DAVINPORT – The Great Awakening
Autoproduzione
Genere: Progressive Rock
Supporto: Digital / Bandcamp – 2026

MS

DAVINPORT – The Great Awakening
Self-released
Genre: Progressive Rock
Format: Digital / Bandcamp – 2026

Self-releases and one-man bands are gaining more and more ground in Prog music: this is the result of advancing technology that allows everyone to have a low-cost home studio, alongside the support of AI.
The results are not always optimal, because at the end of the day, what truly matters in music is emotion, in addition to good ideas. Making art is not for everyone: it takes talent and study, without which you get nowhere. However, with this system, record releases are increasing exponentially, and by the law of numbers, someone manages to produce a good piece of work.
This is also the case with Davinport, a synthwave/electronic/retrowave musical project created by British musician and producer Dave Johnson (a multi-instrumentalist also known for his work in the electronic/ambient field). The Davinport project was born as a sonic exploration combining retrowave, synth-pop, cinematic atmospheres, and Progressive nuances, characterized by the extensive use of analog and digital synthesizers, arpeggiators, and driving 80s-style rhythms.
Johnson took his first steps in the British underground scene, ranging from soundtrack production to atmospheric electronic music. Under the moniker Davinport, he chooses to focus on a very precise vision: combining 80s synthwave nostalgia (drawing influence from Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, and the modern retrowave scene in the style of Synth Collective / NRW) with complex, conceptual structures typical of narrative electronics.
The album, consisting of 10 tracks, is built around a dystopian, sci-fi, and spiritual concept: the story of a collective and individual awakening of humanity (the "Great Awakening") in the face of technological decline and the oppression of time, leading up to the search for personal transcendence.
“When Giants Awake” opens with emphasis and grandeur through a sound-rich instrumental, where the "giants" represent the dormant forces of human consciousness or the ancient structures of the world beginning to shake. The 80s lie straight ahead with bright, energetic synth melodies. This also occurs in “A New Dawning”, an agreeably catchy track accompanied by vocal parts. Here, the awakening marks the first dawn of a new post-crisis era. The song describes the sensation of emerging from darkness and seeing reality in a new light, with the music serving as a fine soundtrack thanks to its sense of positivity.
More intricate in its composition is “Future Perfect”, featuring arpeggios reminiscent of Genesis alongside shifting moods. This electronic suite explores futuristic utopia. The title plays on grammar and the concept of a "future perfect" promised by technology, while highlighting the fine line between utopia and total control. Keyboards, once again, take center stage.
“Victorius” represents the victory of the human spirit over the chains of homogenization and manipulation, doing so through an airy, sonically rich movement—almost in the vein of The Flower Kings—where the guitar manages to carve out a spotlight for itself.
At this point comes “New Beginnings”, a moment of pause and restart with a shorter, atmospheric track, serving almost as a reflective interlude. It recounts inner reconstruction: accepting the past in order to lay the foundations for a new life. This leads into the album’s longest track at nearly nine minutes, titled “Time Slips Away”. Here we are in refined, at times delicate Prog, where the awareness of mortality—and how life slips away while we are consumed by the illusions of the material world—is vividly portrayed through sound.
More traces of Genesis appear in “Monuments”: Johnson proves he knows the history of this music and knows how to shape it to his liking. Closing the album are “I Walk Alone”, “Telepathic Frequencies”, and “Night Runner”, further well-crafted compositions rich in pleasant sonorities.
Even though the retrowave framework might suggest just another stylistic exercise driven by typical 80s nostalgia, “The Great Awakening” reveals a far more complex and structured soul. Davinport delivers a mature work capable of combining the cinematic impact of synthesizers with a deep, never cliché conceptual architecture. We are not dealing with simple background listening for a late-night drive, but with a genuine track-by-track narrative journey, where electronic music returns to being conceptual, dreamlike matter. A lucid, enveloping album, highly recommended for anyone seeking a third dimension of listening within synthwave. MS
