Malgrado la band americana di Louiseville sia in attività dal 1981, la discografia non è molto ricca, a dimostrazione di una ponderata scelta sonora. Infatti gli Ut Gret si lasciano trasportare dall'improvvisazione e dalle sonorità di molteplici strumenti e sono attenti a quello che può svilupparsi nel futuro. Sono sempre proiettati in avanti, sia nella scelta dei live, sempre differenti fra di loro, che nella composizione sonora, da qui la necessità di avere molti strumenti nella line up. "Time Of The Grets" è la testimonianza della scelta musicale, a cavallo fra Jazz improvvisato, Folk, e band come Magma, Henry Cow e Soft Machine su tutte. Come lascia intendere la dicitura di Ludwig Wittgenstein nel retro del cd, la musica proposta è chiaramente senza tempo, una situazione mutevole proiettata nel futuro. Tutto questo lascia presagire un viaggio virtuale di notevole enfasi emotiva, così la numerosa famiglia Ut Gret ci accompagna in questo percorso. Joee Conroy, Greg Goodman, David Stilley, Henry Kaiser, Gregory Acker, Eugene Chadbourne, Davey Williams, Misha Feigin e Murray Reams sono gli strumentisti.
I dieci minuti che aprono il cd dal titolo "Friend Of The Cow" (titolo tratto da un antico proverbio arabo che sta a significare "un amico è colui che ti riscalda"), mettono subito le carte in tavola. Chitarra acustica, flauto, violino, sax, tastiere, basso.... tanti strumenti che interagiscono in questa arte dell'insieme, dove anche le culture differenti si intersecano. Fughe impetuose che si rincorrono e si fermano per poi ripartire a loro volta, un saggio di intesa e preparazione da parte della band. Ottimo il brano jazz con chitarra acustica "Braxton & The Bird", impossibile restare fermi con i piedi all'ascolto, ritmo e tecnica progrediscono di pari passo.
Ho parlato molto di futuro in questa recensione e come lo intendono gli Ut Gret è prerogativa mettere sempre qualcosa di nuovo, creare un nuovo linguaggio. Ascoltare "Silly Hat Frontier" è come ascoltare un nuovo linguaggio! Una mini suite di quindici minuti dove gli strumenti parlano e non suonano, solo in alcuni frangenti comunicano con apparente armonia, una grammatica sonora dai vocaboli diversi. Aiutati da una ampia collezione di strumenti, gli artisti si lasciano andare in improvvisazioni comunque rette da un filo logico, quello della ricerca e dell'intesa. In parole povere totale libertà di espressione.
"Magma Futura" è più orchestrata e già dal titolo è chiaro che si riconducono alla band geniale dei Magma, anche se il canto di Misha Feigin qui è in russo anzi che in un linguaggio inventato come fa il maestro francese Christian Vander. Bello lo strumentale interno, nel quale lo spazio è sottolineato dagli effetti eco degli strumenti. A tratti vengono alla mente certe ricerche Pinkfloydiane dalle radici lontane.
"Time & Revolution" alza il tiro, in quasi 20 minuti riesce a raccontare tutto quanto spiegato sino ad ora. Un contenitore sonoro variegato e colmo di cultura, sia etnica che musicale. Chiude un breve brano fantasma con flauto e strumentazioni folcloristiche.
Non è semplice entrare nel mondo degli Ut Gret se non si è minimamente preparati a lasciarsi trasportare, ma quando questo accade, non ne sarà altrettanto facile uscirne. Intanto loro guardano avanti perché il punto focale della band è sempre quello: Che si può fare dopo? MS

Gli Ut Gret sono una band del Kentucky, precisamente di Louisville che si compone nell'oramai lontano 1981. Essi sono Steve Good al sax e percussioni, Gregory Acker al flauto, sax e percussioni, Gary Pahler batteria percussioni e basso, Stephen Roberts alle tastiere, vibrafono, tromba e percussioni ed il polistrumentista Joee Conroy (strumenti a corda, elettronica e percussioni).
Vengo subito a precisare che la musica proposta non è di facile collocazione, in essa convivono Folk, World, Rock, Jazz, ma soprattutto molta improvvisazione, grazie a strumenti quali sax, flauto, vibrafono, trombe ed altro ancora. Per questo mi sento di inserirli nel contesto Progressive Rio. Tutto questo fa presagire anche a composizioni lunghe ed articolate, spesso lanciate in corse improvvisate, in effetti così è.
Ut Gret è la fusione di due significati a se stanti, dove "UT" è l'antica nota medioevale conosciuta a noi come "do", la nota più bassa dell'organo, mentre "GRET" sta a significare un nomade, una persona zingara che vaga in Europa per cogliere nuove sonorità per la gente comune.
"Recent Fossils" si presenta con una bellissima confezione cartonata con tanto di libretto interno ricco di spiegazioni, citazioni letterarie e foto. Questo esce per i 25 anni di fondazione della band e nei suoi tre cd interni ascoltiamo tre stadi differenti della loro carriera. Il primo si intitola "The Dig" e nei suoi 70 minuti di sonorità possiamo davvero trovare ogni tipo di influenze sonore, musica percussionistica Indonesiana compresa. Le sensazioni che scaturiscono all'ascolto sono molteplici, si ha come la sensazione che la profondità della musica sia scavata nella terra. Musica atavica, dove si percepisce la necessità dell'uomo di comunicare con la natura.
Di conseguenza essendo una musica alquanto primitiva e spontanea, il ruolo delle percussioni è fondamentale, essendo esso lo strumento principe dai tempi dei tempi, è facile quindi avere una visione allegorica di una musica fossilizzata nella pietra, a testimonianza che la terra è suono e testimone di vita. Ma la terra porta anche ad una considerazione più spirituale, ecco dunque che questo carillon etnico trasporta l'anima e l'accompagna vicino al divino. Lo scenario bucolico che si presenta all'ascolto è ottenuto anche grazie all'uso dei fiati, fra sax e flauto per poi miscelare il Folk con la cultura Indonesiana. Chiudere gli occhi e lasciarsi trasportare dai suoni è come scendere giù da un lungo scivolo. Delicatezza e sensibilità.
Il secondo cd dal titolo "Time Laps" necessita di una mentalità ancora più aperta, in quanto esso è composto da improvvisazioni in studio. Compaiono anche ospiti illustri quali Henry Kaiser, Eugene Chadborne, Greg Goodman e Davey Williams. La Scuola di Canterbury viene inesorabilmente alla mente di chi ascolta, con i Soft Machine in cattedra. Jazz elettrico penetrante molto coinvolgente, un altro salto nel vuoto, un lasciarsi cadere nell'infinito dove le restrizioni mentali non devono assolutamente esistere. Vera musica per la mente, adatta ad un pubblico preparato e desideroso di lasciarsi sorprendere.
Ancora più difficile da affrontare è il terzo cd dal titolo "In C", brano in origine preparato come una bonus track, ma a causa della lunga performance di circa 63 minuti, relegato in un contesto a se stante. Questo è registrato dal vivo al Tewligan's Tavern con la presenza di altri strumentisti, quali lo storico Dave Stilley e Marko Novachoff. Un brano martellante ed ipnotico che mette a dura prova la pazienza dell'ascoltatore. Una sorta di extasy sonora, dove la ragione si lascia ingannare dalle apparenze, quelle costruite dalle note degli artisti.
Gli Ut Gret non sono mai banali, raccontano viaggi, ripercorrono il dna dell'uomo anche a ritroso, per poi riproporlo a noi in maniera schietta e cruda. Meritano l'ascolto. MS

Sorpresa Ut Gret! Sono serviti trent'anni e dieci di preparazione per trovare un equilibrio sonoro davvero invidiabile, finalmente l'esperienza sperimentale del passato, viene messa al servizio delle composizioni e non viceversa come accaduto sino ad oggi. Il filo conduttore di "Radical Symmetry" è ancora una volta la ricerca sonora, ma questa volta la formula canzone è quasi sempre rispettata e gode di melodie eccellenti. Ritorna pure un artwork importante, ricco di nozioni e concetti, in più il disco suddiviso in undici tracce, gode anche di una buona produzione sonora.
Si comincia con un breve saggio strumentale di matrice Jazz e dal suono Canterburiano con "Insect Probe".Successivamente troviamo anche una voce femminile, quella soave di Dane Waters ed è nel pezzo dal titolo "Souvenir City". Il suono diventa morbido ed i strumenti a fiato sono sempre presenti e fondamentali. Certe sonorità mi fanno venire alla mente anche band italiane degli anni '70 come i Perigeo. Trascinante il solo di sax. Le vecchie radici della band vengono fuori nell'unico brano di durata più longeva, "Infinite Regress", con i suoi sedici minuti abbondanti. Qui fanno sfoggio le vecchie sperimentazioni, un ritorno al linguaggio musicale inteso come nuova lingua. Un ritorno al passato o una fuga verso il futuro? Intanto la musica suonata è resa materia dai balli di Ruric Amari, qui visionabile soltanto attraverso le foto del booklet. Questa è musica multietnica, rivolta alle culture orientali in chiave di lettura Ut Gret. La band si apre al mondo Prog, ospitando nel proprio sound influenze quali King Crimson, Henry Cow con uno sguardo anche al geniale Frank Zappa. L'Oriente si manifesta in tutta la sua magia onirica in "For Viswa".
"Walk In The Garden" ha il profumo degli anni '70, quella purezza e se vogliamo ingenuità sincera che rivestiva quel clamoroso periodo della storia umana, dove l'individuo era al centro dell'attenzione e non viceversa come oggi. Flauto dolce e melodie toccanti.
"Cobra In Basket" torna a raccontare l'oriente, mentre "Rule IIO"rovista nelle melodie calde del Jazz. Ma i brani ricercati non sono terminati nella suite, "Sword Of Damocles" torna a percorrere limbi psichedelici dove la voce di Dane Waters fa il suo ritorno. Il disco è concluso dai sei minuti Jazz di "Vegetable Matters", quasi un classico rispetto alla complessa discografia della band di Louisville.
Dal baco Ut Gret nasce oggi questa farfalla colorata, una maturazione inesorabile, questa avviene quando gli artisti che suonano vivono la musica per come è, senza restrizioni esterne. Gli Ut Gret sono una realtà profonda ed articolata, magari non facile per tutti gli orecchi, ma di certo colma di culture e sonorità. Consigliatissimo. MS

Despite the American band from Louisville being active since 1981, their discography is not very extensive, demonstrating a thoughtful approach to sound. The Ut Gret allow themselves to be carried away by improvisation and the sounds of multiple instruments, always attentive to what can develop in the future. They are always looking forward, both in their live performances, which are always different, and in their sonic compositions. This explains the need for many instruments in their lineup. "Time Of The Gret" is a testament to their musical choice, straddling free jazz, folk, and bands like Magma, Henry Cow, and Soft Machine. As the Ludwig Wittgenstein quote on the back of the CD suggests, the music presented is clearly timeless, a changing situation projected into the future. This promises a virtual journey of considerable emotional emphasis, and the numerous Ut Gret family members accompany us on this journey. The instrumentalists include Joee Conroy, Greg Goodman, David Stilley, Henry Kaiser, Gregory Acker, Eugene Chadbourne, Davey Williams, Misha Feigin, and Murray Reams.
The 10-minute opening track, "Friend Of The Cow" (titled after an ancient Arabic proverb meaning "a friend is one who warms you"), immediately sets the tone. Acoustic guitar, flute, violin, sax, keyboards, bass... many instruments interact in this ensemble art, where different cultures also intersect. Impetuous fugues that chase each other and stop only to restart, a testament to the band's understanding and preparation. The jazz track "Braxton & The Bird" is excellent, with acoustic guitar; it's impossible to sit still while listening, as rhythm and technique progress hand in hand.
I've spoken a lot about the future in this review, and as the Ut Gret intend it, it's a prerogative to always introduce something new, create a new language. Listening to "Silly Hat Frontier" is like hearing a new language! A 15-minute mini-suite where instruments speak rather than play, only occasionally communicating with apparent harmony, a sonic grammar with diverse vocabularies. Aided by a vast collection of instruments, the artists indulge in improvisations guided by a logical thread of research and understanding. In simple terms, total freedom of expression.
"Magma Futura" is more orchestrated, and the title clearly references the genius band Magma, although Misha Feigin's singing is in Russian rather than the invented language used by Christian Vander. The internal instrumental track is beautiful, with space emphasized by echo effects. At times, it brings to mind certain Pink Floyd explorations with deep roots.
"Time & Revolution" raises the stakes, managing to convey everything explained so far in nearly 20 minutes. It's a varied sonic container full of culture, both ethnic and musical. The album concludes with a brief, ghostly track featuring flute and folkloric instrumentation.
It's not easy to enter the world of Ut Gret without being prepared to let go, but once you do, it's just as hard to leave. Meanwhile, they look forward, as their focal point is always: What can be done next? MS

The Ut Gret are a band from Kentucky, specifically from Louisville, formed in 1981. They consist of Steve Good on sax and percussion, Gregory Acker on flute, sax, and percussion, Gary Pahler on drums, percussion, and bass, Stephen Roberts on keyboards, vibraphone, trumpet, and percussion, and the multi-instrumentalist Joee Conroy (string instruments, electronics, and percussion).
I want to clarify that the music presented is not easily categorized; it combines folk, world, rock, jazz, and, above all, a lot of improvisation, thanks to instruments like sax, flute, vibraphone, trumpet, and more. For this reason, I feel inclined to place them in the Progressive Rio context. This also suggests long and complex compositions, often launched into improvised journeys, which is indeed the case.
Ut Gret is a fusion of two standalone meanings, where "UT" is the ancient medieval note known to us as "C", the lowest note of the organ, and "GRET" means a nomad, a gypsy person who wanders Europe to gather new sounds for the common people.
"Recent Fossils" comes in a beautiful hardcover package with an internal booklet rich in explanations, literary quotes, and photos. Released to commemorate the band's 25th anniversary, the three internal CDs feature three different stages of their career. The first CD, titled "The Dig", spans 70 minutes of soundscapes where you can truly find every type of sonic influence, including Indonesian percussion music. The sensations that arise from listening are multiple; it feels like the depth of the music is dug into the earth. It's atavistic music where one perceives the need for humans to communicate with nature.
Given that this music is quite primitive and spontaneous, the role of percussion is fundamental, being the principal instrument since ancient times. It's easy to have an allegorical vision of music fossilized in stone, testifying that the earth is sound and a witness to life. But the earth also leads to a more spiritual consideration; this ethnic carillon transports the soul and accompanies it near the divine. The bucolic scenario presented upon listening is also achieved through the use of winds, between sax and flute, mixing folk with Indonesian culture. Closing your eyes and letting the sounds carry you away is like sliding down a long slide. Delicacy and sensitivity.
The second CD, titled "Time Laps", requires an even more open mindset, as it consists of studio improvisations. There are also notable guests like Henry Kaiser, Eugene Chadborne, Greg Goodman, and Davey Williams. The Canterbury School inevitably comes to mind for listeners, with Soft Machine at the helm. Penetrating electric jazz is very engaging, another leap into the void, letting oneself fall into the infinite where mental restrictions should not exist. True music for the mind, suitable for a prepared audience eager to be surprised.
Even more challenging is the third CD, titled "In C", originally prepared as a bonus track but relegated to its own context due to its long performance of about 63 minutes. This was recorded live at Tewligan's Tavern with additional instrumentalists like the legendary Dave Stilley and Marko Novachoff. It's a pounding and hypnotic track that puts the listener's patience to the test. A kind of sonic ecstasy where reason is fooled by appearances constructed from the artists' notes.
The Ut Gret are never banal; they narrate journeys, retrace human DNA even backward, and then present it to us in a straightforward and raw manner. They are worth listening to. MS

Ut Gret surprise! It took thirty years and ten years of preparation to find a truly enviable sonic balance. Finally, the experimental experience of the past is put to the service of compositions, rather than the other way around, as it has been until now. The common thread of "Radical Symmetry" is still sonic research, but this time the song formula is almost always respected and features excellent melodies. There's also an important artwork, rich in notions and concepts, and the disc, divided into eleven tracks, also enjoys good sound production.
It starts with a brief instrumental essay in the Jazz and Canterbury sound style with "Insect Probe". Next, we find a female voice, the soothing one of Dane Waters, in the piece titled "Souvenir City". The sound becomes soft, and wind instruments are always present and fundamental. Certain sonorities remind me of Italian bands from the 1970s, like Perigeo. The transcendent sax solo. The band's old roots emerge in the only longer track, "Infinite Regress", with its over 16 minutes. Here, they showcase their old experimentalism, a return to musical language as a new language. A return to the past or a leap into the future? Meanwhile, the music played is made tangible by Ruric Amari's dances, visible only through the booklet photos. This is multi-ethnic music, aimed at Eastern cultures in the Ut Gret reading key. The band opens up to the Prog world, hosting influences like King Crimson, Henry Cow, with a glance at the genius Frank Zappa. The East manifests in all its dreamy magic in "For Viswa".
"Walk In The Garden" has the scent of the 1970s, that purity and, if you will, sincere naivety that characterized that remarkable period in human history, where the individual was at the center of attention, not the other way around as today. Sweet flute and touching melodies.
"Cobra In Basket" tells the story of the East, while "Rule II" is rooted in the warm melodies of Jazz. But the sought-after tracks haven't ended with the suite; "Sword Of Damocles" ventures into psychedelic realms where Dane Waters' voice returns. The disc concludes with the six-minute Jazz track "Vegetable Matters", almost a classic compared to the complex discography of the Louisville band.
From the cocoon of Ut Gret, this colorful butterfly is born today, an inexorable maturation that occurs when the artists who play live music for what it is, without external restrictions. Ut Gret is a profound and articulated reality, perhaps not easy for all ears, but certainly full of cultures and sonorities. Highly recommended. MS
