Si sa che il Metal è musica d’impatto, con gli intenti di destabilizzare la massa. Nasce nel 1978 proprio per porsi come nuova ondata di protesta nei confronti della società, e lo fa attraverso tematiche e suoni robusti. Allora l’Heavy Metal venne etichettato da molta stampa come un genere dalla breve vita, ma il tempo non solo ce lo consegna in uno stato di salute ottimale, ma addirittura evoluto. Con il passare del tempo acquisisce nuove strumentazioni agli albori scartati a prescindere, come le tastiere, i synth, e addirittura l’elettronica. Su questo si apre il capitolo Metal Progressive, e da qui gli innesti non finiscono mai.
Per alcuni ascoltatori unire distorsione con la tecnica e certe influenze “colte” è un’incongruenza non ammissibile, per altri è semplicemente una genialata che crea una nuova appartenenza. Di conseguenza anche il Progressive Rock va a contaminare il Metal, e ne scaturisce un ulteriore sound. Ma non si è mai finito di aggiungere sonorità a sonorità, c’è sempre chi nel tempo ricerca e ama stupire (e stupirsi), generalmente questo accade in Inghilterra e in America, ma anche noi italiani sappiamo farci valere.
La grande casa discografica Inside Out infatti si accorge delle qualità tecniche e compositive della band milanese Benthos che dopo l’ottimo esordio intitolato “II” dell’anno 2021 si è saputa mettere in luce grazie ad uno stile che unisce l’Hardcore al Jazz e al Metal Prog. Qui rientriamo nel caso citato, quello della musica destabilizzante, non adatta a chi predilige la classica formula canzone. Si sa altresì che il Rock e i suoi derivati sono viatico di protesta e i Benthos non fanno eccezione andando nei testi, comunque poetici, ad analizzare la nostra esistenza.
I dodici brani che compongono “From Nothing” spaziano , graffiano, accarezzano, distruggono, illudono… Colpiscono!
E non si può che iniziare con un classico breve intro sonoro qui dal titolo “It Stars”, e poi via subito nell’universo Benthos attraverso la title track. Qui le carte in gioco sono già sul tavolo, il modus operandi della band è chiaro e non accetta compromessi.
La robustezza del sound è ancor più palese in “Let Me Plunge”, così vengono a galla le ottime qualità vocali di Landillo, capaci di adeguarsi a ogni tipo di situazione. La sezione ritmica funziona perfettamente dimostrando un intesa di base davvero rodata. La rabbia si fa spazio anche in “As A Cordyceps”, così gli ampi sprazzi di sereno, tutto ciò può lasciare l’ascoltatore alquanto interdetto. Il brano più lungo dell’album s’intitola “Fossil”, sei minuti e mezzo di follia sonora e di ricerca per la melodia, un mare emotivo.
“Recompose”, come suggerisce il titolo, resetta l’ascolto attraverso un minuto e poco più di suoni pacati e psichedelici, per poi lasciare il campo a uno dei pezzi che ho apprezzato di più per coraggio compositivo, “The Giant Child”.
Tutto il resto scorre attraverso sorprese che preferisco lasciare a voi più curiosi di scoprire.
Gabriele Landillo (voce), Gabriele Papagni (chitarra), Enrico Tripodi (chitarra), Alberto Fiorani (basso), e Alessandro Tagliani (batteria), sono artefici di un disco che di certo farà discutere molto chi non ama cambi umorali repentini, tutti gli altri sicuramente lo eleveranno a capolavoro. La verità, come solitamente accade, è nel mezzo, “From Nothing” è un bell’album in cui la ragione spesso si alterna alla fantasia, il tutto con eleganza e professionalità. Merita un attento ascolto. It's known that Metal is an impactful music genre, intended to destabilize the masses. Born in 1978 as a new wave of protest against society, it does so through robust themes and sounds. Back then, Heavy Metal was labeled by much of the press as a genre with a short lifespan, but time not only delivers it in optimal health but also evolved. Over time, it acquires new instrumentation initially discarded, like keyboards, synths, and even electronics. This opens up the chapter on Metal Progressive, and from here, the grafts never end.
For some listeners, combining distortion with technique and certain "cultivated" influences is an unacceptable incongruity, while for others, it's simply a stroke of genius that creates a new belonging. Consequently, Progressive Rock also contaminates Metal, resulting in a further sound. But one never finishes adding sonorities to sonorities; there's always someone who, over time, researches and loves to amaze (and be amazed), generally this happens in England and America, but we Italians also know how to make ourselves heard.
The great record label Inside Out indeed notices the technical and compositional qualities of the Milanese band Benthos, who, after the excellent debut titled "II" in 2021, has managed to stand out thanks to a style that combines Hardcore with Jazz and Metal Prog. Here, we enter the mentioned case of destabilizing music, not suitable for those who prefer the classic song formula. It's also known that Rock and its derivatives are a vehicle for protest, and Benthos is no exception, analyzing our existence in their poetic lyrics.
The twelve tracks that make up "From Nothing" range, scratch, caress, destroy, deceive... They hit!
And one can't but start with a classic brief sound intro here titled "It Stars", and then immediately into the Benthos universe through the title track. Here, the cards are already on the table, the band's modus operandi is clear and doesn't accept compromises.
The robustness of the sound is even more evident in "Let Me Plunge", so the excellent vocal qualities of Landillo come to the surface, capable of adapting to every type of situation. The rhythmic section functions perfectly, demonstrating a truly well-oiled basic understanding. Anger makes space also in "As A Cordyceps", so the wide streaks of serenity, all this can leave the listener rather perplexed. The longest track on the album is titled "Fossil", six and a half minutes of sonic madness and search for melody, an emotional sea.
"Recompose", as the title suggests, resets the listening experience through a minute and a bit more of calm and psychedelic sounds, to then leave room for one of the pieces I appreciated the most for compositional courage, "The Giant Child".
Everything else flows through surprises that I prefer to leave to those more curious to discover.
Gabriele Landillo (vocals), Gabriele Papagni (guitar), Enrico Tripodi (guitar), Alberto Fiorani (bass), and Alessandro Tagliani (drums) are the creators of a disc that will certainly spark much discussion among those who don't like sudden mood changes; all others will surely elevate it to a masterpiece. The truth, as usually happens, is in the middle; "From Nothing" is a great album where reason often alternates with fantasy, all with elegance and professionalism. It deserves careful listening. MS.
