La band del chitarrista svedese ex Kaipa, Roine Stolt, ha segnato non soltanto un’epoca nel Progressive Rock più vintage, ma ha indicato un nuovo percorso, alternando nel tempo album che hanno di fondo un rispetto per il passato con la giunta di nuove sonorità e lo stile inconfondibile della chitarra elettrica.
Punto di riferimento, soprattutto negli anni ’90, i The Flower Kings rilasciano lavori molto lunghi, spesso doppi cd e lunghe suite, tanto da arrivare oggi al loro diciassettesimo capitolo in studio intitolato “Love”.
La band di Uppsala mantiene lo scheletro storico con Hasse Fröberg (voce), e Michael Stolt (basso, voce), oggi completato con Lalle Larsson (tastiere), e Mirko DeMaio (batteria).
Non mancano neppure gli special guest, che rispondono ai nomi di Hasse Bruniusson (percussioni), Jannica Lund (voce), Aliaksandr Yasinski (fisarmonica), e Jacob Collier (cori).
Credo quindi che per chi ami questo genere, i The Flower Kings non abbiano bisogno di presentazioni, tuttavia qui mi rivolgo a coloro che non li dovessero conoscere, consigliando l’ascolto di “Stardust We Are” (Foxtrot Records / Inside Out – 1997) per entrare a pieno titolo nelle loro atmosfere.
Oggi prendono un poco le distanze da quello che è sempre stato il loro punto di vista riguardo ai brani, generalmente molto vicini agli anni ’70 e di una durata decisamente corposa. In “Love” c’è un approccio maggiormente Pop, pur restando nel loro stile sempre molto tecnico e raffinato.
Le melodie qui scelte sono di un’efficacia convincente, così l’uso dei testi mai banale. Si tratta dell’uomo e della sua incapacità di imparare dai propri errori, della fragilità in senso generale, dove l’unica via di salvezza risiede nel guardarsi dentro e vivere con obbiettività.
Tutto ciò è narrato nei dodici brani che compongono l’album, a iniziare da “We Claim The Moon”, dove s’intuisce immediatamente la rinnovata vena creativa.
Probabilmente l’esperienza con la super-band Transatlantic di Neal Morse (ex Spock’s Beard), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), e Pete Trewavas (Marillion), ha lasciato in Stolt un segno tangibile, convincendo l’artista a smussare alcuni lati del suo sound rendendolo più fresco e diretto.
“The Elder” è una mini suite di undici minuti, ammaliante, dolce, stracolma di suoni, cambi umorali e un senso per la musicalità altamente spiccato, come loro e pochi altri hanno saputo fare nel tempo. Lo so, sembrano banalità queste che sto dicendo, ma non può essere minimamente differente dalla realtà dei fatti.
Una loro prerogativa sonora è la cura per i particolari, la si incontra molto spesso, in fondo quando si ha a che fare con musicisti navigati è quasi inevitabile. “How Can You Leave Us Now?” è il singolo dal quale è estratto anche il video, il pezzo scorre piacevolmente ed è sunto di quanto sino ad ora descritto. Per me impossibile trovare un brano migliore di un altro, a testimonianza di una invidiabile continuità d’intento, per questo lascio liberamente a voi il piacere d’immergervi in questo calderone sonoro senza tempo.
L’ottima qualità della produzione e un artwork ben confezionato, fanno di “Love” un disco assolutamente professionale che mi sento di consigliare assolutamente a tutti coloro che amano la musica in senso generale. Sorprendenti i The Flower Kings! MS

The band, led by Swedish guitarist Roine Stolt, formerly of Kaipa, has not only marked an era in vintage Progressive Rock but has also indicated a new path, alternating between albums that respect the past while introducing new sonorities and the unmistakable style of electric guitar.
A point of reference, especially in the 1990s, The Flower Kings release very long works, often double CDs and long suites, and have now reached their 17th studio chapter, titled "Love".
The Uppsala band maintains its historical skeleton with Hasse Fröberg (vocals), and Michael Stolt (bass, vocals), now completed with Lalle Larsson (keyboards), and Mirko DeMaio (drums).
There are also special guests, including Hasse Bruniusson (percussion), Jannica Lund (vocals), Aliaksandr Yasinski (accordion), and Jacob Collier (backing vocals).
I believe that for fans of this genre, The Flower Kings don't need an introduction, but for those who don't know them, I recommend listening to "Stardust We Are" (Foxtrot Records / Inside Out – 1997) to fully enter their atmospheres.
Today, they take a slightly different approach from their usual perspective on songs, which are generally very close to the 1970s and quite lengthy. In "Love", there's a more Pop-oriented approach, while still maintaining their technical and refined style.
The chosen melodies are convincingly effective, and the use of lyrics is never banal. The album deals with humanity's inability to learn from its mistakes, fragility in general, and the only way to salvation lies in looking inside and living with objectivity.
All this is narrated in the 12 tracks that make up the album, starting with "We Claim The Moon", where the renewed creative vein is immediately apparent.
Probably, the experience with the super-band Transatlantic, featuring Neal Morse (ex Spock's Beard), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), and Pete Trewavas (Marillion), has left a tangible mark on Stolt, convincing him to smooth out some aspects of his sound, making it fresher and more direct.
"The Elder" is an 11-minute mini-suite, enchanting, sweet, and full of sounds, mood changes, and a highly developed sense of musicality, as only they and a few others have been able to do over time. I know it sounds like a cliché, but it can't be any different from the reality of the facts.
One of their sonic prerogatives is attention to detail, which is often encountered when dealing with seasoned musicians. "How Can You Leave Us Now?" is the single from which the video is extracted, and the song flows pleasantly, summarizing what I've described so far. For me, it's impossible to find a better song than another, testifying to an enviable continuity of intent, so I leave it up to you to enjoy immersing yourself in this timeless sonic cauldron.
The excellent production quality and well-crafted artwork make "Love" an absolutely professional record that I highly recommend to anyone who loves music in general. The Flower Kings are surprising! MS
