Core", a track that shines with Erra's creativity in an agnostic crescendo in search of instrumental passages that are not unnecessarily abstruse. It's the electric guitar in the finale that releases a dialogue with the soul, intimately aimed at a poignant epilogue.
The single of the EP bears the title "Worn-Out Parts", where the vocal approach is similar to that of Tom Yorke in Radiohead, everything becomes dreamy thanks also to the echo effects of the voices. These tracks all have a short duration to aim directly at the purpose without getting lost in useless phrasing that could distract the listener from the message that Erra and co. want to pass. With him play Orazio Fabbri (bass), Paolo Vigliarolo (guitars), Marco Berni (keyboards), and Daniele Michelacci (drums). Guest vocalist is also Louise Pigott.
Even more melancholic is the piano and voice "Interrupt", a sound pearl on which to close your eyes and let yourself be carried away in a sort of hypnotic lament.
"Closure" seals this EP with class, where the care for details highlights even more the essentiality of this music.
Listening to Nosound is always a pleasant experience, a passage outside the structural canons to which modern music has accustomed us, and if I tell you that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the DEC Ukraine humanitarian appeal, then there's one more reason to buy this small sonic jewel. MS
