Nella musica c’è da fare un distinguo, perché c’è chi la fa e chi la vive. Quest’ultima categoria è la più rara; in genere, è quella che affonda le radici nel passato, soprattutto nel periodo degli anni ’70. Incuranti delle mode, delle tendenze, degli atteggiamenti da palco e di tutto quello che fa parte del carrozzone dell’industria musicale, gli artisti “veri”, o se vogliamo “ruspanti”, sembrano inattaccabili e immortali. Ma attenzione, con questo non voglio dire che la categoria sia indifferente a ciò che la circonda, questi artisti sono anche presi nel sociale e sempre attenti a quello che accade attorno a loro nella quotidianità.
Il preambolo serve semplicemente a esternare che la musica è fonte di vita, intesa come sensazioni, esperienze, idee e personalità messe in note, quindi non solo canzoncine o motivo assoluto di vendita (per carità, rispettabili anche queste, altrimenti la musica non sarebbe anche un lavoro).
La propria terra ricopre un altro ruolo importante in questa tendenza, il Folk si può innestare nel Jazz, nel Rock e in qualsiasi altro genere ed espressione musicale, impreziosendone l’ascolto.
Nel mio girovagare indipendente e “progressivo”, alla ricerca sempre di nuove sensazioni, mi imbatto in questo progetto proposto da Gianni Pieri (violoncello, Basscello e Loop Station) e Mauro Di Rienzo (batteria). I due artisti si conoscono e collaborano assieme da oltre vent’anni e hanno militato nella formazione romana di Etno Folk, A Sud Di Nogales, sin dai primi anni ’90.
Suoni minimali si mettono a disposizione della musica e anche della formula canzone, a testimonianza di un vagare strutturale e sonoro di certo non scontato. Con un violoncello e una batteria si possono fare molte cose, non sembra ma questo lo si evince già dall’iniziale “Fermate Gli Orologi” e si denota uno spiccato senso per l’armonia. “Vento Caldo E Pioggia A Busso” rappresenta il lato più mediterraneo del disco, mentre “Tacchi A Spillo E Sberleffi”, come preannuncia il titolo, è giocosa, spensierata e goliardica. “Sulle Ali Di Un Sogno” presenta un violoncello che si sostituisce propriamente a una teorica voce, canzone molto bella sulla quale si potrebbero benissimo adattare immagini o danze. Si evincono giri che militano nel classicismo in una sorta di Rondò Veneziano e ben si accostano alla formula canzone.
L’intesa fra i due è pressoché perfetta; i dettagli e le virgole che Di Rienzo disegna sotto al tappeto di corde sono importanti e ricolmi di sensibilità. Ascoltate “Melodica” e cosa racconta sotto al violoncello basso di Pieri. “La Canzone Sociale” è uno stato d’animo sentito e profondo, mentre il lato più ricercato e sperimentale del duo fuoriesce nel brano “Passeggiando Controcorrente”, grazie anche ai loop percussionistici.
Non esula la musica popolare, che fa capolino fra le composizioni variegate, come in “Tarancellopoli Bis”. Ariosa e solare “Volteggiando Nell’Aria”; titolo più appropriato non poteva avere. Sale il ritmo nella “Tribal Song”, così la voglia di ricercare sonorità e nuove strutture musicali. Come nella poesia ermetica di Ungaretti, in “Sulle Corde Del Vento” si riesce a rappresentare il concetto con poche note e si ha proprio la sensazione di essere liberi e trasportati dal vento. Torna la formula canzone ne “Il Serpente Che Ride”, questa potrebbe benissimo risiedere nella colonna sonora del telefilm “Pinocchio” di Luigi Comencini, tanto per rendere l’idea del contesto sonoro. Libera metrica ancora una volta per “ABC – Prima O Poi”, sfogo umorale e stilistico di Pieri che accompagna alla conclusiva “Potere Fare Tutto”, orecchiabile e degna di sottolineatura.
“Drum ‘n Cello” è un disco che ci mette in pace con il mondo e con noi stessi, il vibrato dei suoni caldi è un lasciarsi coccolare che non sempre accade oggi, in questo mondo sonoro fatto di nervi e di elettricità. In music, a distinction must be made, because there are those who make it and those who live it. The latter category is the rarest; it generally has its roots in the past, especially in the 1970s. Unconcerned with fads, trends, stage attitudes, and everything that is part of the music industry's machinery, "true" artists, or if you will, "unpretentious" ones, seem untouchable and immortal. But beware, this doesn't mean that the category is indifferent to its surroundings; these artists are also engaged in social issues and are always attentive to what happens around them in daily life.
This preamble simply serves to express that music is a source of life, understood as sensations, experiences, ideas, and personalities put into notes, not just catchy tunes or an absolute reason for sales (respectable as well, otherwise music wouldn't also be a job).
One's own land plays another important role in this trend; folk can be grafted onto jazz, rock, and any other musical genre and expression, enriching the listening experience.
In my independent and "progressive" wanderings, always in search of new sensations, I stumbled upon this project proposed by Gianni Pieri (cello, basscello, and loop station) and Mauro Di Rienzo (drums). The two artists know each other and have collaborated for over twenty years, having been part of the Roman ethno-folk formation A Sud Di Nogales since the early 1990s.
Minimal sounds are at the service of music and also of the song formula, testifying to a structural and sonic wandering that is certainly not obvious. With a cello and drums, many things can be done; it may not seem like it, but this is already evident in the initial "Fermate Gli Orologi" and denotes a marked sense of harmony. "Vento Caldo E Pioggia A Busso" represents the more Mediterranean side of the album, while "Tacchi A Spillo E Sberleffi", as the title suggests, is playful, carefree, and jocular. "Sulle Ali Di Un Sogno" features a cello that properly substitutes for a theoretical voice; it's a very beautiful song that could easily be accompanied by images or dance. There are hints of classicism in a sort of Rondò Veneziano that fit well with the song formula.
The understanding between the two is almost perfect; the details and nuances that Di Rienzo draws under the carpet of strings are important and full of sensitivity. Listen to "Melodica" and what it tells under Pieri's basscello. "La Canzone Sociale" is a felt and profound state of mind, while the more researched and experimental side of the duo emerges in the song "Passeggiando Controcorrente", thanks also to the percussive loops.
Folk music is not excluded, making an appearance among the varied compositions, as in "Tarancellopoli Bis". Airy and sunny "Volteggiando Nell'Aria"; it couldn't have a more fitting title. The rhythm picks up in "Tribal Song", along with the desire to search for new sonorities and musical structures. Like in Ungaretti's hermetic poetry, in "Sulle Corde Del Vento" the concept is represented with just a few notes, and one feels free and carried away by the wind. The song formula returns in "Il Serpente Che Ride", which could easily fit into the soundtrack of Luigi Comencini's TV series "Pinocchio", just to give an idea of the sonic context. Free meter again in "ABC – Prima O Poi", a humoral and stylistic outpouring by Pieri that accompanies the conclusive "Potere Fare Tutto", catchy and worthy of emphasis.
"Drum 'n Cello" is an album that puts us at peace with the world and with ourselves; the vibrato of warm sounds is a letting-go that doesn't always happen today, in this sonic world made of nerves and electricity. If you want to listen to good music, I recommend contacting these artists, as I did at giannipieri@alice.it, because sometimes in life, unintentionally, we stumble upon pleasant surprises. Enjoyable.
