I Soen sono emersi nel 2010 come una sorta di "supergruppo" d'élite, inizialmente noti per la presenza del leggendario batterista Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) e del bassista Steve Di Giorgio. La loro evoluzione storica è stata un viaggio affascinante: partiti con il debutto “Cognitive” (2012), sono stati spesso etichettati come cloni dei Tool, un paragone che hanno poi smantellato disco dopo disco. Con il passare degli anni e l'ingresso del chitarrista Cody Ford, la band ha raffinato un sound unico che fonde la potenza del Metal Progressivo con una sensibilità melodica quasi introspettiva, guidata dalla voce vellutata e intensa di Joel Ekelöf.
“Reliance” è il settimo sigillo dei Soen, uscito il 16 gennaio 2026, e rappresenta un punto di arrivo cruciale per la band svedese. Storicamente, il gruppo è passato attraverso una metamorfosi straordinaria, partendo dalle radici Prog-Metal intricate dei primi anni 2010 per approdare oggi a un suono che è pura "essenza": brani più compatti, quasi tutti sotto i cinque minuti, ma carichi di una tensione emotiva che pochi altri sanno gestire.
In questo lavoro, la formazione composta dal nucleo storico Martin Lopez e Joel Ekelöf, insieme a Cody Ford, Stefan Stenberg e Lars Enok Åhlund, perfeziona la formula già esplorata in “Memorial” (2023), spingendosi però verso una produzione ancora più nitida e dinamica curata da Alexander Backlund. L'album si apre con la potenza di "Primal", un pezzo che mette subito in chiaro l'intento del disco: riff pesanti e sincopati che si risolvono in ritornelli di una bellezza melodica disarmante, dove Ekelöf dimostra di essere una delle voci più mature del panorama Rock contemporaneo.
Brani come "Mercenary" e "Discordia" affrontano temi sociali e psicologici complessi, parlando di tradimento, corruzione e della lotta per restare umani in un mondo digitale che ci vorrebbe divisi, mentre pezzi come "Indifferent" mostrano il lato più vulnerabile e spogliato della band, affidandosi a pianoforte e interpretazioni quasi confessionali.
La sezione ritmica di Lopez resta il cuore pulsante, capace di rendere "facili" tempi dispari e incastri che altrove risulterebbero ostici, mentre Cody Ford regala assoli che non cercano mai la velocità fine a se stessa, ma preferiscono il feeling "gilmouriano", come si avverte chiaramente nella splendida chiusura di "Vellichor".
Sebbene alcuni fan della prima ora possano lamentare l'abbandono delle strutture lunghe e labirintiche di “Cognitive”, “Reliance” è la testimonianza di una band che ha trovato la fiducia (appunto, la "reliance") totale nei propri mezzi espressivi, scegliendo la qualità del messaggio e l'impatto emotivo diretto sopra ogni virtuosismo superfluo.
È un disco che non inventa nuovi generi, ma che nobilita l'Heavy Rock moderno portandolo a una dimensione poetica e catartica raramente raggiunta dai loro colleghi. MS

Soen emerged in 2010 as a sort of elite "supergroup," initially known for the presence of legendary drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) and bassist Steve Di Giorgio. Their historical evolution has been a fascinating journey: starting with their debut “Cognitive” (2012), they were often labeled as Tool clones—a comparison they dismantled album after album. Over the years, and with the addition of guitarist Cody Ford, the band has refined a unique sound that blends the power of Progressive Metal with an almost introspective melodic sensitivity, guided by the velvety and intense vocals of Joel Ekelöf.
“Reliance” is Soen’s seventh seal, released on January 16, 2026, and represents a crucial milestone for the Swedish band. Historically, the group has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis, moving from the intricate Prog-Metal roots of the early 2010s to arrive today at a sound that is pure "essence": more compact tracks, nearly all under five minutes, yet charged with an emotional tension that few others can manage.
In this work, the lineup consisting of the core duo Martin Lopez and Joel Ekelöf, alongside Cody Ford, Stefan Stenberg, and Lars Enok Åhlund, perfects the formula already explored in “Memorial” (2023), while pushing toward an even sharper and more dynamic production handled by Alexander Backlund. The album opens with the power of "Primal," a track that immediately clarifies the record's intent: heavy, syncopated riffs that resolve into choruses of disarming melodic beauty, where Ekelöf proves to be one of the most mature voices in the contemporary Rock scene.
Tracks like "Mercenary" and "Discordia" tackle complex social and psychological themes, speaking of betrayal, corruption, and the struggle to remain human in a digital world that seeks to divide us, while pieces like "Indifferent" showcase the band's most vulnerable and stripped-back side, relying on piano and almost confessional performances.
Lopez's rhythm section remains the beating heart, capable of making odd time signatures and patterns that would be daunting elsewhere seem "easy," while Cody Ford delivers solos that never chase speed for its own sake, preferring a "Gilmouresque" feeling, as clearly heard in the splendid closing of "Vellichor."
Although some early fans might lament the abandonment of the long, labyrinthine structures of “Cognitive,” “Reliance” is a testament to a band that has found total confidence (indeed, "reliance") in its expressive means, choosing message quality and direct emotional impact over any superfluous virtuosity. It is a record that doesn't reinvent genres but ennobles modern Heavy Rock, elevating it to a poetic and cathartic dimension rarely reached by their peers. MS
