Di realizzazioni strane nel mondo del Rock Progressivo ce ne sono davvero tante, alcune più riuscite e altre meno; ciò che colpisce è la volontà ancora oggi di voler esprimersi in maniera personale e unica, ricercando nuove soluzioni. Anche il mondo del Folk non è escluso da questo percorso, sebbene il genere in questione, rispetto al Rock, risulti relegato a stilemi poco modificabili e ben riconoscibili.
L'Inghilterra è sempre stata una nazione con grandi band dalla fortissima personalità, spesso punto di riferimento per altre nel mondo, e non si ferma neppure nel contesto Folk con band come gli Spriggan Mist. Sono una band pagana di Bracknell, formata dai coniugi Baz e Maxine Cilia nel 2008, e autrice di cinque album in studio.
Spriggan è una creatura mitologica brutta e malvagia del folklore fatato della Cornovaglia, e queste tematiche vengono ben trattate nei concerti dal vivo attraverso interpretazioni piuttosto teatrali, impreziosite da costumi pagani e dal team Jadoo-Tribal Dance, con riferimenti a Hawkwind e Arthur Brown. Oggi gli Spriggan Mist sono composti da Fay Brotherhood (voce solista, chitarra acustica), Maxine Cilia (chitarre, sassofoni, legni, cori), Baz Cilia (basso, voce solista, cori), Neil Wighton (chitarre) e Ali Soueidan (batteria).
"The Glare" è il settimo album della loro carriera (il sesto non è specificato, forse si intende il sesto album in studio, ma gli autori citano 5 album, quindi potrebbe essere il settimo lavoro complessivo, incluso questo), ed è composto di sette canzoni, a partire dall'intro "The Gaze Of The Dragon".
L'interpretazione vocale di Fay Brotherhood qui è altamente interpretativa e perfettamente inserita in scenari mistici, oltre a essere nitida e possente, con quel vibrato che aggiunge valore all'insieme. Per esperienza personale, dico anche che ci sono alcuni punti di congiunzione con il Neo Prog di Clive Nolan.
"Ianatores Teresteres" è molto rock; le chitarre elettriche apportano un sound greve che va a incastrarsi con le scelte armoniche della voce e con un ritornello accalappiante. Il fattore Prog deriva dal cambio umorale centrale, in cui le chitarre si esprimono al meglio in un assolo dall'ampio respiro, e ancora una volta vicino al Neo Prog.
"Pieces Of Glass" ricerca maggiormente nell'ambito del Folk, grazie all'utilizzo di strumentazioni antiche e all'incedere ritmico martellante. Bello il movimento melodico tipicamente britannico, che ricorda in qualche modo anche materiale degli Imaginaerium di Laura Piazzai e Clive Nolan. Interventi elettrici vigorosi delle chitarre sono una sorpresa nel contesto. Ma è in "Faery Wood" che le atmosfere coinvolgono l'ascoltatore in un mondo fatto di boschi e fate. Il ritmo si placa, e subentrano strumenti a fiato che ricordano il whistle.
I sette minuti di "Crystal Caves" sono ammalianti, ancora una volta per merito della voce, ma anche per i cambi di tempo. Bellissimo il finale strumentale.
In "The Cult" si rispetta maggiormente la formula canzone, anche se non mancano di certo i frangenti Progressive Folk. La chiusura è affidata a "When Stars Collide", brano più lungo dell'album, dove si mettono sul tavolo tutte le caratteristiche descritte sino ad ora.
"The Glare" è un album scorrevole, piacevole, impegnato in un Rock Folk elettrico, ma anche rispettoso del passato, dove gli artisti stessi sembrano divertirsi molto nel suonare; e si sa che nell'ascolto tutto ciò è contagioso. Il disco esce il 2 novembre 2025. MS

There are many strange achievements in the world of Progressive Rock, some more successful than others; what strikes us is the will to express oneself in a personal and unique way, seeking new solutions. The world of Folk is no exception to this path, although the genre in question, compared to Rock, seems to be confined to little-modifiable and recognizable stylistic features.
England has always been a nation with great bands with a strong personality, often a reference point for others around the world, and it doesn't stop even in the Folk context with bands like Spriggan Mist. They are a pagan band from Bracknell, formed by the married couple Baz and Maxine Cilia in 2008, and authors of five studio albums.
Spriggan is a mythological creature, ugly and evil, from Cornish fairy folklore, and these themes are well-handled in live concerts through rather theatrical interpretations, embellished with pagan costumes and the Jadoo-Tribal Dance team, with references to Hawkwind and Arthur Brown. Today, Spriggan Mist consists of Fay Brotherhood (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Maxine Cilia (guitars, saxophones, woodwinds, backing vocals), Baz Cilia (bass, lead vocals, backing vocals), Neil Wighton (guitars), and Ali Soueidan (drums).
"The Glare" is the seventh album of their career (perhaps it's the seventh overall work, including this one, since the authors mention 5 albums), and it's composed of seven songs, starting with the intro "The Gaze Of The Dragon".
Fay Brotherhood's vocal interpretation is highly interpretive and perfectly inserted into mystical scenarios, as well as being clear and powerful, with a vibrato that adds value to the whole. From personal experience, I also note that there are some points of connection with Clive Nolan's Neo Prog.
"Ianatores Teresteres" is very rock; the electric guitars bring a heavy sound that fits perfectly with the harmonic choices of the voice and the catchy chorus. The Prog factor comes from the central mood change, where the guitars express themselves best in a wide-ranging solo, and again close to Neo Prog.
"Pieces Of Glass" explores more in the Folk field, thanks to the use of ancient instrumentation and a driving rhythm. Beautiful is the typically British melodic movement, which somehow recalls material from Imaginaerum by Laura Piazzai and Clive Nolan. Vigorous electric interventions from the guitars are a surprise in the context. But it's in "Faery Wood" that the atmospheres involve the listener in a world made of woods and fairies. The rhythm slows down, and wind instruments reminiscent of the whistle come in.
The seven minutes of "Crystal Caves" are enchanting, again thanks to the voice, but also to the changes in tempo. Beautiful is the instrumental finale.
In "The Cult", the song formula is more respected, although there are certainly Prog-Folk moments. The closing track is "When Stars Collide", the longest song on the album, where all the characteristics described so far are put on the table.
"The Glare" is a smooth, pleasant album, engaged in electric Rock Folk, but also respectful of the past, where the artists themselves seem to have a lot of fun playing; and it's known that in listening, this is contagious. The album is released on November 2, 2025. MS
