Dei
norvegesi Airbag ho avuto modo di parlarne ampiamente nel mio libro “Post Prog
Moderno” (Arcana), una band che nel tempo ha saputo fare breccia nei cuori dei
fans soprattutto dei Pink Floyd. Il modo di suonare la chitarra di Bjørn Riis è
simile a quello di David Gilmour, e questo si evidenzia durante gli assolo,
quelli sostenuti, privi di chissà quali tecnicismi, solo mirati a un suono
ampio, sostenuto e spaziale. Lo si evince perfino all’ascolto della discografia
solista del chitarrista, che poco dista da quello della band madre.
Il
genere proposto dunque è al limite della Psichedelia moderna, tutta musica per
la mente, spesso ipnotica, alienante ma ricca di melodie delicate, quelle che
ti fanno stare bene e che fanno socchiudere gli occhi durante l’ascolto.
Sin
dal primo album “Identity” del 2009, gli Airbag non si sono spostati di un
centimetro dallo stile proposto, quasi a perseverare sull’idea che la musica
quando è fatta bene non si tocca. E’ un’arma a doppio taglio, chi attende
novità stilistiche da una band comunque Prog come questa, a lungo andare
potrebbe abbandonare la nave, ma a Bjørn Riis (chitarra), Asle Tostrup (voce),
e Henrik Fossum (batteria), tutto questo sembra non interessare. Chi ama gli
Airbag probabilmente vuole soltanto questo, quelle composizioni che partono
lentamente o con un loop sonoro da mettere in testa, per poi andare in
crescendo nel finale con il classico assolo alla “Comfortably Numb” (Pink
Floyd). Si, perché questi norvegesi hanno un buon seguito, il successo li ha
comunque toccati, e perché rischiare? Sembrano voler dire: “Noi siamo questo, prendere
o lasciare.”.
Probabilmente
hanno ragione loro, e poi non vanno dimenticate queste composizioni dall’ampio
respiro che fanno battere forte il cuore.
“The
Century Of The Self” è il sesto album in studio formato da cinque canzoni di
media e lunga durata per un totale di quarantasette minuti di musica.
“Dysphoria” apre il viaggio e immediatamente stampa in testa il classico
tormentone Airbag, questa volta anche più insistente del solito, mentre il
sound sembra voler evolvere in un’atmosfera minimale atta all’attesa
dell’esplosione chitarristica. Questa volta si avvalgono della collaborazione
di tre special guest che rispondono ai nomi di Kristian Hultgren (basso), Ole
Michael Bjørndal (chitarra), e Simen Valldal Johannessen (tastiere).
Si
aggira sempre quel velo di malinconia che confina con la riflessione,
difficilmente in questa musica si alza la voce, canti introspettivi ben
eseguiti dalla voce di Tostrup. “Tyrants And Kings” alza il ritmo (per modo di
dire) e potrebbe benissimo risiedere nella discografia dei tedeschi RPWL, anche
se davvero c’è molto sentore di dejà vu. Il ritornello è sempre funzionale, una
formula oramai rodata a dovere. Buono l’arrangiamento delle tastiere in
lontananza. A volte ho la sensazione che cambino soltanto i titoli delle
canzoni tanto alcune si somiglino fra di loro, non è una cattiveria questa, ma
un dato oggettivo, eppure aleggia sempre grande magia.
Un
arpeggio apre “Awakening”, da qui in poi l’album sale qualitativamente con le
prerogative annunciate. Trattasi di ballata con buoni effetti sonori che
potrebbero ricordare i Porcupine Tree, ma la chitarra svolta nuovamente verso
gli ultimi Pink Floyd. Chi non vorrebbe aver scritto “Erase” per la propria
band? Un brano sincopato, misterioso, alienato, in attesa del lancio epico in
cui l’ascolto resta sospeso in un limbo mentale vigilante. Immancabilmente il
finale è come lo si attende. Ma sono i quindici minuti di “Tear It Down” a
sottolineare la grandezza degli Airbag. Quindi…Nulla di nuovo al fronte. Viva
