La parola d’ordine della band palermitana Silver Nightmare sembra essere “omogeneità”.
Abbiamo avuto la possibilità di ascoltarli attraverso l’ep di debutto “The Wandering Angel” (2020) e il disco “Apocalypsis” (2022) dai quali abbiamo conosciuto un approccio alla musica pressoché totale. Lo stile adoperato per proferire i propri messaggi sonori va ad attingere in diversi contesti come il Progressive Rock, il Metal, l’AOR, e nel classicismo, a testimonianza di un amore per la musica davvero radicato.
L’esperienza che il quartetto formato da Gabriele Taormina (tastiere), Gabriele Esposito (basso), Diego La Mantia (chitarre), e Alessio Maddaloni (batteria e percussioni), è oggi accresciuta, donando anche a questo nuovo ep intitolato “Roxy Passion” un’aurea di risoluta maturazione.
Quattro sono i brani contenuti di cui due inediti, "Roxy Passion" e "Cats On The Run", mentre il singolo già edito "The Blue Light Of A Star" è rivisitato in due nuove versioni, quella con Göran Edman (ex Malmsteen) alla voce e la space version.
Il brano “Roxy Passion” scatta una fotografia del sound odierno della band, anche qui con Edman alla voce, un notevole valore aggiunto all’energico progetto. Grintoso approccio verso l’Hard Rock fra le righe, impreziosito da interventi di cori e tanta storia passata. Interessante il frangente in cui le tastiere si danno staffetta con la chitarra elettrica in un breve assolo carico di adrenalina come spesso hanno saputo fare i maestri Deep Purple o i Rainbow più ispirati.
"Cats On The Run" è uno strumentale in cui le tastiere ricoprono il ruolo centrale, e qui si apre il mondo Silver Nightmare più ricercato. Tutte le parti strumentali sono di buona fattura senza perdersi in inutili tecnicismi ma badando alla sostanza, e a quel piacevole riff che hanno saputo inculcarci nella mente.
Con un intro ispirato dalle coralità Queen, "The Blue Light Of A Star" è una chicca sonora, dove certi movimenti richiamano i Queensryche più intimistici. Cori, pianoforte e voci fanno scorrere brividi sulla pelle in un mix fra la band di Geoff Tate e i Savatage. La seconda versione si tinge di suoni psichedelici a tratti eterei, un esempio di come uno stesso brano possa dare differenti emozioni, se saputo arrangiare a dovere. Il pezzo, in questo caso, è completamente strumentale.
La veste grafica di questo ep è a cura di Ester Cardella, mentre la registrazione, il mixaggio e la masterizzazione viene effettuata ad opera di Simone Campione ai Mind Studios Palermo.
Non ho dubbi sulla qualità della band, capace di comporre musica che può mettere d’accordo molti generi di ascoltatori, certamente “Roxy Passion” fa salire le aspettative per un nuovo lavoro in studio, non resta quindi che attendere nuovi sviluppi, nel frattempo accontentiamoci del saporito antipasto. The watchword of the Palermo-based band Silver Nightmare seems to be “homogeneity.”
We had the chance to listen to them through the debut ep “The Wandering Angel” (2020) and the album “Apocalypsis” (2022) from which we knew an almost total approach to music. The style employed to proffer their sonic messages goes to draw in different contexts such as Progressive Rock, Metal, AOR, and in classicism, testifying to a truly deep-rooted love for music.
The experience that the quartet formed by Gabriele Taormina (keyboards), Gabriele Esposito (bass), Diego La Mantia (guitars), and Alessio Maddaloni (drums and percussion), is now increased, giving even to this new ep entitled “Roxy Passion” an aura of resolute maturity.
Four tracks are contained of which two are previously unreleased, “Roxy Passion” and “Cats On The Run,” while the already edited single “The Blue Light Of A Star” is revisited in two new versions, the one with Göran Edman (former Malmsteen) on vocals and the space version.
The track “Roxy Passion” takes a snapshot of the band's current sound, again with Edman on vocals, a notable added value to the energetic project. Gritty approach toward Hard Rock between the lines, embellished by chorus interventions and a lot of past history. Interesting is the juncture where the keyboards relay with the electric guitar in a short, adrenaline-filled solo as the masters Deep Purple or the more inspired Rainbow often did.
“Cats On The Run” is an instrumental in which the keyboards play the central role, and this is where the more searching Silver Nightmare world opens up. All the instrumental parts are well crafted without getting lost in unnecessary technicalities but minding the substance, and that pleasant riff they were able to instill in our minds.
With an intro inspired by Queen choruses, “The Blue Light Of A Star” is a sonic gem, where certain movements recall the more intimate Queensryche. Choruses, piano and vocals send chills running over the skin in a mix between Geoff Tate's band and Savatage. The second version is tinged with psychedelic sounds at times ethereal, an example of how the same song can give different emotions if arranged properly. The piece, in this case, is completely instrumental.
The graphic design of this ep is by Ester Cardella, while the recording, mixing and mastering is done by Simone Campione at Mind Studios Palermo.
I have no doubts about the quality of the band, capable of composing music that can bring together many genres of listeners, certainly “Roxy Passion” raises expectations for a new studio work, so all that remains is to wait for new developments, in the meantime let's be satisfied with the tasty appetizer.
