Esistono certezze che si radicano nei nostri pensieri avvalorate da reiterate situazioni, come nel caso del disegnatore grafico Ed Unitsky, sempre associato a band importanti, ma soprattutto ad album di qualità. Quando vedo una sua opera a rappresentare un disco, istintivamente capisco che trattasi di qualcosa di musicalmente valido. E anche nel caso dei The Guildmaster non mi sono sbagliato.
Impegnato in un contesto Progressive Folk, il progetto nasce dall’unione di differenti realtà europee, ossia dall’incontro del batterista finlandese Kimmo Pörsti (The Samurai Of Prog, Paidarion, Mist Season) e il polistrumentista spagnolo Rafael Pacha (collaboratore con TSOP, Last Knight, Circle Project e Manoel Macía) a seguito della collaborazione nell'ultimo album solista di Kimmo, Wayfarer. A completare la band si aggiungono Marco Bernard (TSOP) al basso e Alessandro Di Benedetti (Mad Crayon, Inner Prospekt) alle tastiere e voce.
“Gathering Of Souls” è il terzo album in studio dopo gli ottimi “The Knight And The Ghost” (2020) e “Liber De Dictis” (2022). Si presenta in una splendida e curata edizione cartonata apribile in tre parti con i suddetti disegni di Ed Unitsky e un ricco libretto di venti facciate contenente descrizioni, foto e testi, vero piacere per gli occhi. Assieme a loro partecipano gli ospiti Paula Pörsti (voce), Yogi Lang (RPWL) (voce), Nick Markham (voce), Giovanni Mazzotti (flauto), Alfonso Romero (Chapman Stick), John Wilkinson (voce), e Tony Riveryman (chitarra elettrica).
Rispetto agli album passati, “Gathering Of Souls” ha un approccio maggiormente Rock Progressive, spostando di poco le coordinate del Folk, e si evince dalla durata maggiore rispetto al passato degli otto brani che compongono l’opera. I colori della copertina ben si sposano con questa musica proveniente da una tavolozza pregna di gradazioni.
Lo strumentale “The Crusade Of Earl Birger” composto da Kimmo Pörsti trasporta subito l’ascoltatore in storie finlandesi ambientate nel 1320. Castello in fiamme, orde di cavalieri si stagliano avanti alla nostra vista supportati da quel sono antico avvalorato da flauto, cromorno e arpeggi di chitarra.
“Where Are You?”, una domanda che ci si pone quando viene a mancare vicino a noi un amico, una persona cara che ci può essere di sostegno durante il cammino della nostra vita. Arie pastorali qui disegnano lande bucoliche e questa musica composta da Pacha gode di un velo di magia innata, quella senza tempo. Tante le strumentazioni classiche che sono adoperate allo scopo, dal bouzouki al violino e al mandolino, tuttavia si presenta anche un ottimo assolo di chitarra elettrica. Il brano di oltre dieci minuti s’incastona perfettamente nel mondo Progressivo grazie anche alle tastiere Neo Prog di Alessandro Di Benedetti.
Con “Omnis Saltat Ad Solem (Solar Dance)”, si analizza un aspetto umano in cui oggi siamo decisamente carenti, lo spirito comune che forma la genesi dell’umanità e che ci rende più forti, qui rappresentato da un brano in cui la danza accomuna tutti.
Interpretata dall’ospite Yogi Lang della band tedesca RPWL “Blood And Oblivion” ci pone un quesito: quando nell’anno 1000 sei una persona spregevole e hai ucciso molte persone ma la mente con la vecchiaia si ammala e non ricordi più nulla… Chi sei ora, per le vittime, per la giustizia, per Dio e per coloro che ti amano? Questa è una suite di oltre dodici minuti, la più lunga dell’album, dove si può apprezzare a pieno il nuovo passo in avanti nella formula scrittura da parte dei The Guildmaster. Le parole e la musica sono di Alessandro Benedetti. Cambi di ritmo, staffetta fra chitarra e tastiere e molto altro ancora, fanno del brano un gradevole percorso nel mondo del Progressive Rock.
Con “Lo Prometido Es Deuda” si rispolvera la classica metafora affrontata da diverse band nel mondo del Prog, come ad esempio ha saputo fare la PFM nell’album “Ulisse” in cui si ricava che nella vita non è importante la partenza o l’arrivo all’obiettivo, piuttosto è il cammino. Il brano si avvale della viola da gamba, la cetra e il dulcimer suonati da Rafael Pacha, uno strumentale ricco di sonorità pacate e consolanti per l’animo.
Più gioviale “Mary The Jewess” cantata da Nick Markham dove si narrano le gesta coraggiose di Maria del tempo antico, in cui la volontà di farsi valere nei confronti dell’uomo è apprezzabile. L’andamento sposa sia il Folk che il Rock.
“Luonto Puhuu” vede Alfonso Romero al champman stick e Paula Pörsti cantare in finnico. Il brano gode di un fascino particolare sempre in bilico fra Folk e Rock con assolo strumentali bene eseguiti.
La chiusura rilassante spetta a “Sea And Sky” cantata da John Wilkinson, con Giovanni Mazzotti al flauto e Tony Riveryman impegnato in un ottimo assolo di chitarra.
“Gathering Of Souls” è un ulteriore passo in avanti per la discografia dei The Guildmaster, una maturità acquisita che si sta impreziosendo di nuovi innesti, quelli che rendono questa musica mai noiosa e sempre viva. Passato e presente a disposizione della nostra mente. MS

There are certainties that are rooted in our thoughts, supported by repeated situations, as in the case of graphic designer Ed Unitsky, always associated with important bands, but above all with quality albums. When I see one of his works representing a disc, I instinctively understand that it's something musically valid. And even in the case of The Guildmaster, I wasn't wrong.
Engaged in a Progressive Folk context, the project was born from the union of different European realities, the union of Finnish drummer Kimmo Pörsti (The Samurai Of Prog, Paidarion, Mist Season) and Spanish multi-instrumentalist Rafael Pacha (collaborator with TSOP, Last Knight, Circle Project, and Manoel Macía) following their collaboration on Kimmo's latest solo album, Wayfarer. To complete the band, Marco Bernard (TSOP) on bass and Alessandro Di Benedetti (Mad Crayon, Inner Prospekt) on keyboards and vocals join in.
"Gathering Of Souls" is the third studio album after the excellent "The Knight And The Ghost" (2020) and "Liber De Dictis" (2022). It comes in a beautiful and carefully crafted three-part foldable hardcover edition with the aforementioned Ed Unitsky drawings and a rich 20-page booklet containing descriptions, photos, and lyrics, a true pleasure for the eyes. Along with them, the guests Paula Pörsti (vocals), Yogi Lang (RPWL) (vocals), Nick Markham (vocals), Giovanni Mazzotti (flute), Alfonso Romero (Chapman Stick), John Wilkinson (vocals), and Tony Riveryman (electric guitar) participate.
Compared to past albums, "Gathering Of Souls" has a more Progressive Rock approach, slightly shifting the Folk coordinates, and it's evident from the longer duration of the eight tracks that make up the work. The colors of the cover blend perfectly with this music coming from a palette full of gradations.
The instrumental "The Crusade Of Earl Birger" composed by Kimmo Pörsti immediately transports the listener to Finnish stories set in 1320. Burning castle, hordes of knights stand out before our sight, supported by that ancient sound enhanced by flute, cromorne, and guitar arpeggios.
"Where Are You?", a question we ask ourselves when a friend or a loved one who can be a support during our life's journey is no longer with us. Pastoral arias here depict bucolic landscapes, and this music composed by Pacha enjoys an innate magic, timeless. Many classical instrumentations are used for this purpose, from bouzouki to violin and mandolin, but there's also an excellent electric guitar solo. The over ten-minute track fits perfectly into the Progressive world thanks also to Alessandro Di Benedetti's Neo-Prog keyboards.
With "Omnis Saltat Ad Solem (Solar Dance)", we analyze a human aspect in which we are currently severely lacking, the common spirit that forms the genesis of humanity and makes us stronger, here represented by a track where dance brings everyone together.
Interpreted by guest Yogi Lang of the German band RPWL, "Blood And Oblivion" poses a question: when in the year 1000 you're a despicable person and have killed many people, but your mind gets sick with old age and you don't remember anything anymore... Who are you now, for the victims, for justice, for God, and for those who love you? This is a suite of over twelve minutes, the longest on the album, where you can fully appreciate the new step forward in the writing formula by The Guildmaster. The words and music are by Alessandro Benedetti. Changes in rhythm, relay between guitar and keyboards, and much more make the track a pleasant journey into the world of Progressive Rock.
With "Lo Prometido Es Deuda", the classic metaphor tackled by various bands in the Prog world is revisited, as PFM was able to do in the album "Ulisse", where it's understood that in life, it's not about the starting point or reaching the goal, but rather the journey. The track features the viola da gamba, the zither, and the dulcimer played by Rafael Pacha, an instrumental track rich in calm and soothing sonorities for the soul.
More jovial "Mary The Jewess" sung by Nick Markham, where the courageous deeds of ancient Mary are narrated, where the will to stand up against men is appreciable. The rhythm marries both Folk and Rock.
"Luonto Puhuu" features Alfonso Romero on Chapman Stick and Paula Pörsti singing in Finnish. The track enjoys a particular charm, always balancing between Folk and Rock with well-executed instrumental solos.
The relaxing closing is entrusted to "Sea And Sky" sung by John Wilkinson, with Giovanni Mazzotti on flute and Tony Riveryman engaged in an excellent guitar solo.
"Gathering Of Souls" is a further step forward for The Guildmaster's discography, an acquired maturity that's being enriched with new grafts, those that make this music never boring and always alive. Past and present at the disposal of our mind. MS.
