Questo disco è un orgoglio per la musica italiana, ma al tempo della sua realizzazione il 1971, venne omertosamente ignorato da tutti i media, sia dalla tv che dalla radio, perché? Ne parlerò a breve, intanto mi piace sottolineare la curiosa battaglia per lo scettro di primo disco ufficiale Prog italiano fra poche band del periodo, i Giganti, Le Orme, gli Osanna, i Trip ed i Rovescio della Medaglia, battaglia secondo alcuni critici che vince le Orme. I Giganti se ne escono con questo concept album (a tema unico) dopo una serie di successi Pop notevoli, da "Tema" a "Proposta (Mettete dei fiori nei vostri cannoni)", passando per "La Bomba Atomica" , "Io E Il Presidente" ed "Una Ragazza In Due". Festival, passaggi tv, radio e tanti concerti per la band composta da Giacomo "Mino" Di Martino (voce e chitarra), Francesco "Checco" Marsella (voce, tastiere), Sergio Di Martino (voce, basso, chitarra) ed Enrico Maria Papes (voce e batteria), tanto successo meritato e goduto. Ma con "Terra In Bocca", loro ultima realizzazione discografica, accade qualcosa che rompe il giocattolo Giganti, non per colpa di attriti interni, come generalmente accade in un abbandono delle scene, ma per l'argomento trattato nel concept album: La mafia.
Si parla di Sicilia e di acqua, guarda caso un argomento ancora oggi attuale! I passaggi tv non arrivano più, e la radio passa soltanto una volta il disco, per meglio dire il tema portante del'album "Il Pescatore (Lungo e disteso ti hanno trovato)", poi.... il nulla. Coraggio e che coraggio questo dei Giganti, osare sia nella musica che nei temi. In verità la band non è mai stata scontata ed ordinaria, nel tempo ha saputo farsi apprezzare per le coralità in primis, poi anche per le tematiche sempre vicine ai giovani. Solo a guardare la copertina subiamo un pugno allo stomaco, questa diventerà una dei pezzi forti del suo autore, quello che presta il suo corpo disteso al pavimento, quel Gianni Sassi che farà della casa discografica Cramps una casa solida per band d'avanguardia, oltre che mente ispiratrice degli Area. Frankenstein, questo il suo futuro soprannome, arruolerà fra le fila della Cramps artisti notevoli come Eugenio Finardi, Area, Bella Band, Arte e Mestieri, Alberto Camerini e moltissimi altri. Un corpo disteso, con una scarpa mancante, un corpo con delle margherite in mano, colto di sorpresa con dei colpi al petto e dalla scarpa restante nel piede, la foto dei Giganti attaccata sotto la suola. Il gene Sassi mette il seme. I testi sono scritti da Piero De Rossi, perché comunque  i Giganti amano collaborare con artisti vari, non a caso ciclano nella band anche Ares Tavolazzi (Area), Ellade Bandini, Vince Tempera, Marcello Dellacasa, Gigi Rizzi e Michelangelo La Bionda.
Morte e vendetta, un contadino che si rifiuta di comperare l'acqua dalla mafia ad un prezzo esorbitante al bicchiere, ma che anzi minaccia di cercarla nella propria terra per poi regalarla a tutti. Conseguente morte del proprio figlio sedicenne, ucciso a bruciapelo per ritorsione dalla mafia. Conclusione con la vendetta privata, il contadino attende l'assassino in un crocevia per rendergli pariglia. Colpo di scena, mentre si scava per sotterrare il figlio si scopre l'acqua!
Gli inconfondibili passaggi scanzonati che i nostri mettono in certi ritornelli e in tanti passaggi, non vengono di certo a mancare qui in "Terra In Bocca", tuttavia è greve l'atmosfera che circonda l'opera. Numerosi cambi di tempo, vero e proprio disco Prog, esempio di cura e profondità sonora. Le voci narrano, specie quella inconfondibile e profonda di Papes, ma a differenza di molti altri dischi, qui meno frequente. La canzone d'autore comunque non esula dalle note, anzi, è il motore che trascina il macchinario, seppur ricolmo di strumentazioni atte al Prog del periodo. In allegato all’lp originale (oggi dal valore collezionistico di circa 120 Euro), come nella ristampa vinilica dell’Akarma, un poster da loro denominato “il più squallido dell'anno”. Tengo altresì a sottolineare l'importante lavoro agli arrangiamenti, punto di forza di questa band milanese. Un disco cantato, narrato, gridato, sussurrato, suonato e sudato, un lavoro forte dalle tematiche improponibili, la parola "Mafia" non si doveva pronunciare, per questo doppiamente massiccio. Ma accompagna I Giganti verso il termine della carriera, una fine ingiusta, assurda, schifosa, perché l'arte non va castrata. Eppure anche questa è una stupida storia tutta italiana... L'ennesima stupida storia.
Curiosamente nel 1989 la Vinyl Magic ristampa l'album in cd ma non nella versione originale, sembra che nelle loro mani sia capitata la versione demo del disco. Seppure ben inciso, la durata è differente e le voci si alternano in maniera differente, sia nel canto che nella narrazione. Persino i testi non sono uguali ed il suono sembra maggiormente acustico rispetto l'originale. La seconda ristampa del 1993 invece è quella giusta, come è giusta quella del 2000 da parte dell'Akarma.
Un disco che stra-consiglio e che non deve assolutamente mancare nella vostra discografia Prog e non, perché qui c'è molto da ascoltare. Per chi vuole approfondire l'argomento consiglio anche l'acquisto del bellissimo libro "Terra In Bocca - Quando I Giganti Sfidarono La Mafia" di Brunetto Salvarani e Odoardo Semellini per la casa editrice Il Margine - Orizzonti, con tanto di cd allegato! Grazie ai Giganti che, già trent'anni fa, nonostante il boicottaggio del disco e l'apparente sconfitta, alla mafia gliele hanno davvero cantate.

This disc is a source of pride for Italian music, but at the time of its release in 1971, it was mysteriously ignored by all media, both TV and radio. Why? I'll talk about it shortly. Meanwhile, I'd like to highlight the curious battle for the title of the first official Italian Prog disc among a few bands of the period, I Giganti, Le Orme, Osanna, Trip, and Rovescio della Medaglia, a battle that some critics say Le Orme won. I Giganti released this concept album (with a single theme) after a series of notable pop successes, from "Tema" to "Proposta (Mettete dei fiori nei vostri cannoni)", passing through "La Bomba Atomica", "Io E Il Presidente", and "Una Ragazza In Due". Festivals, TV appearances, radio broadcasts, and many concerts for the band composed of Giacomo "Mino" Di Martino (vocals and guitar), Francesco "Checco" Marsella (vocals, keyboards), Sergio Di Martino (vocals, bass, guitar), and Enrico Maria Papes (vocals and drums), so much deserved and enjoyed success. But with "Terra In Bocca", their last discographic realization, something happens that breaks the Giganti toy, not due to internal friction, as generally happens in a departure from the scene, but because of the topic addressed in the concept album: Mafia.
It talks about Sicily and water, coincidentally a topic still relevant today! TV appearances no longer arrive, and the radio only plays the disc once, or rather, the main theme of the album "Il Pescatore (Lungo e disteso ti hanno trovato)", then... nothing. Courage and what courage this is from I Giganti, daring both in music and themes. In truth, the band has never been predictable and ordinary, over time they have managed to be appreciated for their harmonies first and foremost, and then also for their themes always close to young people. Just looking at the cover, we get a punch to the stomach, this will become one of the strong points of its author, the one who lends his body lying on the floor, that Gianni Sassi who will make the Cramps record label a solid house for avant-garde bands, as well as the inspiring mind of Area. Frankenstein, this will be his future nickname, will enroll notable artists like Eugenio Finardi, Area, Bella Band, Arte e Mestieri, Alberto Camerini, and many others among the ranks of Cramps. A body lying down, with one shoe missing, a body with daisies in hand, caught off guard with blows to the chest and from the remaining shoe on the foot, the photo of I Giganti attached under the sole. The Sassi gene plants the seed. The lyrics are written by Piero De Rossi, because I Giganti love collaborating with various artists, not by chance, Ares Tavolazzi (Area), Ellade Bandini, Vince Tempera, Marcello Dellacasa, Gigi Rizzi, and Michelangelo La Bionda also cycle through the band.
Death and revenge, a farmer who refuses to buy water from the mafia at an exorbitant price per glass, but instead threatens to look for it in his own land and then give it away to everyone. Consequence of the death of his sixteen-year-old son, killed point-blank in retaliation by the mafia. Conclusion with private revenge, the farmer waits for the assassin at a crossroads to pay him back. Plot twist, while digging to bury the son, water is discovered!
The unmistakable scanzonated passages that our band puts in certain refrains and in many passages certainly don't lack here in "Terra In Bocca", however, the atmosphere surrounding the work is heavy. Numerous changes of time, a true Prog disc, an example of care and sound depth. The voices narrate, especially Papes' unmistakable and deep voice, but unlike many other discs, here it's less frequent. The author's song, however, does not exclude notes, on the contrary, it's the engine that drives the machinery, although full of instrumentation suitable for the Prog of the period. Attached to the original LP (today with a collector's value of around 120 Euros), as in the vinyl reissue by Akarma, a poster they call "the most squalid of the year". I also want to underline the important work on arrangements, a strong point of this Milanese band. A disc sung, narrated, shouted, whispered, played, and sweated, a strong work with unproposable themes, the word "Mafia" should not be pronounced, for this doubly massive. But it accompanies I Giganti towards the end of their career, an unjust, absurd, disgusting end, because art should not be castrated. And yet, this is another stupid Italian story... Another stupid story.
Curiously, in 1989 Vinyl Magic reissued the album on CD but not in the original version, it seems that the demo version of the disc fell into their hands. Although well recorded, the duration is different, and the voices alternate in a different way, both in singing and narration. Even the lyrics are not the same, and the sound seems more acoustic compared to the original. The second reissue of 1993, on the other hand, is the right one, just like the 2000 reissue by Akarma.
A disc that I strongly recommend and that should absolutely not be missing from your Prog discography and not only, because there's a lot to listen to here.
