Quando vedo in Italia giovani artisti cimentarsi in un genere musicale come il Progressive Rock, nutro ancora speranza per il sostentamento della bellezza. La nostra nazione è ricca di band odierne che s’immergono in queste sonorità dal sapore passato, chi lo fa in maniera più fedele agli originali, e chi invece tenta nuove soluzioni, entrambe fondamentali perché la storia non va mai dimenticata, anche se poi ci si attiva verso un mutamento dello status quo. Non c’è futuro senza la memoria, come diceva Primo Levi.  
I baresi Hora Prima sono un'altra delle nostre realtà di cui andare fieri. Si formano nel 2015 da un’idea di Francesco Bux (batteria e voce) e di Domenico De Zio (chitarra). A loro, nel corso degli anni si aggiungono Gianluca De Bene (chitarra), Roberto Gomes (tastiere e voce) e Valeria Tritto (basso). Con questa formazione portano alla luce il buon debutto “L’Uomo Delle Genti” (Ma.Ra.Cash Records - 2020), disco accolto con entusiasmo sia dal pubblico che dalla critica di settore. L’attenzione su di loro resta alta grazie anche alle numerose date live (Finalisti nazionali Sanremo Rock, AlbeRockBello Festival, Premio Morris, Veruno Festival), comparse televisive e interviste su giornali e libri.  Tornano dopo cinque anni con “Hora Prima” e una nuova formazione: Andrea Catalano (voce), Domenico De Zio (chitarra), Roberto Di Lernia (basso, voce), Francesco Bux (batteria, synth, voce), e Roberto Gomes (tastiere, voce).
Lo stile musicale attinge in numerosi gruppi, la lista sarebbe davvero lunga e inutile in quanto ognuno di voi noterà un riferimento a qualcuno o qualcosa, possano essere il Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, che la PFM, o i Gentle Giant, insomma tanta carne al fuoco che lascio a voi cucinare.
“Hora Prima” contiene sei canzoni più una bonus track, la cover del brano “Le Roi Soleil” dei New Trolls tratto dall’album “Concerto Grosso N° 2”.
Essendo questa musica colta (così viene spesso nominata da molti fruitori), di certo i testi non possono essere da meno, quindi affrontano problematiche odierne come l’uso improprio dell’intelligenza artificiale nei confronti della creatività, oppure del rapporto uomo moderno e religione, fino ad analizzare il consumismo.
Subito gli otto minuti abbondanti di “Uomo Ancestrale (Primordio)” consegnano a noi una band consapevole dei propri mezzi e dell’obbiettivo da raggiungere. Dopo un inizio orchestrale, la voce di Andrea Catalano subentra con buona enfasi e si dimostra all’altezza dell’articolata composizione, fra PFM e Gentle Giant. Sentori passati fermano momentaneamente il tempo in una staffetta fra cambi di ritmo e di stili (Neal Morse docet). Anche gli assolo strumentali non sono messi lì per caso.
“Intelligenza Artificiale” inizia con vigore fra chitarra elettrica alla King Crimson e tastiere, tuttavia la melodia prettamente italica è sempre presente con quella punta di mediterraneità che ci contraddistingue. Qui Catalano tocca alte vette.
Si dimostra più intrigante e ricercata nelle soluzioni elettroniche “Deus Ex Machina”, qualcuno scorgerà schegge impazzite di Area, ma stabilire questo sta nella cultura musicale di ognuno di noi, infatti anche “On The Run” dei Pink Floyd non dista poi di molto, neppure il primo Battiato. E infine l’apertura strumentale molto gradevole immersa nel mondo Caravan di “Nothing At All / It’s Coming Soon / Nothing at All”. Brano top.
“Delirium Omnibus” è cantata in inglese ed è maggiormente prossima alla formula canzone. “Diari Dalla IV Dimensione” include passaggi nell’Hard Prog, mentre la conclusiva “Al Khwarizmi” è giocosa nel ritmo, apportando freschezza all’insieme. Gli anni ’70 sono rispettati in tutto e per tutto.
La cover di “Le Roi Soleil” è ben fatta, una bella rispolverata a un piccolo classico della band genovese New Trolls.
Impossibile restare indifferenti alla fine dell’ascolto, posso paragonare gli Hora Prima a un astronave capace di spostarsi velocemente fra generi ed ere, in più l’equipaggio ha il completo controllo della situazione. Disco consigliatissimo anche a chi per la prima volta si accosta al Progressive Rock. MS

When I see young artists in Italy tackling a musical genre like Progressive Rock, I still have hope for the sustenance of beauty. Our nation is rich in current bands that immerse themselves in these sounds with a past flavor, some do it in a more faithful way to the originals, and others try new solutions, both are fundamental because history should never be forgotten, even if we then move towards changing the status quo. There's no future without memory, as Primo Levi said.
The Bari-based Hora Prima are another reality we're proud of. They were formed in 2015 from an idea by Francesco Bux (drums and vocals) and Domenico De Zio (guitar). Over the years, they were joined by Gianluca De Bene (guitar), Roberto Gomes (keyboards and vocals), and Valeria Tritto (bass). With this lineup, they released their good debut "L'Uomo Delle Genti" (Ma.Ra.Cash Records - 2020), an album that was enthusiastically received by both the public and sector critics. The attention on them remains high thanks also to numerous live performances (national finalists Sanremo Rock, AlbeRockBello Festival, Premio Morris, Veruno Festival), TV appearances, and interviews in newspapers and books.
They return after five years with "Hora Prima" and a new lineup: Andrea Catalano (vocals), Domenico De Zio (guitar), Roberto Di Lernia (bass, vocals), Francesco Bux (drums, synth, vocals), and Roberto Gomes (keyboards, vocals).
The musical style draws on numerous groups, the list would be really long and unnecessary because each of you will notice a reference to someone or something, whether it's Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, PFM, or Gentle Giant, there's plenty of meat to chew on that I leave to you to cook.
"Hora Prima" contains six songs plus a bonus track, the cover of the New Trolls' song "Le Roi Soleil" from the album "Concerto Grosso N° 2".
Given that this music is cultured (as it's often referred to by many users), the lyrics can't be any less, so they tackle current issues like the improper use of artificial intelligence in relation to creativity, or the relationship between modern man and religion, up to analyzing consumerism.
The over eight minutes of "Uomo Ancestrale (Primordio)" immediately deliver a band aware of their means and the objective to reach. After an orchestral beginning, Andrea Catalano's voice intervenes with good emphasis and proves to be up to the complex composition, between PFM and Gentle Giant. Past hints momentarily stop time in a relay between changes in rhythm and style (Neal Morse teaches us). Even the instrumental solos are not there by chance.
"Intelligenza Artificiale" starts with vigor between electric guitar à la King Crimson and keyboards, yet the typically Italian melody is always present with that touch of Mediterranean-ness that distinguishes us. Here Catalano reaches high peaks.
"Deus Ex Machina" is more intriguing and researched in electronic solutions, some might see shards of Area, but establishing this depends on each of our musical cultures, indeed "On The Run" by Pink Floyd isn't that far off, nor is the early Battiato. And finally, the very pleasant instrumental opening immersed in the Caravan world of "Nothing At All / It's Coming Soon / Nothing at All". Top-notch track.
"Delirium Omnibus" is sung in English and is more akin to the song formula. "Diari Dalla IV Dimensione" includes passages in Hard Prog, while the concluding "Al Khwarizmi" is playful in rhythm, bringing freshness to the whole. The 1970s are respected in every way.
The cover of "Le Roi Soleil" is well done, a nice dusting off of a small classic by the Genoese band New Trolls.
It's impossible to remain indifferent at the end of the listening experience; I can compare Hora Prima to a spaceship capable of moving quickly between genres and eras, and the crew has full control of the situation. Highly recommended album, even for those approaching Progressive Rock for the first time. MS
