È sempre motivo di soddisfazione constatare come i nomi storici del Rock Progressivo italiano siano ancora oggi artisticamente vitali; un segnale incoraggiante sia per la qualità della nostra produzione musicale, sia per la longevità stessa del genere. Roberto Carlotto, in arte Hunka Munka (già membro dei Dik Dik), prosegue il proprio cammino a cinque anni di distanza dal convincente “Foreste Interstellari” (2021). Lo fa affiancato dal fidato Joey Mauro, responsabile di tastiere, cori, programmazioni e orchestrazioni e da una compagine di ospiti di assoluto rilievo, tra cui Marcantonio Quinto, Gianluca Quinto, Andrea Arcangeli, Barbara Rubin, Minerba e Andrea Rinaldi.
Hunka Munka resta scolpito nella memoria degli appassionati e dei collezionisti soprattutto per l'eccellente “Dedicato A Giovanna G.” del 1972, un concept album bizzarro e decadente, caratterizzato da una vocalità graffiante. La carriera di Carlotto, oltre all’esperienza con i Dik Dik, vanta collaborazioni con Big 66, I Cuccioli e l’Anonima Sound di Ivan Graziani. In questo nuovo lavoro, “Demoni E Dei”, l'artista affronta l’eterno conflitto tra bene e male, recuperando idealmente il filo conduttore di quel debutto leggendario, celebre anche per la singolare copertina apribile a forma di toilette.
L’edizione fisica del disco si presenta con un apparato grafico di pregio curato da Ondemedie, arricchito dagli scatti di Ennio Stranieri, dall’artwork di Carmine ed Enzo De Marco e dalla copertina firmata dallo stesso Joey Mauro. È doveroso sottolineare come la cura per il prodotto fisico testimoni non solo amore per l’arte, ma un profondo rispetto per l’ascoltatore, dote purtroppo sempre più rara nel panorama attuale.
L'opera si apre con l’introduzione strumentale “Addio Dolce Edel”, un movimento malinconico in cui tastiere e chitarra dialogano con rara intensità; nel finale, il richiamo a “Lugano Addio” rende omaggio alla profonda stima per Ivan Graziani. Il registro cambia repentinamente con la vigorosa “Ossessioni”, un brano Hard Prog che evoca inizialmente le atmosfere di “R.I.P.” del Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, evolvendo poi in una sorta di versione energica e "arrabbiata" dei Dik Dik, supportata da una prova vocale solida e perfettamente integrata.
In “Cavalli Alati” convivono orchestrazioni classiche e suggestioni Progressive Metal, impreziosite dal fulmineo assolo di Andrea Rinaldi e dall’eccellente contributo strumentale e vocale di Barbara Rubin. Segue “Justine”, un breve interludio vintage che introduce “L’Aeroplano D’argento”. Quest'ultimo, già presente in “Dedicato A Giovanna G.”, viene qui riproposto in una veste più potente e raffinata; è ammirevole come la complessità tecnica riesca a sposarsi con la tradizione melodica italiana, merito del gusto compositivo di Carlotto. Dallo stesso LP del '72 proviene anche “Cattedrali Di Bambù”, firmata da Ivan Graziani e Herbert Pagani: l’interpretazione di Barbara Rubin e le incursioni delle chitarre elettriche elevano il brano verso vette di grande impatto emotivo.
Dopo il delicato passaggio pianistico di “Nati Sotto Una Stella Solitaria”, l'album vira verso l'epicità con “La Vendetta Degli Dei”, dove una sezione ritmica impeccabile sostiene il virtuosismo di Carlotto alle tastiere.
In “E Lo Chiami Vivere” emerge invece una vena cantautorale anni '70 che guarda tanto ai Dik Dik quanto ai Procol Harum. Tra i momenti più alti del disco si colloca lo strumentale “Una Tranquillità Apparente - Il Comico Triste”, caratterizzato da un raffinato gioco stereofonico di sintesi. La chiusura è affidata alla sequenza “Demoni” e “Danza Macabra”, vera punta di diamante del lavoro: un climax pirotecnico arricchito da un suggestivo duetto vocale.
“Demoni E Dei” è un album di altissimo profilo, sapientemente registrato presso i Dr Phibes Studio da Joey Mauro e masterizzato da Mauro Mulas. L'opera brilla per l'equilibrio tra ricerca sonora e melodia tipicamente italiana, eseguita da musicisti d'eccezione. Un lavoro raffinato che non rinuncia a stupire, confermandosi sin d'ora come una delle migliori uscite di questo 2026. MS

It is always a source of great satisfaction to see legendary names of Italian Progressive Rock remain artistically vital today; an encouraging sign for both the quality of our musical production and the longevity of the genre itself. Roberto Carlotto, professionally known as Hunka Munka (and a former member of Dik Dik), continues his artistic journey five years after the compelling “Foreste Interstellari” (2021). He does so alongside his trusted collaborator Joey Mauro—responsible for keyboards, backing vocals, programming, and orchestrations—and a lineup of distinguished guests, including Marcantonio Quinto, Gianluca Quinto, Andrea Arcangeli, Barbara Rubin, Minerba, and Andrea Rinaldi.
Hunka Munka remains etched in the memories of enthusiasts and collectors primarily for the excellent “Dedicato A Giovanna G.” from 1972, a bizarre and decadent concept album characterized by raspy, powerful vocals. Carlotto's career, beyond his time with Dik Dik, boasts collaborations with Big 66, I Cuccioli, and Ivan Graziani’s Anonima Sound. In this new work, “Demoni E Dei”, the artist tackles the eternal conflict between good and evil, ideally picking up the thread of that legendary debut, which was also famous for its unique toilet-shaped gatefold cover.
The physical edition of the record features high-quality graphic production by Ondemedie, enriched by the photography of Ennio Stranieri, artwork by Carmine and Enzo De Marco, and a cover designed by Joey Mauro himself. It is worth noting that such care for a physical product demonstrates not only a love for art but a profound respect for the listener—a quality that is, unfortunately, becoming increasingly rare in the current landscape.
The work opens with the instrumental intro “Addio Dolce Edel”, a melancholy movement where keyboards and guitar dialogue with rare intensity; in the finale, a reference to “Lugano Addio” pays tribute to the deep esteem held for Ivan Graziani. The tone shifts abruptly with the vigorous “Ossessioni”, a Hard Prog track that initially evokes the atmosphere of Banco del Mutuo Soccorso’s “R.I.P.”, before evolving into a sort of energetic and "angry" version of Dik Dik, supported by a solid and perfectly integrated vocal performance.
In “Cavalli Alati”, classical orchestrations and Progressive Metal influences coexist, embellished by Andrea Rinaldi’s lightning-fast guitar solo and Barbara Rubin’s excellent instrumental and vocal contribution. This is followed by “Justine”, a brief vintage interlude that leads into “L’Aeroplano D’argento”. The latter, originally featured on “Dedicato A Giovanna G.”, is presented here in a more powerful and refined arrangement; it is admirable how technical complexity manages to marry the Italian melodic tradition, a testament to Carlotto’s compositional taste. From the same 1972 LP comes “Cattedrali Di Bambù”, written by Ivan Graziani and Herbert Pagani: Barbara Rubin’s interpretation and the incursions of electric guitars elevate the song to heights of great emotional impact.
After the delicate piano passage of “Nati Sotto Una Stella Solitaria”, the album turns toward the epic with “La Vendetta Degli Dei”, where an impeccable rhythm section supports Carlotto’s keyboard virtuosity. In “E Lo Chiami Vivere”, a 1970s singer-songwriter vein emerges, nodding to both Dik Dik and Procol Harum. Among the highlights of the record is the instrumental “Una Tranquillità Apparente - Il Comico Triste”, featuring a sophisticated stereophonic interplay of synthesizers. The closing is entrusted to the sequence “Demoni” and “Danza Macabra”, the true crown jewel of the work: a pyrotechnic climax enriched by an evocative vocal duet.
“Demoni E Dei” is a high-profile album, expertly recorded at Dr Phibes Studio by Joey Mauro and mastered by Mauro Mulas. The work shines for its balance between sonic exploration and typically Italian melody, performed by exceptional musicians. A refined piece of work that never ceases to amaze, confirming itself even now as one of the best releases of 2026. MS
