Non molto spesso, ma alcune nuove sorprese arrivano anche dall'Australia. Ambient Den è il progetto del polistrumentista Ben Craven, del tastierista e cantante Tim Bennetts (Seven Day Mask, Sub Inc) e del batterista Dean Povey (Frankenfido). Tim incontra Ben nel 2017 e, dopo un paio di jam informali, decidono di mettere in piedi questo progetto dedicato a band del passato come Yes, Genesis e Pink Floyd, con annesse tematiche fantascientifiche.
Il nome Ambient Den è in realtà un anagramma di "Tim", "Ben" e "Dean", sebbene Tim e Ben si fossero originariamente esibiti con il nome Progaustrali.
“Ambient Den” è un concept album con la copertina disegnata da Dean Povey, che racconta la storia della ricerca dell'umanità di una nuova casa tra le stelle, la quale culmina nella creazione di un nuovo mondo lontano e abitabile.
Si inizia con “Future History Part 1”, l'intro in stile Pink Floyd che conduce a “For All Mankind”, otto minuti in cui le tastiere descrivono ambientazioni ariose e spaziali in cui la band esprime sensazioni sia passate che odierne. La cura per le melodie orecchiabili è marcata, a vantaggio di un ascolto fruibile, specialmente durante il ritornello. Le fughe strumentali mostrano tre artisti preparati, impegnati in assolo tecnici mai prolissi. Il suono è avvolgente, supportato da arrangiamenti ben congeniati.
La strumentale “Provenance” alza il tiro e prosegue il viaggio cosmico attraverso arie ancor più marcatamente in stile Pink Floyd ultimo periodo, grazie alla chitarra elettrica di Craven, vera e propria protagonista.
“Earthrise” è una mini suite di nove minuti abbondanti dove ancora una volta la chitarra slide arricchisce le atmosfere in maniera marcata. All’orizzonte la terra, e quando inizia il solo di chitarra acustica diventa tutto pura magia.
“Terraforming” mette sul piatto tutte le armi a disposizione della band, attraverso sedici minuti di intrigante Crossover Prog in cui l’animo è coinvolto in un'altalena di emozioni. Se amate David Gilmour, gli Ambient Den sanno come coccolarvi. Cambi umorali e di ritmo, frangenti epici si alternano a passaggi psichedelici di tastiere e chitarra slide in modalità “One Of These Days” per un risultato che annovero fra i più gradevoli dell’intero album.
“Future History Part 2” alza il ritmo e chiude l’album, mentre i seguenti altri quattro brani non sono altro che i single edit di “For All Mankind”, “Earthrise”, “Terraforming” e “Future History Part 2”.
In conclusione, “Ambient Den” è un album gradevolissimo, ricco di bei spunti sonori in cui il passato è ricercato ma esposto con un abito moderno, dove basta chiudere gli occhi per lasciarsi trasportare in luoghi mai visti, per la gioia di chi ama ascoltare la musica… quella vera. MS

Not very often, but some new surprises come from faraway Australia. Ambient Den is the project of multi-instrumentalist Ben Craven, keyboardist and vocalist Tim Bennetts (Seven Day Mask, Sub Inc) and drummer Dean Povey (Frankenfido). Tim met Ben in 2017 and, after a couple of informal jam sessions, they decided to start this project dedicated to bands of the past like Yes, Genesis, and Pink Floyd, with related science fiction themes.
The name Ambient Den is actually an anagram of "Tim", "Ben", and "Dean", although Tim and Ben originally performed under the name Progaustrali.
“Ambient Den” is a concept album with a cover designed by Dean Povey, which tells the story of humanity's search for a new home among the stars, culminating in the creation of a new, distant, and habitable world.
It starts with “Future History Part 1”, the Pink Floyd-style intro that leads to “For All Mankind”, an eight-minute track where the keyboards describe airy and spatial settings in which the band expresses both past and present feelings. The care for catchy melodies is marked, to the advantage of an enjoyable listening experience, especially during the chorus. The instrumental passages show three prepared artists, engaged in technical solos that are never too long. The sound is enveloping, supported by well-crafted arrangements.
The instrumental track “Provenance” raises the bar and continues the cosmic journey through even more markedly Pink Floyd-style late-period sounds, thanks to Craven's electric guitar, which is the real protagonist.
“Earthrise” is a mini-suite of over nine minutes where the slide guitar once again enriches the atmospheres in a marked way. The Earth is on the horizon, and when the acoustic guitar solo starts, it becomes pure magic.
“Terraforming” brings out all the band's arsenal, through sixteen minutes of intriguing Crossover Prog where the soul is involved in an emotional rollercoaster. If you love David Gilmour, Ambient Den knows how to pamper you. Mood and rhythm changes, epic moments alternate with psychedelic passages of keyboards and slide guitar in “One Of These Days” mode, for a result that I rank among the most enjoyable of the entire album. “Future History Part 2” raises the pace and closes the album, while the following four tracks are just single edits of “For All Mankind”, “Earthrise”, “Terraforming”, and “Future History Part 2”.
In conclusion, “Ambient Den” is a very enjoyable album, rich in beautiful sound ideas where the past is researched but presented with a modern twist, where you just need to close your eyes to let yourself be transported to unseen places, for the joy of those who love listening to music… the real one.
