In alcuni casi, la letteratura viene presa come spunto per dare un nome a una band, come quello dei Pentesilea Road, dove Pentesilea è la città descritta nel libro "Le Città Invisibili" di Italo Calvino. Il chitarrista Vito Mainolfi inizia a comporre come one man band, per poi sentire successivamente la necessità di dare corpo alle proprie idee attraverso una band vera e propria, così nel 2021, coadiuvato da nomi importanti del settore Metal Prog, da luce al primo album intitolato proprio “Pentesilea Road”.
Mainolfi, oggi residente in Olanda, fa il bis con un doppio lavoro di diciotto brani dalla lunga durata di un’ora e quaranta minuti, dove l’Heavy Prog s’incontra con il Metal Prog. Esiste nell’album anche una Bonus track intitolata “The Geometry Of Nothing”, dove si può godere della prestazione canora di Zak Stevens (Savatage).
I Pentesilea Road sono composti da Vito F. Mainolfi alle chitarre, Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis, Temperance) alla voce, Ezio Di Ieso alle tastiere, Giovanni Montesano (Circle Du Soleil) al basso, e Alfonso Mocerino alla batteria. Molto bella la copertina creata da Tracy Lundgren di Twisted Gipsy Design, mentre l'artwork completo dell'album è realizzato da Prog Photo Agency.
Sono serviti tre lunghi anni per formare questo secondo album che si apre con la strumentale “Ode To The Reflective Mind”, qui si assaporano come in un aperitivo, gli scenari prossimi all’ascolto. I suoni registrati sono puliti, ben definiti e donano ampiezza all’insieme. Influenze Dream Theater sono presenti in differenti momenti, per questo serve anche una tecnica strumentale non indifferente, e al riguardo Mainolfi nell’assolo di chitarra sfoggia un armamentario davvero ragguardevole!
Rispetto l’esordio, “Sonnets From The Drowsiness” ha una scorza più dura e ruvida, l’amalgama con la formazione è probabilmente la chiave di lettura su questa evoluzione. “Inside Out” presenta la voce malleabile di Michele Guaitoli e il brano personalmente mi ricorda qualcosa degli immortali Saxon. Ci sono frangenti Heavy Prog come in “Pulse”, gradevole e facile da memorizzare. Se invece amate i Queensryche, allora “Solitary Walk” fa al caso vostro. Non mancano le semi ballate introspettive, “Aria” ne è un bellissimo esempio. Curata in tutti i particolari mostra non soltanto il lato tecnico elevato, bensì anche le qualità compositive a disposizione di Mainolfi e soci. Per chi li conoscesse, il brano è prossimo in territori cari ai canadesi Mystery.
La musica dei Pentesilea Road si lancia spesso in ambientazioni solari e capita in alcuni casi di intersecarsi anche con l’AOR, anche se non in maniera totale, come nel caso di “Underground”. Notevole “The Geometry Of Nothing”, mentre più tecnica, soprattutto in fase ritmica è “Mare Nostrum”. Gli assolo di chitarra (sempre molto sentiti da parte dell’esecutore) sono spesso la ciliegina sulla torta. Funzionano bene i crescendo emotivi, “Worlds Apart” ne possiede tutte le caratteristiche. Tuttavia esistono casi inversi, dove si parte con un Metal Prog sostenuto per poi lasciare spazio a movimenti riflessivi, “The Other Corner” rappresenta bene questo concetto. Elegante “Shrine”, soprattutto per l’uso delle tastiere. Da segnalare anche l’ottima “Septembers' Ghost”, “Remember, Now”, “A Relentless Elegy Of Laziness”, “The River Bend” e la conclusiva “The Physiopathology Of Every Day Dream”, dove in otto minuti la band mette tutte le proprie peculiarità.
“Sonnets From The Drowsiness” è un album consigliato agli amanti del Metal Prog, e mostra per l’ennesima volta (se ce ne dovesse essere ancora il bisogno) che il genere gode di buona salute. MS

In some cases, literature serves as inspiration for a band's name, as with Pentesilea Road, where Pentesilea is the city described in Italo Calvino's book "Invisible Cities". Guitarist Vito Mainolfi began composing as a one-man band, later feeling the need to bring his ideas to life through a full-fledged band. Thus, in 2021, aided by notable Metal Prog figures, their first album, "Pentesilea Road", was born.
Mainolfi, now residing in the Netherlands, follows up with a double album featuring 18 tracks and a total duration of one hour and 40 minutes, where Heavy Prog meets Metal Prog. The album also includes a bonus track titled "The Geometry Of Nothing", featuring vocals by Zak Stevens (Savatage).
Pentesilea Road consists of Vito F. Mainolfi on guitars, Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis, Temperance) on vocals, Ezio Di Ieso on keyboards, Giovanni Montesano (Circle Du Soleil) on bass, and Alfonso Mocerino on drums. The cover art, created by Tracy Lundgren of Twisted Gipsy Design, is stunning, while the complete album artwork is handled by Prog Photo Agency.
It took three long years to craft this second album, which opens with the instrumental "Ode To The Reflective Mind", offering a taste of what's to come. The recorded sounds are clean, well-defined, and add breadth to the overall mix. Dream Theater influences are present in various moments, requiring considerable instrumental technique, and Mainolfi showcases his impressive guitar solo skills!
Compared to their debut, "Sonnets From The Drowsiness" has a harder and rougher edge, likely due to the band's formation being the key to this evolution. "Inside Out" features Michele Guaitoli's versatile vocals and reminds me personally of something from the immortal Saxon. There are Heavy Prog moments like in "Pulse", which is pleasant and easy to remember. If you enjoy Queensryche, "Solitary Walk" is a good fit. The album also includes introspective semi-ballads like "Aria", showcasing not only technical prowess but also the compositional qualities of Mainolfi and company. For those familiar with the band Mystery, the track ventures into similar territory.
Pentesilea Road's music often explores sunny landscapes, sometimes intersecting with AOR, though not entirely, as in the case of "Underground". Notable tracks include "The Geometry Of Nothing" and the more technical "Mare Nostrum", especially in its rhythmic phase. The guitar solos (always heartfelt and well-executed) are often the icing on the cake. Emotional crescendos work well, with "Worlds Apart" possessing all the characteristics. However, there are also cases where the band starts with sustained Metal Prog before giving way to reflective movements, with "The Other Corner" representing this concept well. "Shrine" is elegant, particularly due to the use of keyboards. Other standout tracks include "Septembers' Ghost", "Remember, Now", "A Relentless Elegy Of Laziness", "The River Bend", and the concluding "The Physiopathology Of Every Day Dream", where the band showcases all its peculiarities over eight minutes.
"Sonnets From The Drowsiness" is an album recommended for fans of Metal Prog, demonstrating once again (if needed) that the genre is in good health. MS
