La Liguria ha dato tantissime band al Rock Italiano degli anni ’70, dai New Trolls ai Latte e Miele, Delirium, Ibis, JET, Nuova Idea, Osage Tribe, Picchio Dal Pozzo e Tritons, tanto per fare alcuni nomi. I Garybaldi sono la band del carismatico chitarrista Bambi Fossati, artista dedito alle sonorità di J. Hendrix. In precedenza ha frequentato i Gleemen, altra band che si adopera nel 1970 a cavallo fra il Beat e le cover dei Beatles. Di loro si può reperire l’album “Gleemen”, dove il quartetto si alterna fra Blues e Rock Psichedelico, con un cantato da parte di Bambi, molto simile a quello di Hendrix. Nel 1971 c’è stato un momento in cui la band, a cavallo dei due nomi, ha avuto fra le fila il fratello Ivano Fossati, poi immediatamente dopo leader dei Delirium. I Garybaldi comprendono anche Angelo Traverso (basso), Maurizio Cassinelli (batteria) e Lio Marchi (tastiere).
Quando si parla di “Nuda” non può non venire alla mente la stupenda copertina disegnata da Guido Crepax, una vera icona per quegli anni, uno stile inconfondibile, fumettistico, ma di una sensualità esagerata (l’indimenticabile Valentina). Quella volta la copertina del LP non era solo gatefuld, ma si apriva addirittura in tre parti e mostrava a pieno la bellezza rappresentativa della donna.
Il disco è dannatamente Rock, con ovvi richiami al maestro chitarrista di Woodstock e delle citazioni a James Brown, a partire dall’ottima “Maya Desnuda”, dove la grinta della band mette alla luce una compattezza invidiabile, soprattutto per le band di quei tempi.
Non mancano frangenti sperimentali e psichedelici, tanto di moda e alternativi. Imponente la lunga suite del secondo lato, che occupa tutta la facciata e suddivisa in tre movimenti, dal titolo “Moretto Da Brescia”, è qui che la band riesce a dare il meglio di se, rendendo unico ed appetibile questo lavoro a tutti gli estimatori del genere, anche quelli di oggi.
L’anno successivo i Garybaldi tentano di bissare il successo di “Nuda” con “Astrolabio”, lavoro ancora più pretenzioso e Progressivo nel puro senso del termine, tuttavia io vi consiglio di comperare il primo, in quanto dalle note sgorga freschezza e voglia di musica, quella con la M maiuscola. Bambi Fossati muore a Genova il 7 giugno 2014 dopo una lunga malattia. (MS)

Liguria has given birth to many bands in the Italian Rock scene of the 1970s, from New Trolls to Latte e Miele, Delirium, Ibis, JET, Nuova Idea, Osage Tribe, Picchio Dal Pozzo, and Tritons, just to name a few. The Garybaldi are the band of the charismatic guitarist Bambi Fossati, an artist devoted to J. Hendrix's sound. Previously, he had been part of the Gleemen, another band that in 1970 straddled between Beat and Beatles covers. Their album "Gleemen" can be found, where the quartet alternates between Blues and Psychedelic Rock, with Bambi's vocals sounding very similar to Hendrix's. In 1971, there was a moment when the band, under both names, had Bambi's brother Ivano Fossati in its lineup, who would later become the leader of Delirium. The Garybaldi also included Angelo Traverso (bass), Maurizio Cassinelli (drums), and Lio Marchi (keyboards).
When talking about "Nuda", one can't help but think of the stunning cover art designed by Guido Crepax, a true icon of those years, with an unmistakable style, comic book-like, but with an exaggerated sensuality (the unforgettable Valentina). That time, the LP cover wasn't just gatefold, but opened into three parts, fully showcasing the representative beauty of women.
The disc is damn rockin', with obvious references to the master guitarist of Woodstock and citations of James Brown, starting with the excellent "Maya Desnuda", where the band's grit showcases an enviable compactness, especially for bands of that time.
There are no lack of experimental and psychedelic moments, trendy and alternative. Impressive is the long suite on the second side, which occupies the entire face and is divided into three movements, titled "Moretto Da Brescia". This is where the band excels, making this work unique and appealing to all genre enthusiasts, including those of today.
The following year, the Garybaldi attempted to repeat the success of "Nuda" with "Astrolabio", an even more pretentious and Progressive work in the pure sense of the term. However, I recommend buying the first one, as it exudes freshness and a desire for music, with a capital M. Bambi Fossati passed away in Genoa on June 7, 2014, after a long illness. (MS)
