Davide Moscato, in arte Mesmerising, torna a far parlare di sé con il nuovo EP “Here And Beyond”. L’autore inizia la carriera musicale come cantante da piano-bar, frequentando molti locali nel mondo, fino a giungere al 2012 con la realizzazione del primo album intitolato “The Golden Dawn Of The Tramp”, con canzoni scritte nell’età scolastica. Ma il vero esordio importante è “Mental Maze” nel 2016, con il quale ottiene due Akademia Music Awards in Florida per i singoli “Crossing The Infinity” e “From The Ashes”. Dopo un’apparizione al Sanremo Rock nel 2017 con la sua band The Files, Moscato si dedica al nuovo album “The Clutters Storyteller” (2020), che vede suonare con lui artisti di tutto rispetto, quasi la Zband al completo, con Fabio Zuffanti (basso), Martin Grice (fiati), Giovanni Pastorino (tastiere), Paolo Tixi (batteria) e Simone Amodeo (chitarra). In tutti questi anni, Mesmerising vede accrescere l’esperienza e la qualità, sino a giungere all’ottimo album omonimo del 2023.
Oggi “Here And Beyond” è un ulteriore passo in avanti per quello che concerne la personalità del cantante tastierista, che questa volta si avvale della collaborazione di musicisti come Maurizio Bellani (chitarra), Cristiano Garagna (seconda chitarra), Matteo Olivieri (basso) e Stefano Cattalini (batteria).
Quattro i brani presentati, con la copertina dell’artista bresciano Francesco Bonardi, rappresentante una scultura elaborata successivamente al computer da Moscato stesso e Stefano Cattalini. Il breve viaggio sonoro, che dura nella totalità venticinque minuti, è un concept che analizza l’introspezione umana, un’osservazione profonda vista attraverso figure come la Monade.
“Solitary Spark” tratta l'essere umano come un bambino alla ricerca del proprio significato sulla terra. Le tastiere aprono in modalità Ayreon per poi sfociare nell’ensemble degli strumenti, in cui la voce ben si inserisce in un ritmo Reggae. Ottime le registrazioni di Michele Borlini, effettuate nel BigMic Studio di Mantova. Il brano gode di coralità, cambi di stile e tuttavia sorretto sempre da un buon motivo di base, che in alcuni arpeggi di chitarra rimanda agli anni ’70, quando l’Equipe 84 faceva molta della storia della musica italiana. Intelligente il bilanciamento tra cantato e assolo strumentale, il quale rende tutto molto scorrevole e piacevole; aggiungerei anche dedicato a chi ama il Neo Prog.
Segue “Lighting The Candle”, brano più introspettivo, il cui testo è di Lee Underwood, chitarrista di Tim Buckley. Qui si parla di umanità spaventata e perduta, la quale cerca un barlume di sanità mentale attraverso l'idea di una candela, tra speranza e silenzio. Le tastiere sono protagoniste e accompagnatrici allo stesso tempo. Una ballata elegante che denota la crescita artistica di Moscato.
Con “Man About Town” si ritorna alla tematica iniziale; canzone elettrica, articolata e ben strutturata in tutti i dettagli, in cui l’insieme è la propria forza. Il Prog risiede in tutti i cambi di ritmo e una ricerca per la formula canzone non del tutto scontata, grazie anche ad effetti eco e voice phone. Tuttavia, mai viene persa di vista la fruibilità dei motivi. Questa canzone mi è piaciuta particolarmente, in essa ho riscontrato anelli che congiungono il passato con il presente, dove ancora una volta le chitarre elettriche (qui in modalità Pink Floyd) si esibiscono al meglio, rilasciando assolo profondi e ficcanti.
La conclusione spetta a “A Life Well Lived”, qui il protagonista è sul letto di morte e pensa a tutto ciò che ha realizzato nella vita, parlandone in modo felice, e alla fine del pezzo diventa un tutt'uno con l'universo; l’uomo come parte di tutto. Altro movimento ricco di mutamenti e buone soluzioni.
Abbandonate ciò che vi è noto e osate immergervi in ciò che non vi è conosciuto, il cambiamento potrebbe sorprendervi e donarvi nuova spinta propulsiva per la vita. “Here And Beyond” ne è perfetta colonna sonora. MS.

Davide Moscato, known as Mesmerising, is back in the spotlight with his new EP “Here And Beyond”. The artist began his musical career as a piano-bar singer, performing in many venues around the world, until 2012 when he released his first album titled “The Golden Dawn Of The Tramp”, featuring songs written during his school years. However, his real breakthrough came with “Mental Maze” in 2016, which earned him two Akademia Music Awards in Florida for the singles “Crossing The Infinity” and “From The Ashes”. After a performance at Sanremo Rock in 2017 with his band The Files, Moscato dedicated himself to the new album “The Clutters Storyteller” (2020), featuring respected artists such as Fabio Zuffanti (bass), Martin Grice (wind instruments), Giovanni Pastorino (keyboards), Paolo Tixi (drums), and Simone Amodeo (guitar). Over the years, Mesmerising has gained experience and quality, culminating in the excellent self-titled album of 2023.
Today, “Here And Beyond” is a further step forward in terms of the singer-keyboardist's personality, who this time collaborates with musicians such as Maurizio Bellani (guitar), Cristiano Garagna (second guitar), Matteo Olivieri (bass), and Stefano Cattalini (drums).
The EP features four tracks, with a cover art by Brescia-based artist Francesco Bonardi, representing a sculpture elaborated on computer by Moscato himself and Stefano Cattalini. The brief sonic journey, lasting a total of twenty-five minutes, is a concept that analyzes human introspection, a deep observation seen through figures like the Monad.
“Solitary Spark” treats the human being like a child searching for their own meaning on earth. The keyboards open in Ayreon mode, then flowing into the ensemble of instruments, where the voice fits perfectly into a Reggae rhythm. Excellent recordings by Michele Borlini, made at BigMic Studio in Mantua. The track features chorality, style changes, and yet is always supported by a good basic melody, which in some guitar arpeggios recalls the 1970s, when Equipe 84 was making history in Italian music. Intelligent balance between vocals and instrumental solo, which makes everything very smooth and enjoyable; I'd also say it's dedicated to Neo Prog fans.
Next is “Lighting The Candle”, a more introspective track, with lyrics by Lee Underwood, guitarist of Tim Buckley. Here, we talk about a frightened and lost humanity, seeking a glimmer of sanity through the idea of a candle, between hope and silence. The keyboards are both protagonists and accompanists. An elegant ballad that denotes Moscato's artistic growth.
With “Man About Town”, we return to the initial theme; an electric song, articulated and well-structured in every detail, where the ensemble is its own strength. Prog resides in all the rhythm changes and a search for a song formula that's not entirely predictable, thanks to eco effects and voice phone. However, the usability of the motifs is never lost. I particularly enjoyed this song, where I detected links between the past and present, where once again the electric guitars (here in Pink Floyd mode) excel, releasing deep and piercing solos.
The conclusion is “A Life Well Lived”, where the protagonist is on their deathbed, thinking about everything they've achieved in life, speaking about it happily, and at the end of the piece, becoming one with the universe; the human being as part of everything. Another movement rich in changes and good solutions.
Abandon what is known to you and dare to immerse yourself in what is unknown; change could surprise you and give you a new driving force for life. “Here And Beyond” is the perfect soundtrack. MS.
