Fiumi d'inchiostro sono stati versati negli anni sull'argomento "Il Rock è morto?" senza venire effettivamente a capo di nulla, specialmente in suolo italico, dove il genere è rimasto di nicchia e per pochi adepti. In realtà è sempre esistito, ma una cattiva distribuzione e il poco credere in esso da parte delle case discografiche, soprattutto nelle vendite, hanno fatto sì che tutto rimanesse nell'underground. Come si dice in questi casi, sotto la cenere la brace è comunque viva.
Per fortuna esistono amanti del settore che gettano anima e corpo in questa musica e, diciamo anche, "ricerca" del movimento che non è sicuramente facile scovare se non si è dentro delle argomentazioni. Mirco DeFox Galliazzo ha un'intuizione che rende merito anche alla sua grande cultura musicale, quella di raccogliere in un CD (rivalutando lo stesso in un periodo dove la musica liquida la fa da padrona) alcuni degli artisti che tanto si sono adoperati nell'Underground Rock e dintorni, Metal compreso. Attraverso un annuncio su Rockitaly Magazine, parte una selezione che conduce al risultato di questa compilation intitolata "Roccaccio Vol. 1" con l'artwork di Stellaclone Design diretto dal noto fotografo RRR Remi Real Rock.
Andiamo dunque a conoscere questi tredici artisti partecipanti all'opera:
Sappiamo che il Rock è attitudine, stile di vita, e a Verona nel 1997 dei ragazzi provenienti dalla storica band Spitfire creano il progetto EX, dove il Metal diretto contro il disagio sociale è un pugno allo stomaco. "Salto Nel Vuoto" è il pezzo proposto tratto dall'album "Combattere Sempre" (Andromeda Relix – 2025) in pieno stile N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), contenente un riff tagliente e odore di polvere di strada.
La ricerca di Galliazzo resta nel ramo storico del genere italiano pescando i Feline Melinda, band altoatesina autrice di otto album, fra questi due live e un EP. La band di Rob Irbiz e Andy De Santis, sorta nel 1986, muta stile nel tempo passando da uno Speed Metal compatto e melodico a un Metal dalle tinte AOR. Il brano qui proposto è "More Than Ever" estrapolato da "Seven" (Autoproduzione – 2024), energico e accattivante con un ritornello gradevole da cantare.
Seguono i bolognesi John Dallas, quartetto attivo dal 2013 capitanato dal leader carismatico John Dallas. Hanno all'attivo due album, "Wild Life" (Burning Minds - 2015) e "Love & Glory" (Burning Minds - 2021). Sono fra i moderni portabandiera dell'Hard Rock italico, autori di canzoni rispettose del passato (AC/DC su tutti) e allo stesso tempo attuali. Orecchiabile e trascinante, "John Dallas" è una canzone dalle aperture solari impossibili da domare.
Ritorna la N.W.O.B.H.M., qui splendidamente rappresentata dal trio Spitfire MkIII (ex Spitfire), ancora oggi fedele allo spirito del primo movimento italiano. Si formano nel lontano 1981 a Verona e hanno alle spalle una solida esperienza, soprattutto in sede live, oltre che una ricca discografia a nome Spitfire. "Shadows Phantoms Nightmares" è il primo album con il nuovo nome datato 2022 edito da DeFox Records, dal quale viene estratto per questa occasione "Despair". Tanto Saxon style e energia a profusione.
Con i Wyv85 siamo al cospetto della reunion della line-up originale dei Wyvern, altra formazione storica di Parma dei primi anni '80. "Save Humanity" è tratto dall'ultimo EP e presenta una band Hard Rock ricca di esperienza e mai doma del sound passato. Fabio Bonaccorsi (voce) conduce il brano con sapienza e consapevolezza.
Si ritorna in Veneto con una delle voci storiche del genere, quella di Gianni Bardotti e del suo progetto attuale Jan-Os. Questa formazione può considerarsi a tutti gli effetti un supergruppo formato da musicisti della scena Rock della bassa padovana, vicentina, rodigina e veronese. "Treaths" trasuda Rock da tutti i pori con caparbietà e saggezza.
Più recenti i Kross Of Khaoss, nati nel 2012 a Treviso, dediti a un sound crudo ed esplosivo grazie alla fusione di più generi come il Punk, lo Speed Metal e il Blues. "The Dark Passenger" è il titolo dell'EP di debutto datato 2015. Il pezzo proposto nella compilation s'intitola "Snow White" e sprigiona tutta l'essenza di questa formazione che nel tempo si è saputa far rispettare soprattutto in sede live dividendo il palco con grandi artisti come Anvil, Nanowar Of Steel e moltissimi altri.
È la volta dei Carillon, progetto del batterista Loris Rigoni con "Perduti Orgogli". Si fondano nel 2013 e rilasciano "Rumore E Silenzio" (Andromeda Relix) nel 2018, disco che li mette all'attenzione del pubblico e della critica, tanto da partecipare nel 2021 e nel 2022 all'edizione di Sanremo Rock. Il brano qui proposto presenta un duo attento alla ricerca oltre che alle giuste melodie facili da memorizzare. Buona la voce della veronese Patty Simon.
Con i Serena Rock Band siamo al cospetto di un altro artista storico italiano, Franco Serena (Ragazzi Dai Capelli Verdi, Nuvole Di Paglia). Attivo sin dal 1964, Serena vive passaggi nel Beat sino al Progressive Rock. "Soli" è un capitolo che mostra il suo lato più Rock, dal quale fuoriesce tutta l'esperienza annosa dell'autore.
"Roccaccio Vol. 1" presenta anche un artista poliedrico che si adopera fra parole, chitarra e sperimentazione, esso si chiama Lele Croce. Nella carriera riceve diversi premi come il "Primo Traguardo" di Milano, il "Musica Libera" di Roma e il "Ritmi Globali Europei" a Treviso. "Libertad" è un pezzo trascinante intriso di Blues e Rock sudista davvero godibile.
Un altro nome di spicco in questa compilation è quello degli X-Hero, band di Heavy Metal che ritorna oggi a noi con l'album "Evil Union" (DeFox Records / Heart Of Steel Records). Il leader fondatore e cantante Mirko Defox Galliazzo è autore di un'ottima prova sopra le righe immersa in un Metal Prog diretto; il brano proposto s'intitola "All Universe".
Si tira un attimo di respiro con i Runaluna che propongono una ballata toccante dal titolo "Luminescence". Anche questo potrebbe considerarsi un supergruppo, con elementi provenienti da gruppi come X-Hero, Blondie Fox, Tactusrosa e Giga From Nowhere. L'eleganza del Rock proposto sfiora anche il Progressive Rock e tanto dello scenario anni '80. Il brano scritto dal tastierista e bassista Sandro Benetti è una perla sonora.
La raccolta si conclude con l'elettronica dei PC-Newton, che grazie a "Fuck The Virus" si diverte a scorrazzare su una base che richiama "Another One Bites The Dust" dei Queen. Il moniker è tratto dal film di Nicolas Roeg del 1976 interpretato da David Bowie. Viaggi intergalattici e ottime intuizioni di chitarra.
Quello che m'intriga maggiormente dopo questa lunga cavalcata nella musica Rock italiana è quel "Vol. 1" che ben mi fa sperare in una replica. "Roccaccio Vol. 1" è un'occasione per chi si fosse persa la scena underground in analisi; Mirco DeFox Galliazzo ha avuto un'illuminante intuizione e noi gliene siamo grati. MS

Rivers of ink have been spilled over the years on the topic "Is Rock dead?" without coming to any real conclusion, especially in Italy, where the genre has remained a niche for a select few. In reality, it has always existed, but poor distribution and a lack of faith in it from record labels, particularly in terms of sales, have meant that everything has remained underground. As they say in these cases, the embers are still glowing beneath the ashes.
Fortunately, there are fans of the genre who throw their heart and soul into this music and, let's say, "research" the movement, which is not easy to discover unless you're inside the scene. Mirco DeFox Galliazzo has had an intuition that does justice to his great musical culture, gathering some of the artists who have worked tirelessly in Underground Rock and related genres, including Metal, on a CD (re-evaluating it in a period where streaming music dominates). Through an announcement on Rockitaly Magazine, a selection process began that led to the result of this compilation, titled "Roccaccio Vol. 1", with artwork by Stellaclone Design directed by the renowned photographer RRR Remi Real Rock.
Let's get to know the thirteen participating artists:
We know that Rock is an attitude, a lifestyle, and in Verona in 1997, some guys from the historic band Spitfire created the project EX, where Metal directly addresses social discomfort like a punch to the stomach. "Salto Nel Vuoto" is the proposed track from the album "Combattere Sempre" (Andromeda Relix – 2025), in the style of N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), with a sharp riff and a whiff of street dust.
Galliazzo's research stays within the historical branch of the Italian genre, featuring Feline Melinda, a South Tyrolean band that has released eight albums, including two live albums and an EP. The band, founded by Rob Irbiz and Andy De Santis in 1986, has changed style over time, moving from compact and melodic Speed Metal to Metal with AOR touches. The proposed track is "More Than Ever", taken from "Seven" (Self-produced – 2024), energetic and captivating with a catchy chorus.
Next up are the Bolognese band John Dallas, a quartet active since 2013, led by the charismatic leader John Dallas. They have released two albums, "Wild Life" (Burning Minds - 2015) and "Love & Glory" (Burning Minds - 2021). They are among the modern flag bearers of Italian Hard Rock, writing songs that respect the past (AC/DC above all) while being contemporary. Catchy and uplifting, "John Dallas" is a song with solar openings that can't be tamed.
The N.W.O.B.H.M. returns, beautifully represented by the trio Spitfire MkIII (ex Spitfire), still faithful to the spirit of the first Italian movement today. Formed in 1981 in Verona, they have a solid experience, particularly in live performances, and a rich discography under the name Spitfire. "Shadows Phantoms Nightmares" is their first album under the new name, released in 2022 on DeFox Records, from which "Despair" is taken. Saxon style and energy abound.
With Wyv85, we're witnessing the reunion of the original lineup of Wyvern, another historic formation from Parma in the early 1980s. "Save Humanity" is taken from their latest EP and showcases a Hard Rock band rich in experience and never tamed by past sounds. Fabio Bonaccorsi (vocals) leads the track with wisdom and awareness.
We're back in Veneto with one of the genre's historic voices, Gianni Bardotti, and his current project Jan-Os. This formation can be considered a supergroup, made up of musicians from the Rock scene in the Padua, Vicenza, Rovigo, and Verona areas. "Treaths" oozes Rock from every pore with determination and wisdom.
More recent are Kross Of Khaoss, formed in 2012 in Treviso, dedicated to a raw and explosive sound thanks to the fusion of genres like Punk, Speed Metal, and Blues. "The Dark Passenger" is the title of their debut EP, released in 2015. The track proposed in the compilation is "Snow White", which embodies the essence of this formation, which has earned respect over time, especially in live performances, sharing the stage with great artists like Anvil, Nanowar Of Steel, and many others.
It's the turn of Carillon, a project led by drummer Loris Rigoni with "Perduti Orgogli". Formed in 2013, they released "Rumore E Silenzio" (Andromeda Relix) in 2018, an album that brought them to the attention of the public and critics, leading to their participation in the 2021 and 2022 editions of Sanremo Rock. The track proposed here features a duo attentive to research and catchy melodies. Good vocals by Veronese singer Patty Simon.
With Serena Rock Band, we're in the presence of another Italian historic artist, Franco Serena (Ragazzi Dai Capelli Verdi, Nuvole Di Paglia). Active since 1964, Serena has passed through Beat and Progressive Rock. "Soli" is a chapter that showcases his Rock side, from which his years of experience shine through.
"Roccaccio Vol. 1" also features a multifaceted artist who works with words, guitar, and experimentation, Lele Croce. Throughout his career, he has received several awards, including the "Primo Traguardo" in Milan, "Musica Libera" in Rome, and "Ritmi Globali Europei" in Treviso. "Libertad" is a catchy track infused with Blues and Southern Rock, truly enjoyable.
Another standout name in this compilation is X-Hero, an Heavy Metal band that returns today with the album "Evil Union" (DeFox Records / Heart Of Steel Records). The founder and lead singer, Mirko Defox Galliazzo, is the author of an excellent, over-the-top performance immersed in direct Metal Prog; the proposed track is "All Universe".
We take a breather with Runaluna, who propose a touching ballad titled "Luminescence". This could also be considered a supergroup, with members from bands like X-Hero, Blondie Fox, Tactusrosa, and Giga From Nowhere. The elegance of the Rock proposed here borders on Progressive Rock and the 1980s scenario. The track, written by keyboardist and bassist Sandro Benetti, is a sonic pearl.
The collection concludes with the electronic sounds of PC-Newton, who have fun with "Fuck The Virus", a track that recalls "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen. The moniker is taken from the 1976 film by Nicolas Roeg starring David Bowie. Intergalactic travels and great guitar insights.
What intrigues me most after this long ride through Italian Rock music is the "Vol. 1" that makes me hope for a sequel. "Roccaccio Vol. 1" is an opportunity for those who might have missed the underground scene; Mirco DeFox Galliazzo has had an illuminating intuition, and we're grateful to him. MS
