Ci furono due anni, il 1994 e il 1995 in cui il mondo del Progressive Rock tornò ai massimi livelli proprio come negli anni ’70. Potrei fare una lista molto lunga al riguardo, Anekdoten, The Flower King, Landberk, Anglagard, Spock’s Beard , Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Arena, Iluvatar, Radiohead, Shadow Gallery, Queensryche, Pink Floyd, Savatage, Discipline, tutte band autrici di un relativo capolavoro personale. Tuttavia ce ne fu una che mi colpì particolarmente con l’album “As The World”, e fu l’americana Echolyn. Non a caso anche la Sony puntò su di loro facendogli intraprendere un nutrito tour live cavalcando l’onda del momentaneo successo Prog. Ebbene, questa band ha una caratteristica ben distinguibile, la tecnica strumentale sopraffina dei singoli musicisti e le coralità che molti accostarono nel tempo agli Yes.
La carriera è decennale, iniziata nell’autunno del 1989, e li porta a registrare nove album in studio.
Fra stop & go, li ritroviamo oggi dopo dieci anni dal buon “I Heard You Listening” con la formazione composta da Brett Kull (chitarra, voce solista, cori), Ray Weston (voce solista, basso, cori), Chris Buzby (tastiere, cori), e Jordan Perlson (batteria e percussioni, cori).
Mi chiedo come una band come gli Echolyn, dopo un album epocale come il nominato “As The World” non sia considerata nell’olimpo delle grandi. In realtà ogni album che realizzano è incensato dalla critica e dai fans della band, ma poi tutto torna nel dimenticatoio, proprio come il Prog che vive di alti e bassi. La chiave di lettura potrebbe essere che si adoperano in un limbo cosiddetto “terra di nessuno”, perché le composizioni si alternano fra lunghe suite (addirittura l’album “Mei” del 2002 è un pezzo unico di cinquanta minuti) e breve canzoni. Questo modo di operare può trovare fans e detrattori in entrambe i casi. 
Ultimamente gli Echolyn palesano anche affinità con i Beatles per certe armonie, per meglio dire una ricerca di armonie più massiccia.
Oggi siamo avanti ad un doppio lavoro autoprodotto che tende proprio a bypassare il problema descritto, un doppio album in cui gli stessi titoli fanno la spia, “Time Silent Radio VII” è formato da sette brevi canzoni, mentre “Time Silent Radio II” da due lunghe suite.
E inizio proprio da “Time Silent Radio VII” e dal brano “Radio Waves” in cui lo stile Echolyn è presente in forma melodica, diretta e ricca delle consuete coralità che li contraddistinguono. Molto orecchiabile e cantabile.
“Silent Years” ha un inizio crescente e tanta storia anni ’70 alle spalle. Qualcosa di maggiormente intimistico e ricercato giunge invece da “Cul-De-Sacs And Tunnels”, canzone per molti aspetti toccante, attenta ai cori e a quei movimenti cari a Moody Blues e Beatles su tutti. Nel proseguire il ritmo sale e lascia spazio a un godibilissimo duetto chitarra e piano.
Più Hard Prog grazie anche all’Hammond “Boulders On Hills”, qui come nel pezzo precedente, si narra degli alti e bassi della vita. Il discorso è analogo anche per “Our Brilliant Next” ricca di stili musicali differenti che mettono in evidenza la cultura musicale dei singoli componenti. Più ritmata e divertente “On We Blur”, facile da memorizzare con tastiere alla Supertramp. La chiusura è affidata alla positività di “Tiny Star”, canzone migliore di questo “Time Silent Radio VII” che probabilmente farà storcere il naso agli amanti della band primo periodo.
Per quello che concerne “Time Silent Radio II” il discorso è presto che fatto, “Time Has No Place” nei sedici minuti mette in evidenza tutte le caratteristiche storiche della band fra cambi umorali, tecnica e tanta ricercatezza in tutti i frangenti. Gli Echolyn salgono in cattedra e sanno come colpire quando vogliono e come vogliono. Ma la chicca finale è “Water In Our Hands”, con quasi trenta minuti di elevatissimo Crossover Prog, un esempio di come il genere sia sopravvissuto sino ai nostri giorni in buona salute.
Questo doppio lavoro strizza quindi l’occhio a entrambi i fans della band, ora sta a voi capire quale dei due è il migliore in base ai vostri gusti, resta il fatto che gli Echolyn sono un patrimonio mondiale per il genere, e spero che un giorno siano collocati nel posto in cui meritano, fra i grandi di tutti i tempi. There were two years, 1994 and 1995 in which the world of Progressive Rock returned to the highest levels just like in the 1970s. I could make a very long list in this regard, Anekdoten, The Flower King, Landberk, Anglagard, Spock's Beard , Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Arena, Iluvatar, Radiohead, Shadow Gallery, Queensryche, Pink Floyd, Savatage, Discipline, all bands authored a relative masterpiece of their own. However, there was one that particularly struck me with the album “As The World,” and that was the American Echolyn. Not coincidentally, Sony also bet on them by having them undertake a large live tour riding the wave of the momentary Prog success. Well, this band has a clearly distinguishable characteristic, the over-the-top instrumental technique of the individual musicians and the choruses that many likened in time to Yes.
They have a 10-year career, which began in the fall of 1989 and led them to record nine studio albums.
Between stop & go, we find them today ten years after the good “I Heard You Listening” with the lineup consisting of Brett Kull (guitar, lead vocals, backing vocals), Ray Weston (lead vocals, bass, backing vocals), Chris Buzby (keyboards, backing vocals), and Jordan Perlson (drums and percussion, backing vocals).
I wonder how a band like Echolyn, after an epochal album like the nominated “As The World” is not considered in the Olympus of the greats. In fact, every album they make is incensed by critics and fans of the band, but then it all goes back into oblivion, just like Prog, which experiences ups and downs. The key might be that they operate in a so-called “no man's land” limbo, because the compositions alternate between long suites (even the 2002 album “Mei” is a fifty-minute one-piece) and short songs. This mode of operation can find fans and detractors in both cases. 
Lately Echolyn have also been displaying affinities with the Beatles for certain harmonies, or rather a more massive search for harmonies.
Today we are ahead of a self-produced double work that tends precisely to bypass the described problem, a double album in which the titles themselves do the telling, “Time Silent Radio VII” consists of seven short songs, while “Time Silent Radio II” of two long suites.
And I begin precisely with “Time Silent Radio VII” and the track “Radio Waves” in which the Echolyn style is present in a melodic, straightforward form full of the usual choruses that distinguish them. Very catchy and singable.
“Silent Years” has a growing beginning and a lot of 70s history behind it. Something more intimate and searching comes instead from “Cul-De-Sacs And Tunnels”, a song in many ways touching, attentive to the choruses and those movements dear to Moody Blues and Beatles over all. In the continuation the tempo rises and gives way to a very enjoyable guitar and piano duet.
More Hard Prog thanks also to the Hammond “Boulders On Hills”, here, as in the previous piece, is about the ups and downs of life. The discourse is also similar for “Our Brilliant Next” full of different musical styles that highlight the musical culture of the individual members. More rhythmic and fun “On We Blur”, easy to memorize with Supertramp-esque keyboards. Closing is given to the positivity of “Tiny Star”, the best song on this “Time Silent Radio VII” that will probably turn the noses of fans of the band's early period.
As far as “Time Silent Radio II” is concerned, the speech is soon than done, “Time Has No Place” in the sixteen minutes highlights all the historical characteristics of the band between mood changes, technique and a lot of refinement in all the bangs. Echolyn take the stage and know how to strike when they want and how they want. But the final treat is “Water In Our Hands”, with almost thirty minutes of very high Crossover Prog, an example of how the genre has survived to this day in good health.
This double work therefore winks at both fans of the band, now it is up to you to figure out which one is the best according to your tastes, the fact remains that Echolyn are a world heritage for the genre, and I hope that one day they will be placed in the place they deserve, among the all-time greats.
