Ma che ho ascoltato?
Quando generalmente si prende in mano uno strumento, è perché qualche artista ci ha colpito dentro. La voglia di emulazione è naturale, solo il tempo successivamente stabilirà se fare della musica un semplice passatempo oppure uno stile di vita. Con questo intendo sottolineare che ognuno di noi siamo cresciuti con un’influenza ben specifica, soltanto la personalità e le esperienze future di altri ascolti plasmeranno definitivamente il nostro carattere musicale. Questa regola vale per tutti, quindi non c’è da stupirsi se in alcuni lavori si possono individuare delle influenze ben specifiche. C’è chi tende limitatamente a richiamarle, e chi invece s’immerge totalmente in quest’ambito, poi esistono i casi ancor più rari di chi fa di questa musica un credo di vita, tanto da sembrare immerso anacronisticamente in quei tempi. E’ il caso della band romana Neoprimitivi.
Cosa accade in questo contesto è presto detto, qui il tempo non esiste, il debutto “Orgia Mistero” sembra sorto in tutto e per tutto negli anni ’70, dietro la scia del Krautrock psichedelico. Non è solo ispirazione, neppure rifacimento, qui si ha la netta sensazione di essere proprio in questo periodo storico che tanto ha saputo dare alla musica per la mente. La 42 Records è stata coraggiosa, perché qui si ascolta tutto ciò che la musica oggi non è più, un prodotto anacronistico senza mezzi di sorta, ma probabilmente la carta vincente è proprio questa, rivolgersi a un pubblico di nicchia (forse disperato per la pressoché dipartita di questa musica) sicuramente affamato di queste sonorità.
Di base sono una Jam band, dove le date dal vivo ricoprono un lato davvero importante del proprio essere. Andrea Gonnellini, bassista, cantante e fondatore del gruppo, racconta al Rolling Stone di essersi ispirato al brano “Shock in My Town” di Battiato per la scelta del nome, il quale rappresenta al meglio il concetto della loro musica. Con Andrea suonano Pietro Rianna, Flavio Gonnellini, che oltre a essere suo fratello è anche il produttore dell’album insieme a Giacomo Fiorenza, Giacomo O’Neil, Martino Petrella, Roberto Callipari ed Emilia Wesolowska.
L’idea per la suite d’apertura nasce dalla visione del film fantascientifico “Sul Globo D’Argento” di Zulawski del 1988, qui i protagonisti si sentono portatori di una nuova civiltà.
L’album in senso generale, è incentrato sul basso e la batteria, oltre che nella rumoristica, non a caso i Neoprimitivi nascono, come ho avuto modo di dire, come Jam band. La suite, intitolata “Sul Globo D’Argento”, ha la durata di ventuno minuiti suddivisi in cinque movimenti, a partire da “2067” dove la band primordiale di Lou Reed sembra addirittura essere attuale. Il secondo andamento porta il titolo di “Do It Again”, un omaggio a Jonathan Richman (The Modern Lovers), a seguire “Arrival On The Planet”, “Ralph Und Florian” (Kraftwerk?) e la finale “Scolopendra”, il tutto per un trip assolutamente senza tempo. Quello che scopriamo nella seconda parte del disco è una sorta di scatola magica contenete piccole perle del passato. “Artificiali” è pura Psichedelia Folk, anche se le tematiche vanno a trattare argomenti odierni come l’Intelligenza Artificiale avvicinata a Dio. L’accostamento testo/musica così incongruente ha un fascino particolarissimo che neppure riesco a descrivere a parole. Mi sarebbe piaciuto vedervela ballare, con i suoi tradizionali “Na, na, na…”.
“La Teiera Nera” già nel titolo suggerisce dove la band va a parare, in quel capolavoro Canterburyano intitolato “Flying Teapot”, qui rivisitato in maniera più divertente dell’originale.
Il disco si conclude con “Natulrich”, probabilmente nei dieci minuti che lo compongono è il movimento più libero e sperimentale della band.
“Orgia Mistero” potrebbe benissimo risiedere nella discografia di band come Velvet Underground, Neu!, oppure Can, tanti i punti di congiunzione fra di loro. Provocazione o genio? Non m’interessa, questo bagno nel passato è una manna dal cielo per chi come me di Krautrock puro è rimasto a bocca asciutta da troppo tempo. MS

What have I been listening to?
When we generally pick up an instrument, it is because some artist has struck us inside. The desire to emulate is natural, only time later will determine whether to make music a mere pastime or a way of life. By this I mean to emphasize that each of us grew up with a very specific influence, only personality and future experiences of other listening will definitely shape our musical character. This rule applies to everyone, so it is not surprising that one can identify very specific influences in some works. There are those who tend limitedly to recall them, and those who totally immerse themselves in this sphere, then there are the even rarer cases of those who make this music a creed of life, so much so that they seem anachronistically immersed in those times. This is the case of the Roman band Neoprimitivi.
What happens in this context is quickly said, here time does not exist, the debut “Orgia Mistero” seems to have arisen in all respects in the 1970s, behind the wake of psychedelic Krautrock. It is not just inspiration, not even remaking, here you get the distinct feeling that you are right in this historical period that gave so much to music for the mind.
42 Records was brave, because here we hear everything that music today is no longer, an anachronistic product with no means whatsoever, but probably the trump card is just that, targeting a niche audience (perhaps desperate for the near-departure of this music) surely hungry for these sounds.
Basically they are a jam band, where live dates cover a really important side of their being. Andrea Gonnellini, bassist, vocalist and founder of the group, tells Rolling Stone that he was inspired by the song “Shock in My Town” by Battiato when choosing the name, which best represents the concept of their music. Playing with Andrea are Pietro Rianna, Flavio Gonnellini, who besides being his brother is also the producer of the album along with Giacomo Fiorenza, Giacomo O'Neil, Martino Petrella, Roberto Callipari and Emilia Wesolowska.
The idea for the opening suite came from watching Zulawski's 1988 sci-fi film “Sul Globo D’Argento,” here the protagonists feel they are the bearers of a new civilization.
The album in a general sense, is focused on bass and drums, as well as in noise, not surprisingly Neoprimitives was born, as I have had occasion to say, as a Jam band. The suite, entitled “Sul Globo D’Argento,” is twenty-one minutes in length divided into five movements, starting with “2067” where Lou Reed's primordial band even seems to be current. The second trend bears the title “Do It Again,” an homage to Jonathan Richman (The Modern Lovers), followed by “Arrival On The Planet,” “Ralph Und Florian” (Kraftwerk?) and the final “Scolopendra,” all making for an absolutely timeless trip. What we discover in the second part of the disc is a kind of magic box containing little gems from the past. “Artificiali” is pure Folk Psychedelia, although the themes go to present-day topics such as Artificial Intelligence approaching God. The juxtaposition of such incongruent lyrics/music has a very special charm that even I cannot describe in words. I would have loved to have seen you dance to it, with its traditional “Na, na, na...”.
“La Teiera Nera” already in its title suggests where the band is going with that Canterbury masterpiece entitled “Flying Teapot,” here revisited in a more entertaining way than the original.
The disc ends with “Natulrich,” probably in its ten minutes it is the band's freest and most experimental movement.
“Orgia Mistero” could well reside in the discography of bands like Velvet Underground, Neu!, or Can, so many points of conjunction between them. Provocation or genius? I don't care, this bath in the past is a godsend for those like me of pure Krautrock who have been dry-mouthed for too long. MS
