E’ bello perdersi ogni tanto in quel mondo ricco di sonorità sia vintage che moderne denominato generalmente Art Rock.
Se amate il vecchio Prog sinfonico, ma anche le varianti più moderne dettate da band come The Flower Kings o Transatlantic, con i finlandesi Paradox Of Progress andate a nozze!
“Crossing The Distance” è l'album di debutto del duo originario di Kokkola che si è affacciato sulla scena Progressive internazionale nel 2025 composto dal duo Ari Vilmunen (synth), e Juha Koiste (chitarre, basso, programmazioni), con la partecipazione di  Jarkko Lahti al piano.
L'album è una sfida alla soglia dell'attenzione moderna, dura circa 52 minuti ma è composto da soli 3 brani. È un lavoro interamente strumentale, che punta tutto su atmosfere epiche e passaggi tecnici complessi
La critica ha accostato il loro sound a giganti come Genesis e Yes per l'approccio tecnico e l'uso delle chitarre e ai Pink Floyd per certi tappeti atmosferici.
Nonostante siano solo in due, il suono risulta pieno e "orchestrale", posizionandoli come una delle realtà più interessanti emerse dalla Finlandia negli ultimi tempi per quanto riguarda il settore Symphonic Prog.
“Wayfarer On A Trail Of Stars” della durata di circa dodici minuti abbondanti,  è un manifesto di Prog Sinfonico, con forti richiami allo stile dei Pendragon e degli UK. Il finale al pianoforte, suonato dall'ospite Jarkko Lahti, è uno dei momenti più alti del brano.
“Across The Aeons” con i suoi sette minuti e mezzo, è il brano più "breve" e accessibile, caratterizzato da melodie più dirette pur mantenendo l'intreccio tecnico tipico del duo.
“The Journey Intro…” è il vero piatto forte. Una suite monumentale di mezz'ora che esplora ogni sfumatura del genere, dalle cavalcate di tastiere in stile Keith Emerson (ELP) a momenti più vicini ai Dream Theater o ai Transatlantic e poi Mellotron, sprazzi di Hard Prog, aperture solari come sanno fare gli americani Spock’s Beard… E chi più ne ha più ne metta.
Certo che imbattersi oggi in un album completamente strumentale di cotanta enfasi e carico di soluzioni è quantomeno anomalo e controtendenza con il mainstream, ma gli amanti del grande Prog sono sicuro che troveranno “Crossing The Distance” un tunnel fatto di tanti passaggi gradevoli oltre che storici. Personalmente mi ha molto divertito e lo consiglio a tutti! MS

It is a pleasure to get lost every now and then in that world rich with both vintage and modern sounds generally known as Art Rock. If you love old-school Symphonic Prog, but also the more modern variations defined by bands like The Flower Kings or Transatlantic, you will feel right at home with Finland’s Paradox Of Progress!
Crossing The Distance is the debut album from this Kokkola-based duo, who first appeared on the international Progressive scene in 2025. The group consists of Ari Vilmunen (synths) and Juha Koiste (guitars, bass, programming), featuring Jarkko Lahti on piano.
The album is a challenge to the modern attention span; it lasts about 52 minutes but consists of only 3 tracks. It is an entirely instrumental work that relies heavily on epic atmospheres and complex technical passages. Critics have compared their sound to giants like Genesis and Yes for their technical approach and use of guitars, and to Pink Floyd for certain atmospheric textures. Despite being only two members, the sound is full and "orchestral," positioning them as one of the most interesting acts to emerge from Finland’s Symphonic Prog sector in recent times.
“Wayfarer On A Trail Of Stars,” clocking in at just over twelve minutes, is a Symphonic Prog manifesto with strong nods to the style of Pendragon and UK. The piano finale, performed by guest Jarkko Lahti, is one of the track's absolute highlights.
“Across The Aeons,” at seven and a half minutes, is the "shortest" and most accessible track, characterized by more direct melodies while maintaining the duo’s typical technical intricacy.
“The Journey Into…” is the true centerpiece. A monumental half-hour suite that explores every nuance of the genre—from keyboard runs in the style of Keith Emerson (ELP) to moments closer to Dream Theater or Transatlantic, plus Mellotron, flashes of Hard Prog, and bright, sun-drenched openings reminiscent of America's Spock’s Beard... and so much more.
Encountering an entirely instrumental album of such emphasis and rich arrangements today is certainly unusual and goes against the mainstream grain. However, I am sure that lovers of "Great Prog" will find Crossing The Distance to be a tunnel filled with many pleasant and historically-rooted passages. Personally, I found it very entertaining and highly recommend it to everyone! — MS
