Esistono generi musicali che nel tempo si evolvono in maniera veloce, in base anche alle mode e alle tecnologie del momento, e altri che sembrano non curarsi di ciò che accade attorno. Non è questione d’immobilismo o presunzione, semplicemente sono così, perfettamente incastonati in un contesto coerente nei confronti del proprio essere. Potrei citare il Reggae, il Liscio, l’Hard Rock, il Power Metal e altri ancora. Fra questi ci sono il Melodic Rock e l’AOR.
Questo stile sonoro è dedito a un sound molto orecchiabile, in bilico fra Rock e Hard Rock, dove le melodie accattivanti sprigionano energia pulita e positiva. L’America ha saputo insegnare al mondo come si fa attraverso l’uso massiccio di tastiere, e anche l’Europa ha dato il suo bel contributo, ma l’Italia?
Noi, come in tutte le realizzazioni artistiche che ci prefiggiamo, riusciamo a farci valere grazie alla mediterraneità che ci contraddistingue, e lo facciamo sempre con amore e rispetto.
Esiste nel nostro paese un’etichetta discografica portabandiera di questi intenti, la Burning Minds Music Group, sempre attenta alla nascita di fenomeni al riguardo.
Oggi ci propone una succulenta compilation di band più o meno storiche, e lo fa rispolverando un progetto pubblicato nel 2016 da Tanzan Music intitolato "We Still Rock - The Compilation". Esso ebbe un buon successo, piazzandosi in Svizzera al numero 92 nelle classifiche digitali.
Il titolo odierno è “We Still Rock… The World” e così descrivono le note di accompagnamento al disco: “Il nuovo capitolo è una raccolta di materiale ricercato dagli appassionati di Rock Melodico, con brani inediti e versioni alternative di brani noti di diversi stimati artisti del Rock Melodico italiano. Per la prima volta in formato fisico, la versione CD include anche diversi brani, precedentemente disponibili solo sulle piattaforme digitali.”.
Andiamo dunque a vedere chi suona all’interno: Soul Seller, Room Experience, StreetLore, Mindfeels, Firesky e Night Pleasure Hotel, che fanno già parte del roster di Art Of Melody Music. A loro si uniscono progetti internazionali come Kastadian, No Limits, Füel For Tunes, Broken Carillon e Laneslide. Il tutto è impreziosito dalla presenza di notevoli musicisti come Toby Hitchcock (Kastadian), Robbie LaBlanc e Stefano Lionetti (No Limits), Frank Vestry, Erik Martensson, Bruce Gaitsch, Michael Bormann e Bruno Kraler (Laneslide), Gianluca Firmo (Broken Carillon) e Alessandro Del Vecchio e Pierpaolo "Zorro" Monti (Füel For Tunes).
Diciassette le canzoni contenute, e sono i No Limits ad aprire le danze con il brano “Ride Or Die”. La voce di Robbie LaBlanc ci trasporta direttamente negli anni ’80 grazie anche al supporto delle tastiere di Stefano Lionetti. Il ritornello è il punto di forza come il genere si prefigge, con tanto di coralità a rimorchio.
I Kastadian in "Message In The Night" si avvalgono della grande voce di Toby Hitchcock, mentre la band è formata da Marcello Spera (cori), Dave Zublena (chitarra ritmica), Andrew Trabelsi (chitarra), Alexandros Muscio (tastiere), Stefania Sarre (basso), e Italo Graziana (batteria). Questa musica nasce non soltanto per essere ascoltata magari per compagnia durante un bel viaggio in strada, ma soprattutto per essere cantata.
I Soul Seller propongono la versione rimasterizzata di ”Diamonds Rain”, una canzone adrenalinica, dove le chitarre di Dave Zublena e Dale Sanders si adoperano sopra un mid tempo dettato dalla ritmica formata ancora una volta da Stefania Sarre (basso), e Italo Graziana (batteria). Il pezzo risulta essere maggiormente articolato rispetto alla media del genere, con buoni assolo di chitarra, la voce di Eric Concas, e un pregevole lavoro alle tastiere da parte di Alessandro “Wallino” Rimoldi.
Gli Shining Line nel brano inedito “I'm Alive” ci presentano voci femminili al microfono, quelle di Lexyia e Antonella Baruffaldi. Intenso e intimistico “I'm Alive” è una buona vetrina per le loro doti canore.
E’ poi la volta dei Füel For Tunes con “Kings Of The Underground”, altra canzone inedita di questa raccolta con Alessandro Del Vecchio alla voce, Andrew Trabelsi alla chitarra e tastiere, Remo Ferrari al basso e Luca Ferraresi alla batteria. Ruggente e determinata, riesce a coinvolgere l’ascoltatore a dovere grazie soprattutto ai cori accalappianti che sicuramente faranno la loro porca figura in sede live.
I Maryan sono qui presenti con due brani, “Like A Dragonfly” e “Turn Of The Tide”. Maryan è il nome della cantante della band. Buone le sue doti canore, ma anche i pezzi ben si adeguano alle sue caratteristiche.
Un altro brano inedito lo propongono i Firesky con “To Be The Number One”. Davide Merletto (voce), Saal Richmond (tastiere, cori), Samuli Federley (chitarra, cori), Time Schleifer (basso), e Mika Brushane (batteria, cori), si dimostrano una buona macchina da guerra dedita in tutto e per tutto a rispettare i canoni del genere.
I Night Pleasure Hotel del polistrumentista Alex Mari ci presentano “Sick Love”, canzone bene arrangiata e ovviamente accattivante. Un ulteriore bella realtà sono i Mindfeels di Davide Gilardino (voce), Luca Carlomagno (chitarra, tastiere), Roberto Barazzotto (basso), e Italo Graziana (batteria) che in “All Behind” dimostrano di avere nel proprio bagaglio culturale tutte le carte in regola per poter emozionare l’ascoltatore attraverso una composizione ben strutturata e impreziosita da un buon assolo di chitarra.
I Room Experience propongono la versione alternativa di “A Thousand Lies”, e sono formati da Gianluca Firmo (voce, tastiere), Davide "Dave Rox" Barbieri (tastiere, cori), Steve De Biasi (chitarra), Simon Dredo (basso), e Pierpaolo "Zorro" Monti (batteria). La canzone oltre che risultare gradevole è solare nell’incedere.
I Broken Carillon di Rebecca Bravo (voce), Nicola Mafessanti (chitarra, basso, cori), Gianluca Firmo (tastiere), e Marco Palazzini (basso), propongono “Before That Night”, aperta da un piano delicato e sognante. L’Hard Rock melodico si presenta successivamente in tutto il suo splendore grazie all’immancabile inciso trascinante. La band più presente in questa compilation ha il nome di Laneslide, qui rappresentata da ben tre brani di cui due demo, “Strangers In Town”, e “Old School Hero", e l’inedita “Cowboys Once, Cowboys Forever”, una bella ballata con Bruce Gaitsch alla chitarra acustica.
Concludono i StreetLore  con la versione acustica di “Aeglos” e l’orchestrata “Brothers”. Band dalla forte personalità.
Se quindi volete avere un idea di quello che è l’Hard Rock Melodico oggi in Italia, questa raccolta fa proprio al caso vostro, e c’è di che assorbire energia per affrontare la dura e noiosa quotidianità. MS

There are music genres that evolve quickly over time, adapting to trends and technology, and others that seem unaffected by what’s happening around them. It’s not about being static or arrogant—they simply are what they are, perfectly embedded in a consistent identity. Genres like Reggae, Ballroom Dance (Liscio), Hard Rock, Power Metal, and others fit this description. Among them are Melodic Rock and AOR.
This musical style is known for its catchy sound, sitting between Rock and Hard Rock, where compelling melodies release clean and positive energy. The United States taught the world how to do it, especially through the extensive use of keyboards. Europe also made a strong contribution. But what about Italy?
As with all forms of artistic expression we set our minds to, we Italians manage to stand out thanks to the Mediterranean touch that defines us—and we always do it with love and respect.
In our country, there is a label that embodies these values: Burning Minds Music Group, always attentive to emerging talent in this scene.
Now, they bring us a tasty compilation of bands, some historical and some newer, by reviving a project first released in 2016 by Tanzan Music titled We Still Rock – The Compilation. It was quite successful, even reaching number 92 in Switzerland’s digital charts.
The new edition is titled We Still Rock… The World, and here’s how the album notes describe it:
“This new chapter is a collection of sought-after material for Melodic Rock fans, featuring unreleased tracks and alternate versions of well-known songs by respected Italian Melodic Rock artists. For the first time in physical format, the CD version also includes several songs previously available only on digital platforms.”
So, who’s playing on this release? We find Soul Seller, Room Experience, StreetLore, Mindfeels, Firesky, and Night Pleasure Hotel, all part of the Art Of Melody Music roster. They’re joined by international projects such as Kastadian, No Limits, Füel For Tunes, Broken Carillon, and Laneslide. The lineup is enriched by notable musicians like Toby Hitchcock (Kastadian), Robbie LaBlanc and Stefano Lionetti (No Limits), Frank Vestry, Erik Martensson, Bruce Gaitsch, Michael Bormann, Bruno Kraler (Laneslide), Gianluca Firmo (Broken Carillon), and Alessandro Del Vecchio and Pierpaolo "Zorro" Monti (Füel For Tunes).
There are 17 tracks in total, and No Limits kick things off with “Ride Or Die.” Robbie LaBlanc’s vocals immediately transport us back to the 1980s, enhanced by Stefano Lionetti’s keyboards. As expected in this genre, the chorus is the strong point, complete with big backing vocals.
Kastadian follow with “Message In The Night,” featuring the powerful voice of Toby Hitchcock. The band includes Marcello Spera (backing vocals), Dave Zublena (rhythm guitar), Andrew Trabelsi (guitar), Alexandros Muscio (keyboards), Stefania Sarre (bass), and Italo Graziana (drums). This is music made not just to accompany a road trip—it’s meant to be sung along with.
Soul Seller offer a remastered version of “Diamonds Rain,” an adrenaline-fueled track where guitarists Dave Zublena and Dale Sanders shine over a mid-tempo beat held down by Stefania Sarre (bass) and Italo Graziana (drums). The piece is more complex than average for the genre, with strong guitar solos, Eric Concas on vocals, and fine keyboard work by Alessandro “Wallino” Rimoldi.
 
Shining Line bring a new song, “I'm Alive,” showcasing female vocals by Lexyia and Antonella Baruffaldi. It’s an intense and intimate track that highlights their vocal abilities.
Next up are Füel For Tunes with another new song, “Kings Of The Underground,” featuring Alessandro Del Vecchio (vocals), Andrew Trabelsi (guitar/keyboards), Remo Ferrari (bass), and Luca Ferraresi (drums). The track is bold and engaging, driven by catchy choruses that are sure to make a strong impression live.
Maryan appear with two songs: “Like A Dragonfly” and “Turn Of The Tide.” Maryan is the band’s vocalist, and her singing fits the well-crafted tracks perfectly.
Firesky present another unreleased song, “To Be The Number One,” with Davide Merletto (vocals), Saal Richmond (keyboards/backing vocals), Samuli Federley (guitar/backing vocals), Time Schleifer (bass), and Mika Brushane (drums/backing vocals). They prove to be a solid force, fully committed to the melodic rock ethos.
Night Pleasure Hotel, led by multi-instrumentalist Alex Mari, offer “Sick Love,” a well-arranged and undeniably catchy track. Mindfeels, featuring Davide Gilardino (vocals), Luca Carlomagno (guitar/keyboards), Roberto Barazzotto (bass), and Italo Graziana (drums), shine with “All Behind,” a song that reveals the band’s emotional depth, well-structured composition, and a standout guitar solo.
Room Experience contribute an alternate version of “A Thousand Lies,” featuring Gianluca Firmo (vocals/keyboards), Davide “Dave Rox” Barbieri (keyboards/backing vocals), Steve De Biasi (guitar), Simon Dredo (bass), and Pierpaolo “Zorro” Monti (drums). The track is both enjoyable and uplifting.
Broken Carillon, with Rebecca Bravo (vocals), Nicola Mafessanti (guitar/bass/backing vocals), Gianluca Firmo (keyboards), and Marco Palazzini (bass), deliver “Before That Night,” which opens with a dreamy, delicate piano. Melodic Hard Rock soon bursts forth in full splendor with a driving, infectious chorus.
The most featured band on the compilation is Laneslide, appearing with three tracks: two demos (“Strangers In Town” and “Old School Hero”) and a previously unreleased ballad, “Cowboys Once, Cowboys Forever,” featuring Bruce Gaitsch on acoustic guitar.
The compilation closes with StreetLore, offering an acoustic version of “Aeglos” and the orchestrated “Brothers.” A band with strong character.
So if you want to get a taste of what Melodic Hard Rock sounds like in Italy today, this compilation is just right for you—and it provides plenty of energy to face the dull grind of everyday life.
