Fin dalla metà degli anni Novanta, il musicista e pianista siciliano Fabio Anile, trapiantato a Roma, è parte integrante del collettivo Chain Tape Collective, un gruppo di musicisti fondato verso la fine degli anni ’90 da Michael Klobuchar. In questo contesto, operando in modalità autonoma e volontaria, artisti provenienti da Europa e Stati Uniti collaborano alla realizzazione di numerosi dischi a tema ambientale. Anile ha partecipato al progetto con EnoLogica e, successivamente, attraverso la Looper’s Delight Community.
Questa esperienza gli ha permesso di entrare in contatto con numerosi artisti, tra cui il chitarrista sperimentale tedesco Michael Peters, Bernhard Wagner dei Sonar, Stephan Thelen, il batterista Agostino Marangolo (Goblin) e il contrabbassista Keith Lowe. Questi ultimi figurano anche nel disco di debutto solista che andiamo ad analizzare, intitolato “Minutiae”. Al progetto partecipano inoltre ospiti del calibro di Samuel Hällkvist (chitarra), Michael Peters (chitarra), Stephan Thelen (chitarra), Bernhard Wagner (chitarra), Jon Durant (chitarra) e Fabio Trentini (basso).
La proposta musicale si muove tra Rock e Avanguardia, in un equilibrio tra lirismo melodico italiano e minimalismo americano, il tutto è sorretto da una tematica riflessiva sul tempo nelle sue molteplici dimensioni e nel suo rapporto con la forma e la pratica musicale.
L’incipit di “Compás” mette in evidenza un approccio melodico al classicismo ponderato ed essenziale, dove il crescendo sonoro rappresenta la chiave di volta della composizione. Risulta fondamentale l’apporto degli archi e del contrabbasso, che conferiscono calore al brano in un omaggio all’unità ritmica della musica flamenca. Marangolo guida l’ensemble con maestria attraverso una ritmica spezzata che affonda le radici nel Jazz-Rock praticato al fianco di artisti come Napoli Centrale, Goblin e Perigeo.
“Dance”, già presentata in una versione per percussioni intonate con il Mannheimer Schlagwerk diretto dal Maestro Dennis Kuhn, esalta lo stile percussivo di Steve Reich, accostando la composizione a quella "cellula impazzita" degli anni ’80 chiamata King Crimson.
Fabio Anile non è il classico pianista dedito al virtuosismo tecnico fine a se stesso, la sua ricerca è interamente rivolta al suono "puro", al valore del silenzio e all'emozione raccolta. La toccante “Foglie Morte” ne è la cartina di tornasole: uno splendido esempio di cura del dettaglio.
“Mysterious Counterpoint” apre con pianoforte e contrabbasso un loop sonoro incessante in cui perdersi o restare ipnotizzati. Qui, ricerca e sperimentazione sono poste interamente al servizio della mente.
Personalmente, resto ammaliato dalla bellezza nostalgica di “More Than 12” e dal suo incedere Progressive Rock, che esalta la tecnica individuale dei singoli componenti. È il momento più marcatamente Rock ed elettrico dell’ensemble, una vera gemma sonora.
“Planet Nine (Orbits)” vede la partecipazione di Trentini al basso e richiama le atmosfere degli svizzeri Sonar, con le chitarre che prendono progressivamente il sopravvento.
I dieci minuti finali sono affidati a “Shifting Trains”, un brano con cui si vola nuovamente verso orizzonti cinematografici, va sans dire.
Molto bello ed elegante l’artwork di Petulia Mattioli, capace di rendere giustizia a una musica che, con pochi tocchi, sa entrare nell’anima scavando nei ricordi e nelle immagini temporali di ognuno di noi. Un disco di questo spessore è rigenerante per il corpo e per la mente. MS

Since the mid-nineties, the Sicilian musician and pianist Fabio Anile, now based in Rome, has been an integral part of the Chain Tape Collective, a group of musicians founded toward the end of the 90s by Michael Klobuchar. Within this framework, operating autonomously and voluntarily, artists from Europe and the United States collaborate on numerous ambient-themed albums. Anile contributed to the project with EnoLogica and, subsequently, through the Looper’s Delight Community.
This experience allowed him to connect with numerous artists, including German experimental guitarist Michael Peters, Bernhard Wagner of Sonar, Stephan Thelen, drummer Agostino Marangolo (Goblin), and bassist Keith Lowe. The latter two also feature on the solo debut album we are analyzing, titled “Minutiae”. The project further includes high-caliber guests such as Samuel Hällkvist (guitar), Michael Peters (guitar), Stephan Thelen (guitar), Bernhard Wagner (guitar), Jon Durant (guitar), and Fabio Trentini (bass).
The musical offering moves between Rock and Avant-garde, balancing Italian melodic lyricism with American minimalism; the entire work is underpinned by a reflective theme on time in its multiple dimensions and its relationship with musical form and practice.
The opening of “Compás” highlights a thoughtful and essential melodic approach to classicism, where the sonic crescendo serves as the composition's cornerstone. The contribution of the strings and double bass is fundamental, lending warmth to the piece in an homage to the rhythmic unity of flamenco music. Marangolo masterfully leads the ensemble through a broken rhythm that draws its roots from the Jazz-Rock he practiced alongside artists of the caliber of Napoli Centrale, Goblin, and Perigeo.
“Dance”, previously released in a version for pitched percussion with the Mannheimer Schlagwerk conducted by Maestro Dennis Kuhn, exalts the percussive style of Steve Reich, drawing the composition close to that "erratic cell" of the 1980s known as King Crimson.
Fabio Anile is not the typical pianist seeking technical virtuosity for its own sake; his research is entirely focused on "pure" sound, the value of silence, and gathered emotion. The touching “Foglie Morte” is the litmus test of this: a splendid example of attention to detail.
“Mysterious Counterpoint” opens with piano and double bass, creating an incessant sonic loop in which to get lost or remain hypnotized. Here, research and experimentation are placed entirely at the service of the mind.
Personally, I remain captivated by the nostalgic beauty of “More Than 12” and its Progressive Rock gait, which highlights the individual technique of each member. This is the ensemble's most markedly Rock and electric moment—a true sonic gem.
“Planet Nine (Orbits)” features Trentini on bass and recalls the atmosphere of the Swiss band Sonar, with the guitars gradually taking over.
The final ten minutes are entrusted to “Shifting Trains”, a track that soars once again toward cinematic horizons, va sans dire.
The artwork by Petulia Mattioli is very beautiful and elegant, doing justice to music that, with a few touches, knows how to enter the soul by digging into the memories and temporal images of each of us. An album of this depth is rejuvenating for both body and mind. MS
