RED
SAND – The Sound Of Silence Independent
Music Market (Vinile), SPBN Music (CD) Genere: Neo Prog Supporto: Vinile / CD – 2025
alimentato nuova linfa.
misto fra Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd e Camel.
David Gilmour o Andy Latimer e Steven Rothery, così come all'uso di buoni
I fans
Perry Angelillo (batteria). "The
(Marillion), "Ever" (IQ), "The Masquerade Overture"
(Pendragon), "The Visitor" (Arena) ed altri ancora, ovviamente.
È comunque piacevole immergersi in questi sette brani,
"Lost Fantasy (We Love)".
Fantasy (We Love)" ci starebbe benissimo.
"The Fountain Of Salmacis" e "Horizons". Poi la chitarra
elettrica ritorna nell'ovile di Andy Latimer, eccellente sotto molti punti di
vista, soprattutto per quello emotivo: struggente. "Watcher"
seconda parte strumentale di "The Sound Of Silence" è un altro
bellissimo momento da ascoltare ad occhi chiusi. A
diciotto minuti: "The Last Voice".
conclusione spetta a "The Best", e qui è David Gilmour a essere preso
"The
MS.

RED SAND – The Sound Of Silence Independent Music Market (Vinyl), SPBN Music (CD) Genre: Neo Prog Format: Vinyl / CD – 2025
Neo Prog, like Progressive Rock, has experienced
moments of glory and decline since 1983, when Marillion, with the EMI label,
infused new life into the genre. From then on, the genre has resided in a
limbo, largely catering to the most dedicated fans, and has now reached a
situation that could be described as stagnant. It exists, but it doesn't have
the same level of success as Progressive Rock in the 1970s, for example. This is the case in Italy, while in other countries
like Poland, England, and America, the trend seems to be better. However,
releases over time are quite numerous, as is the emergence of bands that are
fond of that sound, which is a mix of Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and
Camel. In 2003, Red Sand emerged from Canada, where guitarist
Simon Caron poured his passion for the aforementioned bands, as well as the Neo
Prog of the 1980s in general, into the band. The music features ample space for captivating guitar
solos à la David Gilmour or Andy Latimer and Steven Rothery, as well as good
keyboard textures. With these tools, Red Sand has managed to create a
respectable discography consisting of eleven studio albums. Fans of the genre
have grown attached to the band, which seems to have preserved every
characteristic of this sound with jealousy. Today, the band consists of Michel Renaud (vocals),
Simon Caron (guitars, bass, keyboards), and Perry Angelillo (drums). "The Sound Of Silence" is their twelfth
album, and I can tell you right away that it neither adds nor subtracts from
what I've said, meaning it's very enjoyable to listen to, alternating between
exciting moments and others that could be considered normal. You might say that
Neo Prog is like that, but that's not always the case. We've seen albums that
have a high level of intensity throughout their duration, such as "Script
For A Jester's Tear" (Marillion), "Ever" (IQ), "The
Masquerade Overture" (Pendragon), "The Visitor" (Arena), and
others. This is to say that Red Sand has great ideas, good
instrumental technique, but could provide more continuity to those moments of
emphasis that make the genre successful. It's still enjoyable to immerse
yourself in these seven tracks, starting with the instrumental
"Puzzle", which leads to the excellent "Lost Fantasy (We
Love)". The song is melancholic, rich in time changes, and when the
electric guitar launches into the final solo, you'd want it to never end. The
vocal interpretation is good, perfectly suited to the context. If it were
included in Arena's discography, "Lost Fantasy (We Love)" would fit
right in. It's the turn of the first part of "The Sound Of
Silence", and Genesis fans will be happy with the initial mix of styles
that alternate between "The Fountain Of Salmacis" and
"Horizons". Then the electric guitar returns to Andy Latimer's
territory, excellent in many ways, especially emotionally: it's
heart-wrenching. "Watcher" is nice, but it's somewhat
inferior to what we've heard so far; if it were slightly shorter, it would have
had a different outcome (this is just my personal taste, of course). The second instrumental part of "The Sound Of
Silence" is another beautiful moment to listen to with your eyes closed. Next up is the longest track on the album, lasting
over 18 minutes: "The Last Voice". Here, all the love that Red Sand
has for this music oozes out of every note, moving the listener at times with
those instrumental passages full of emphasis. It's a ride that's truly the
essence of Neo Prog! The conclusion is "The Best", and here David
Gilmour is taken as a reference and developed through their personality. "The Sound Of Silence" is the kind of album
you can listen to multiple times, the one that sits on the shelf and
occasionally winks at you. Enjoy it while you can. MS.

MICARELLI – Andyamo Music
Force / Egea Music Genere: Cantautore Supporto: libro/CD – 2025
Oggi
solista rilascia quattro album in studio: ”Ritratti”, “Non Me Ne Frega E
Canto”, “Sogni E Passaggi” e “Dreamy”.
Qui l’autore mette in luce quelle
tutti i dischi solisti dell’autore. Testo e musica fortemente legati fra loro. “Fammi
Senza distrazioni. Si
ha bisogno anche di silenzio. L’animo
gentile di Micarelli è ora a nudo, in pasto all’ascoltatore.
sinfonizzato. A
“Come
Un Oceano” è dedicata alla primogenita Aurora. Solare e serena nell’incedere,
orchestrazioni. “Come
In
MS
Versione Inglese:
ANDY MICARELLI – Andyamo Music Force / Egea Music Genre: Singer-Songwriter Format: Book/CD – 2025
Today, the reality of a singer-songwriter is not as
easy as it was in the past, whether it's because certain trends pass or because
people no longer take the time to listen to something meaningful. This requires
a good balance between catchy melodies and non-trivial lyrics. This formula,
which I would define as "magical", is not easy to achieve;
confirmation can be seen in the sound sales charts, where the singer-songwriter
is practically non-existent. Those who are fortunate enough to possess this
formula (the usual big names) make sure not to abandon it. Then there are the new generations that, like salmon,
try to swim upstream in this cascade of releases fueled by AI and PC programs.
And yes, today the life of a singer-songwriter is not easy. Andy Micarelli is from Chieti and often collaborates
with his Roman colleague Aleco, having produced five albums for him as an
arranger, which immediately frames the sonic context in which he operates. But his musical career has much deeper roots: he
graduated in saxophone from the "Luisa D'Annunzio" conservatory in
Pescara, collaborated with Marco Contento, participated as a keyboardist and
backing vocalist in Lighea's tour in 2011, produced a live duo with Roman singer-songwriter
Mauro Di Maggio, and supported the tour dates of the historic progressive rock
band Le Orme. As a solo artist, he has released four studio albums:
"Ritratti", "Non Me Ne Frega E Canto", "Sogni E
Passaggi", and "Dreamy". Today, "Andyamo", through its
eleven songs, offers a mature Micarelli with clear ideas and many concepts to
express, which is why the CD is accompanied by a book containing explanations
and lyrics, as well as accompanying photos. This is how the author describes
the concept in the first page of the book: "This album explores my life in
depth, thanks to a clear vision of things and the fundamental need to always
return home through memories, dearest affections, sense of belonging, and
introspection. In this album, I don't tell just any stories, but my
story". It starts with a cry of protest: "Basta".
Here, the author highlights those toxic friendships where people only reach out
when they need something (who hasn't experienced this?). The lyrics lead the
listener to reflect on the meaning of life and the choice of people who should
be close to you during your earthly journey: those who are sincere. The style on which the music is based is typically
Italian from the '80s, with small fragments of Orme and that "La La
La" that inevitably recalls the legendary Ivan Graziani; an intriguing
combination that brings back memories of the past. Aleco participates as a
narrating voice on the phone, asking his friend for a classic favor. "Viola" is dedicated to Micarelli's second
daughter, that love that builds and strengthens everything. The piano opens the
song, which wants to be a ballad but actually has great pop openings on a
simple and danceable rhythm, where the refrain is the focal point. If we are what we are today, the credit goes mainly to
our roots; the past is the wisdom from which to draw. This is the theme
addressed in "Radici Preziose". Here, the singer-songwriter style is
what has formed the backbone of all the author's solo albums. Lyrics and music
are strongly linked. "Fammi Volare" tackles the classic
"carpe diem", taking courage in everyday life and then letting go,
because, as Micarelli says, life is an adventure that requires spontaneity.
Here, electronics support the rhythm, along with the beautiful voice of guest
Alessandra Dambra. The sense of belonging mentioned earlier emerges in
the lyrics of "Teate", a song dedicated to his Chieti. It aims to be
a fierce defense of the city, often belittled and denigrated by many detractors
who, even as a trend, speak badly of it despite being residents themselves. The
music unravels like a love song, because it is one in every sense. A great
example of positivity that should be adopted by all of us, each for our own
roots. And then there's solitude. In "Silenzio",
the opportunity to dig into our thoughts detached from the world around us is
analyzed... Without distractions. One also needs silence. Micarelli's gentle
soul is now laid bare, for the listener to consume. The movement is primarily
centered on keyboards and voice. Thus, in life, there is always a moment when one must
get back up, and the immortal wrestler Hulk Hogan is taken as a reference
example in the song "Hulkmania". The piece is justifiably electric,
vigorous, with the electric guitar flowing into Hard Rock; it couldn't be
otherwise. The album of new songs concludes with a dedication to
Franco Battiato, his master and musical reference point. "A Franco"
is an epically symphonized instrumental. At this point, there are three songs written in the
past: "Come Un Oceano" in 2023, "Semplicità" in 2017, and
"Come Ti Vorrei" from 2014 in a remix version. "Come Un Oceano" is dedicated to his eldest
daughter Aurora. Solar and serene in its progression, it reminds me of
something from the dreamier Orme. "Semplicità" was released as a single in
2017 and deals with falling in love in its genuineness. Melodically soft, it
caresses the listener with piano interventions and orchestrations. "Come Ti Vorrei" is lighthearted. The first
draft was made on cassette in 2002, then recorded in the album "Non Mi
Frega E Canto" and also by the group Latoscuro with the voice of Francesca
Epifani. In conclusion, "Andyamo" is based on
sincerity, that of an author who loves music and creates it with intelligence
and taste. MS
ALECO – Il Sistema Della Vita Music Force / Egea Music Genere: Cantautore / Pop Supporto: Libro/CD – 2025
Ho
Felice” (2019), “Il Sapore Della Luna” (2021), e “Gli Amori Alle Stazioni”
(2022). Oggi
lavoro in doppio formato libro e CD. In
piano apre “Cuore Di Seta”, qui Aleco alza l’asticella e diventa altamente
ricordi proseguono anche attraverso i film italiani, in special modo viene
presa come riferimento l’immortale Anna Magnani.
musicale. In
Vengono in
i sogni.
MS

ALECO – Il Sistema Della Vita Music Force / Egea Music Genre: Singer-Songwriter / Pop Format: Book/CD – 2025
I have had the fortune and privilege of following
Aleco's (Alessandro Carletti Orsini) artistic career since his debut album. The
Roman singer-songwriter, through his music, has always conveyed joy, passion,
and happiness to me, a generic positivity that is present in all his albums “L’Ultima
Genera Felice” (2019), “Il Sapore Della Luna” (2021), and “Gli Amori Alle
Stazioni” (2022). Today, Aleco has further matured, both as a
musician/singer and composer of lyrics, to the point of pouring numerous concepts
and experiences into his latest work, “Il Sistema Della Vita”. For maximum
success, the artist presents the work in a dual format, book and CD. In this conceptual journey, the protagonist wakes up
from a dream where he analyzes his existence through introspective reflections
and memories. Love and summer are often mentioned in Aleco's music, here in a
particularly accentuated way. “Il Sistema Della Vita” is thus an intimate story
where the bond between the book and song lyrics perfectly merge. The packaging
is also beautiful, supported by the graphics of C Graphics and the photographs
of Luigi Baronetti, adding value for music buyers. The compositions are the
work of Alessandro Carletti Orsini and Andrea Micarelli, with the help of
special guests Cecilia Grifone on violin and Nancy Fazzini on vocals. There are nine tracks that make up the concept. “Un
Milione Di Anni Fa” delicately narrates the mental state of the protagonist,
immobilized in bed with a fixed gaze on the ceiling. He can't move, perhaps
stuck in a limbo between life and the afterlife. Here, he recollects his past
memories, among which a particularly loved and important cartoon stands out:
Ryu. But one of the most beautiful gifts life has given him
is the chance to take a break after school for three months and go to the sea,
where a girl waits for him with friends to spend pleasant days. And that's
where “Guance Rosse”, through a mature and highly catchy song, sticks in your
mind. The male/female vocal duet is good. Memories of love that each of us has
experienced at least once in life, another reason why the piece is highly
touching. A piano opens “Cuore Di Seta”, where Aleco raises the
bar and becomes highly intimate, alternating singing and spoken word, where the
refrain is a functional point of the song. Here, music is what saves the
protagonist when life slaps you and you want to scream enough, it's music that
takes you. The guitar solo is pleasant, and again the vocal combination with
Fazzini. A sound gem of well-structured Italian singer-songwriting and
melodies. The memories that linger in the protagonist's mind are
not just music but also cinema, especially Woody Allen's film “Midnight in
Paris” and the character Viola, who represents the Belle Epoque in his
imagination. The piece is titled “Negozio Nostalgia”, where in its hammering
progression, it narrates precisely this, and does so with malice and poetry. The memories continue through Italian films,
especially referencing the immortal Anna Magnani. Her essence lingers on a
bench in EUR, or Trastevere, or Campo de' Fiori... In a Roman woman known in
the full summer; this is the scenic imaginary described in “Sogno Di Una Notte
Di Quasi Estate”, a song with a Bossa Nova rhythm where Aleco returns to being
the sunny one that has distinguished him over the years in the music scene. In “Maledetta Giovinezza”, the thought turns to when
one is very young, naive but at the same time a driving force of adult
existence. Here, another woman, Silvia, tells the protagonist a story about a
mother raising her daughter. The style is a mix between Tiromancino and Max
Gazzè, pleasant and smooth. The refrain presents a different scenario, an
opening that surprisingly changes the rhythm. Here, I find the mature, refined,
and sophisticated Aleco. With “Lola”, the topic of thought diversification is
addressed. The 1970s come to mind, where the individual was at the center of
interest, where diversity of thought not only made us unique but also enriched
us culturally. The story is told by another friend of the protagonist, immobile
in bed, waiting for a probable sentence between heaven or purgatory; she is
Lola. The song unfolds over a catchy swing and a narrated trait. Meanwhile, the lying man feels close to death and
reflects on all the friends with whom he has shared his life, difficulties, and
dreams. No regrets, and it's here that he convinces himself to abandon himself
to his destiny, whatever will be, because he has understood “Il Sistema Della
Vita”. The piece is one of the highest moments of the concept, also the longest
with almost five minutes of duration. The vocal duet with Fazzini returns. But here's the final twist: the protagonist suddenly
wakes up from this apparent lethargy. The wolf loses its hair but not its vice,
so he dresses, goes out, and enjoys his umpteenth summer. “Pinoli”
is its worthy soundtrack. The artistic growth I perceive in “Il Sistema Della
Vita” also lies in the fact that Aleco distances himself from many reference
points of the past, well distinguishable in previous works, creating a purely
personal style. A remarkable productive and conceptual effort, a disc thought
out with the head but above all with the heart. Impossible to
ignore! MS

"spaziale" e elettronico. Anche in Italia abbiamo avuto tanti
avventurieri, soprattutto in campo sperimentale, sin dagli anni '70, e l'interesse
polistrumentista Paul Electron The Traslater. La musica proposta spazia
dall'elettronica allo Space Synth Prog, creando un nuovo filone e genere
musicale denominato "Cosmo Domine".
Nove
chitarra elettrica distorta. "Out
"Over"
invece conduce l'ascolto in un mondo rarefatto e molto pop anni '80. "Run
To The World Of Imagination" preme sull'acceleratore con l'utilizzo della
chitarra elettrica; qui i PC-Newton ricercano maggiormente e spaziano
nell'elettronica con personalità. Un altro frangente arioso s'intitola
"Now Last Time", mentre la conclusiva "Stratosferica" è la
"The
MS

Since the dawn of time, humanity's fascination with
space and alien life forms has been a focal point of interest. The love for the
unknown marries fantasy with reality, bringing forth in-depth explorations in
art. Music is no exception; many concept albums are centered around these themes,
often resulting in a sound that's both "spacey" and electronic. Italy
too has had its fair share of pioneers, particularly in experimental music,
starting from the 1970s, and this interest continues to this day with
underground projects. A prime example is PC-Newton, a visionary duo composed of
vocalist Cosmo Saint and multi-instrumentalist Paul Electron The Traslater.
Their music spans electronic to Space Synth Prog, creating a new genre dubbed
"Cosmo Domine". The name PC-Newton is inspired by TC Newton, the man
who fell to Earth, portrayed by David Bowie in the 1976 film by Nicolas Roeg. PC-Newton's discography began in 2017, and after seven
studio albums, it's now completed with "The Chronicles Of
CosmoSaint", a quest for the sound of the future. The nine tracks form a concept represented by RRR Remi
Galiazzo's artwork. The intergalactic journey starts with "Interstellar
Generation", where Cosmo Saint's voice describes the vast landscape with a
sound that balances between the '80s and 2000s. Some moments evoke New Wave due
to the catchy context. "Fuck The Virus" is a danceable track also
featured in the compilation "Roccaccio Vol. 1", drawing inspiration
from Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust", but later unfolding into a
different territory with distorted electric guitar moments. "Out Of Sight" propels us into the cosmos
and '70s experimental dance, an interesting piece for its sound choices and
structural solutions. The effects accompanying it are well-crafted.
"Berlin Blues Theme" is also noteworthy, with a simple melody
enriched by vocal interventions reminiscent of David Bowie's past work;
fittingly, it's followed by the track "Heroes", a highly personal
cover of the song by the Thin White Duke! "Over" transports the listener to a rarefied
'80s pop world. "Run To The World Of Imagination" accelerates with
electric guitar, where PC-Newton explores electronic music with personality.
Another airy segment is titled "Now Last Time", while the final
"Stratosferica" is a 16-minute spatial music gem where the duo's
creativity shines. "The Chronicles Of CosmoSaint" is a mature
album, respectful of the past but with an eye on the future, where creativity
blends with sonic and structural research; a variant to the music we listen to
today, opening a delightful parenthesis for our minds. Let me know if you'd like me to make any changes. MS

– We All We Are Ma.Ra.Cash
Records Genere: Rock Progressivo Supporto: CD / Digital – 2025
Ritornano
album “We All We Are”.
Oggi
programmazioni, arrangiamenti), Serhan Kazaz (chitarra, bouzouki, voce),
Stefano Spitale (fisarmonica), Piero Chiefa (basso) e Alessio Del Ben
(batteria).
Margherita Fossati (cori), Giulia Bertassi (fisarmonica) e Lorenzo D'Erasmo
(percussioni e flauto). Nove
di Rock, Hard Rock, World Music e Progressive Rock. Le
tematiche affrontate sono incidenti, così descrivono le note biografiche: “We
All We Are è stato ispirato principalmente dalla crisi della partecipazione
scienza, in continua evoluzione.
intrigante. Ed è con “In The Place Where I Was Born” che i Caravaggio aprono a
giro di basso su una ritmica sostenuta apre “We All We Are”, qui ci sono i
“White
Lies On Our Black Tongues” si rispecchia nuovamente nel lago King Crimson e
Comedy Tarantella”, fra World, Heavy e Prog! MS

The Milanese band Caravaggio returns after some lineup
changes with their second album “We All We Are”. Formed in 2015 with former
members of Adramelch, a Metal Prog band, Vittorio Ballerio (vocals) and Fabio
Troiani (guitar) take the reins of the project and, once the lineup is complete
with Marco Melloni on bass (Pino Scotto) and Alessio Del Ben on drums (Quel Che
Disse Il Tuono), release their debut album of the same name (I Cuochi Music
Company – 2022). The interest around the band from critics and public is good,
thanks to the quality of the music proposed, but they feel the need to enrich
their sound with the addition of a new instrument, the accordion; for this
reason, at the end of December 2024, after years of searching, they finally
find in Stefano Spitale an excellent element. Today the band is formed by Vittorio Ballerio
(vocals), Fabio Troiani (guitar, programming, arrangements), Serhan Kazaz
(guitar, bouzouki, vocals), Stefano Spitale (accordion), Piero Chiefa (bass),
and Alessio Del Ben (drums). For the final success of “We All We Are” they rely on
some special guests who go by the names of Guido Block (backing vocals),
Tiziano Chiapelli (accordion), Margherita Fossati (backing vocals), Giulia
Bertassi (accordion), and Lorenzo D'Erasmo (percussions and flute). The album consists of nine songs, lasting forty-eight
minutes, with a cover art by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo. The combination of accordion, bouzouki, mandolin,
percussions, jaw harp, castanets, etc. leads the sound towards a very personal
blend, also made of Rock, Hard Rock, World Music, and Progressive Rock. The themes addressed are incidental, as described in the
biographical notes: “We All We Are was mainly inspired by the crisis of
democratic participation that we are experiencing today all over the world. Since Machiavelli's times, the exercise of power has
become a real science, constantly evolving. Today, in many parts of the world,
ordinary people voluntarily elect those who will then limit their freedoms and
rights. To achieve this goal, power no longer needs to impose
itself through dictatorship, as it has developed communication tools capable of
obtaining the consent of the very masses it intends to oppress. Is this an irreversible process? What would happen if
people considered themselves not as a multitude of specific identities and
divergent trends, but as a powerful, united, and unstoppable force?” With these interesting premises, the album begins with
the five-minute “Isolation”, an excellent calling card where Ballerio's good
voice leads a movement that has King Crimson illuminations. Good use of backing
vocals too. “Rejoice” exudes Mediterranean vibes from every note
and presents good compositional insights that deviate from classic Progressive
Rock for an intriguing result. And it's with “In The Place Where I Was Born”
that Caravaggio opens up to introspective scenarios, where the chorus immediately
sticks in the mind, and when the electric guitar solo comes in, everything
becomes wide and sunny. A bass riff on a sustained rhythm opens “We All We
Are”, here are the Caravaggio of today, balancing between past and present. More researched is “Controversial”, a passage into Neo
Prog with Jazz insights enriching a movement that once again finds its winning
card in the catchy melody. “White Lies On Our Black Tongues” reflects again on
King Crimson and shows the band's technical qualities. And then comes “Behind The Mask, Part 1 and Part 2”,
where the first part is appreciated for a beautiful blend of classical guitar
and voice, while the second part raises the tone thanks to electric guitars.
For the writer, this is one of the best moments of the album, which concludes
with “Divine Comedy Tarantella”, between World, Heavy, and Prog! Caravaggio is a reality to support, rich in ideas and
a class that few other bands possess so naturally. A
must-have album! MS

Fiumi
In realtà è
tutto rimanesse nell'underground.
adoperati nell'Underground Rock e dintorni, Metal compreso.
Andiamo
dunque a conoscere questi tredici artisti partecipanti all'opera: Sappiamo
"Salto Nel
Vuoto" è il pezzo proposto tratto dall'album "Combattere Sempre"
(Andromeda Relix – 2025) in pieno stile N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave of British Heavy
Il brano qui proposto è "More Than Ever" estrapolato da
"Seven" (Autoproduzione – 2024), energico e accattivante con un
ritornello gradevole da cantare. Seguono
i bolognesi John Dallas, quartetto attivo dal 2013 capitanato dal leader
carismatico John Dallas. Hanno
all'attivo due album, "Wild Life" (Burning Minds - 2015) e "Love
& Glory" (Burning Minds - 2021).
(AC/DC su tutti) e allo stesso tempo attuali. Orecchiabile e trascinante,
occasione "Despair". Tanto Saxon style e energia a profusione.
bassa padovana, vicentina, rodigina e veronese. "Treaths" trasuda
Anvil, Nanowar Of Steel e moltissimi altri.
Franco Serena (Ragazzi Dai Capelli Verdi, Nuvole Di Paglia).
l'esperienza annosa dell'autore. "Roccaccio
/ Heart Of Steel Records).
brano proposto s'intitola "All Universe".
Tactusrosa e Giga From Nowhere.
Progressive Rock e tanto dello scenario anni '80.
One Bites The Dust" dei Queen.
intuizione e noi gliene siamo grati. MS

Rivers of ink have been spilled over the years on the
topic "Is Rock dead?" without coming to any real conclusion,
especially in Italy, where the genre has remained a niche for a select few. In
reality, it has always existed, but poor distribution and a lack of faith in it
from record labels, particularly in terms of sales, have meant that everything
has remained underground. As they say in these cases, the embers are still
glowing beneath the ashes. Fortunately, there are fans of the genre who throw
their heart and soul into this music and, let's say, "research" the
movement, which is not easy to discover unless you're inside the scene. Mirco
DeFox Galliazzo has had an intuition that does justice to his great musical
culture, gathering some of the artists who have worked tirelessly in
Underground Rock and related genres, including Metal, on a CD (re-evaluating it
in a period where streaming music dominates). Through an announcement on
Rockitaly Magazine, a selection process began that led to the result of this
compilation, titled "Roccaccio Vol. 1", with artwork by Stellaclone
Design directed by the renowned photographer RRR Remi Real Rock. Let's get to know the thirteen participating artists: We know that Rock is an attitude, a lifestyle, and in
Verona in 1997, some guys from the historic band Spitfire created the project
EX, where Metal directly addresses social discomfort like a punch to the
stomach. "Salto Nel Vuoto" is the proposed track from the album
"Combattere Sempre" (Andromeda Relix – 2025), in the style of
N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), with a sharp riff and a whiff
of street dust. Galliazzo's research stays within the historical
branch of the Italian genre, featuring Feline Melinda, a South Tyrolean band
that has released eight albums, including two live albums and an EP. The band,
founded by Rob Irbiz and Andy De Santis in 1986, has changed style over time,
moving from compact and melodic Speed Metal to Metal with AOR touches. The
proposed track is "More Than Ever", taken from "Seven"
(Self-produced – 2024), energetic and captivating with a catchy chorus. Next up are the Bolognese band John Dallas, a quartet
active since 2013, led by the charismatic leader John Dallas. They have
released two albums, "Wild Life" (Burning Minds - 2015) and
"Love & Glory" (Burning Minds - 2021). They are among the modern
flag bearers of Italian Hard Rock, writing songs that respect the past (AC/DC
above all) while being contemporary. Catchy and uplifting, "John
Dallas" is a song with solar openings that can't be tamed. The N.W.O.B.H.M. returns, beautifully represented by
the trio Spitfire MkIII (ex Spitfire), still faithful to the spirit of the
first Italian movement today. Formed in 1981 in Verona, they have a solid
experience, particularly in live performances, and a rich discography under the
name Spitfire. "Shadows Phantoms Nightmares" is their first album
under the new name, released in 2022 on DeFox Records, from which
"Despair" is taken. Saxon style and energy abound. With Wyv85, we're witnessing the reunion of the
original lineup of Wyvern, another historic formation from Parma in the early
1980s. "Save Humanity" is taken from their latest EP and showcases a
Hard Rock band rich in experience and never tamed by past sounds. Fabio
Bonaccorsi (vocals) leads the track with wisdom and awareness. We're back in Veneto with one of the genre's historic
voices, Gianni Bardotti, and his current project Jan-Os. This formation can be
considered a supergroup, made up of musicians from the Rock scene in the Padua,
Vicenza, Rovigo, and Verona areas. "Treaths" oozes Rock from every
pore with determination and wisdom. More recent are Kross Of Khaoss, formed in 2012 in
Treviso, dedicated to a raw and explosive sound thanks to the fusion of genres
like Punk, Speed Metal, and Blues. "The Dark Passenger" is the title
of their debut EP, released in 2015. The track proposed in the compilation is
"Snow White", which embodies the essence of this formation, which has
earned respect over time, especially in live performances, sharing the stage with
great artists like Anvil, Nanowar Of Steel, and many others. It's the turn of Carillon, a project led by drummer
Loris Rigoni with "Perduti Orgogli". Formed in 2013, they released
"Rumore E Silenzio" (Andromeda Relix) in 2018, an album that brought
them to the attention of the public and critics, leading to their participation
in the 2021 and 2022 editions of Sanremo Rock. The track proposed here features
a duo attentive to research and catchy melodies. Good vocals by Veronese singer
Patty Simon. With Serena Rock Band, we're in the presence of
another Italian historic artist, Franco Serena (Ragazzi Dai Capelli Verdi,
Nuvole Di Paglia). Active since 1964, Serena has passed through Beat and
Progressive Rock. "Soli" is a chapter that showcases his Rock side,
from which his years of experience shine through. "Roccaccio Vol. 1" also features a
multifaceted artist who works with words, guitar, and experimentation, Lele
Croce. Throughout his career, he has received several awards, including the
"Primo Traguardo" in Milan, "Musica Libera" in Rome, and
"Ritmi Globali Europei" in Treviso. "Libertad" is a catchy
track infused with Blues and Southern Rock, truly enjoyable. Another standout name in this compilation is X-Hero,
an Heavy Metal band that returns today with the album "Evil Union"
(DeFox Records / Heart Of Steel Records). The founder and lead singer, Mirko
Defox Galliazzo, is the author of an excellent, over-the-top performance
immersed in direct Metal Prog; the proposed track is "All Universe". We take a breather with Runaluna, who propose a
touching ballad titled "Luminescence". This could also be considered
a supergroup, with members from bands like X-Hero, Blondie Fox, Tactusrosa, and
Giga From Nowhere. The elegance of the Rock proposed here borders on Progressive
Rock and the 1980s scenario. The track, written by keyboardist and bassist
Sandro Benetti, is a sonic pearl. The collection concludes with the electronic sounds of
PC-Newton, who have fun with "Fuck The Virus", a track that recalls
"Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen. The moniker is taken from the
1976 film by Nicolas Roeg starring David Bowie. Intergalactic
travels and great guitar insights. What intrigues me most after this long ride through
Italian Rock music is the "Vol. 1" that makes me hope for a sequel.
"Roccaccio Vol. 1" is an opportunity for those who might have missed
the underground scene; Mirco DeFox Galliazzo has had an illuminating intuition,
and we're grateful to him. MS
