La nostra vita è una lotta continua contro il tempo. Tutti corriamo per raggiungere chissà quale obbiettivo prefissato, quando in realtà sarebbe il caso di fermarci a riflettere su cosa sia necessariamente giusto o meno, ma anche per ritagliarci un poco del suddetto tempo per noi stessi.
L’argomento è spesso ghermito come fonte d’ispirazione da molti artisti, che siano questi dei pittori, scrittori o musicisti.
Fra le band più interessanti di Hard Rock Melodico in Italia troviamo i Soul Seller, che affrontano il tema nel loro terzo album in studio (tralasciando demo ed EP) intitolato proprio “Fights Against Time”.
La band nasce a Torino nel 1999, ed è fondata dai fratelli Dave e Mike Zublena. Esordiscono con “Back To Life” (Avenue Of Allies), un disco prodotto da Alessandro Del Vecchio che raccoglie consensi grazie soprattutto al brano “Keep On Moving” in collaborazione con il chitarrista tedesco Oliver Hartmann (Avantasia, ex-At Vance, ex-Iron Mask). Il brano sarà incluso anche nella compilation Classic Rock Magazine. Dopo date live nel 2016 è il turno di “Matter Of Faith” (Tanzan Music), dove la band presenta un approccio sonoro più moderno. Il successo di quest’album li conduce ad aprire concerti per band blasonate come Europe, Bonfire e Harem Scarem.
La formazione odierna vede tra le file Eric Concas (voce, cori), Dale Sanders (chitarre, cori), Dave Zublena (chitarre, cori), Stefania Sarre (basso, cori), Alessandro “Wallino” Rimoldi (tastiere, cori), e Italo Graziana (batteria, percussioni, cori). Il frontman Eric Concas è anche l’autore del bellissimo artwork e grafica del CD, contenete anche note di copertina introduttive del leggendario designer Hugh Syme, creatore di alcune delle copertine di album più iconiche di tutti i tempi (“2112” dei Rush, “New Jersey”dei Bon Jovi, “Slip Of The Tongue” dei Whitesnake e “Cherry Pie” dei Warrant) ed ex tastierista della Ian Thomas Band.
Ben tredici le canzoni contenute, tutte di gran classe e raffinatezza per un genere che ha saputo sempre trattare con i guanti le melodie.
Apre le danze “One Wasted Paradise”, un Hard Rock dalla ritmica sostenuta, caro a band come Bon Jovi, Fastway, e simili. Difficile all’ascolto non cantare assieme a loro.
Ciò accade anche in “The Sound Of The Last Survivor”, arioso brano che pur rilasciando déjà vu, ha dalla sua tanta vitalità, in più la voce di Eric Concas a tratti richiama la cadenza di Ronnie James Dio. Un pianoforte apre la title track “Fights Against Time” per poi lanciarsi verso l’eterno e inossidabile Hard Rock anni ’80.
Andamento più rilassato in “Autumn Call” una finestra in questa stagione in cui la malinconia fa spesso capolino, ma l’esperienza dei Soul Seller fuoriesce al meglio nel singolo ”City Of Dragons”, accattivante e coinvolgente (Scorpions style). Non ci sono momenti di stanca, la band inanella una sequenza di canzoni vive come raramente accade d’imbattersi. Cito alcune come la variegata “Angel Of Desire”, la ballata “Fallen Kingdom” con un bel solo di chitarra a effetto, la bellezza di “Feel Alive Again”, e la galanteria di “Alice”.
“Fights Against Time” è in definitiva un album ben confezionato, gradevole, puro, come l’anima di chi fa di questo genere uno stile di vita. Contagioso. MS

Our life is a constant struggle against time. We all rush to achieve some pre-set goal, when in reality, it would be wiser to pause and reflect on what is truly right or wrong—and also to carve out a bit of that time for ourselves.
This theme is often seized upon as a source of inspiration by many artists, whether they be painters, writers, or musicians.
Among the most interesting Melodic Hard Rock bands in Italy, we find Soul Seller, who tackle this very topic in their third studio album (excluding demos and EPs), aptly titled Fights Against Time.
The band was formed in Turin in 1999 by brothers Dave and Mike Zublena. They debuted with Back To Life (Avenue Of Allies), an album produced by Alessandro Del Vecchio, which was well received, especially thanks to the track “Keep On Moving,” featuring German guitarist Oliver Hartmann (Avantasia, ex-At Vance, ex-Iron Mask). The track was also included in the Classic Rock Magazine compilation.
After several live dates, in 2016 came Matter Of Faith (Tanzan Music), where the band embraced a more modern sound approach. The success of that album led them to open for renowned bands such as Europe, Bonfire, and Harem Scarem.
The current lineup includes Eric Concas (vocals, backing vocals), Dale Sanders (guitars, backing vocals), Dave Zublena (guitars, backing vocals), Stefania Sarre (bass, backing vocals), Alessandro “Wallino” Rimoldi (keyboards, backing vocals), and Italo Graziana (drums, percussion, backing vocals).
Frontman Eric Concas is also the creator of the beautiful artwork and graphics of the CD, which also features introductory liner notes by the legendary designer Hugh Syme, the mind behind some of the most iconic album covers of all time (2112 by Rush, New Jersey by Bon Jovi, Slip Of The Tongue by Whitesnake, and Cherry Pie by Warrant), and former keyboardist for the Ian Thomas Band.
The album contains thirteen tracks, all crafted with elegance and sophistication—a hallmark of a genre that has always handled melodies with care.
The album kicks off with “One Wasted Paradise,” an energetic Hard Rock track reminiscent of bands like Bon Jovi, Fastway, and the like. It’s hard not to sing along.
The same goes for “The Sound Of The Last Survivor,” an airy track that, while evoking some déjà vu, bursts with vitality. Eric Concas’s vocals at times echo the cadence of Ronnie James Dio.
A piano opens the title track “Fights Against Time,” which then launches into timeless, unyielding '80s Hard Rock.
The mood relaxes with “Autumn Call,” a window into the season where melancholy often peeks through. But the band’s experience shines in the single “City Of Dragons”—catchy and engaging (Scorpions style).
There are no dull moments; the band strings together a sequence of vibrant songs, a rarity these days. Standout moments include the dynamic “Angel Of Desire,” the ballad “Fallen Kingdom” with an emotional guitar solo, the beauty of “Feel Alive Again,” and the charm of “Alice.”
Fights Against Time is, ultimately, a well-crafted, enjoyable, and sincere album—just like the soul of those who live this genre as a lifestyle. Infectious. MS
