Il connubio Metal Progressive e Neo Prog è epico, rilascia sonorità enfatiche e ricche di patos, bene lo sanno i friulani Blacksmith Tales.
Nascono negli anni '90 come progetto concettuale e compositivo guidato dal tastierista, pianista e compositore David Del Fabro. Fin dalle origini, la band ha orientato la propria ricerca verso un Rock Progressivo sinfonico e teatrale, ricco di stratificazioni sonore (con un forte accento sull'uso di tastiere vintage come Hammond, Minimoog e Mellotron), contaminato da venature Prog Metal, citazioni Folk ed elementi etnici.
Dopo la maturazione del materiale e la pubblicazione dell'ambizioso concept d'esordio “The Dark Presence” (2021), la formazione si è consolidata e affinata nell'attività dal vivo, arrivando a questa release che ne testimonia sia la continua evoluzione in studio che la forza espressiva sul palcoscenico. La lineup attuale vede David Del Fabro (pianoforte e tastiere),  Luca Zanon (tastiere e pianoforte), Stefano Sbrignadello (voce principale),  Beatrice Demori (voce), Marco Falanga  (chitarre e basso), Simone Morettin (batteria) e Alessandro Jacobi  (basso nelle sessioni live).
Il lavoro si divide idealmente e strutturalmente in due parti distinte ma complementari, ossia la nuova opera in studio, la mastodontica “Dark Ages Suite”, e una selezione Live in Roma registrata durante il prestigioso concerto di apertura alla Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) del 30 dicembre 2024.
La suite di venti minuti “Dark Ages Suite” è in apertura e si muove sul solco della grande tradizione del Prog epico caro a Clive Nolan e anche ai suoi Arena. Inizia con un'atmosfera sospesa e d'ambiente, guidata da intrecci di pianoforte, moog e tastiere, per poi aprirsi a fughe sinfoniche dal respiro barocco, cambi di tempo serrati e improvvise accelerazioni chitarristiche. L'uso delle due voci (maschile e femminile) intrecciate crea una spiccata drammaturgia sonora. La band dimostra di essere in grande forma! Il nucleo concettuale ruota attorno all'intima alienazione e al disorientamento dell'uomo contemporaneo. L' "Età Oscura" (Dark Ages) non è solo un riferimento storico, ma una metafora del presente, una società ipertecnologica ma priva di coordinate spirituali, in cui l'individuo cerca una via di fuga dall'oscurità interiore e sociale.
I brani dal vivo catturano l'energia della band su uno dei palchi più importanti della capitale, proponendo rivisitazioni energiche del loro repertorio ad iniziare da “Hamlet's Mill Overture”, pezzo strumentale  ad alto impatto. Tappeti di sinth, riff di chitarra elettrica in evidenza e una sezione ritmica dinamica introducono lo spettatore nello show con un sapore nettamente sinfonico e marziale come solo il Metal Prog sa fare.
Ottimamente registrato, il live prosegue con “Key To The Temple”, traccia caratterizzata da un riffing più deciso e da un incedere vicino al Prog Metal sinfonico, bilanciato da aperture melodiche guidate dal pianoforte e da cori vocali avvolgenti. Ottima padronanza vocale dal vivo da parte di Stefano Sbrignadello. Il testo affronta la ricerca della conoscenza profonda e la soglia simbolica (la chiave del tempio) che l'uomo deve varcare per accedere a una consapevolezza superiore, superando i propri limiti dogmatici.
Giunge ora una canzone cantata in italiano, “C’è Casa A 30 Miglia”, episodio che mostra il lato più intimista e cantautoriale della band, dove la componente Prog incontra la tradizione del Rock Progressivo Italiano anni '70. Arrangiamento dominato dal pianoforte, con un crescendo emotivo guidato dalla chitarra solista. Esso tratta il tema del ritorno, della distanza e del valore della propria terra d'origine o di un rifugio affettivo verso cui convergere nei momenti di smarrimento.
A questo punto  è la volta di un estratto riarrangiato della suite “Possessed By Time” presente sul primo disco. Dal vivo acquista grande immediatezza attraverso il dialogo tra organo Hammond e chitarra con continui saliscendi dinamici, fino al delicato controcanto vocale femminile. E’ un momento che mette in luce anche il lato Folk della band.
Il finale di concerto con “Dance Of The Stars” è travolgente e festoso. Struttura ritmica complessa con tempi dispari che si intrecciano a trame di tastiere vintage e a un assolo di chitarra di grande liricità.
In conclusione, “Dark Ages Suite & Live in Roma” si conferma un’opera matura e sfaccettata, capace di bilanciare la drammaturgia complessa della composizione in studio con la freschezza e la potenza espressiva della dimensione live. I Blacksmith Tales dimostrano non solo di saper maneggiare con rara maestria il linguaggio del Progressive Rock sinfonico, ma di saperlo plasmare con sensibilità. Un ascolto imprescindibile per chiunque cerchi nel Prog contemporaneo qualcosa che vada ben oltre la semplice perizia tecnica. MS

The combination of Progressive Metal and Neo Prog is epic, releasing emphatic sounds rich in pathos, as the Friulian band Blacksmith Tales well know.
They were formed in the 1990s as a conceptual and compositional project led by keyboardist, pianist, and composer David Del Fabro. Since their origins, the band has oriented their research toward a symphonic and theatrical Progressive Rock, rich in sonic layering (with a strong emphasis on the use of vintage keyboards such as Hammond, Minimoog, and Mellotron), cross-pollinated by Prog Metal nuances, Folk references, and ethnic elements.
After the maturation of their material and the release of their ambitious debut concept album “The Dark Presence” (2021), the lineup consolidated and refined itself through live performance, leading to this release which bears witness to both their continuous studio evolution and their expressive power on stage. The current lineup features David Del Fabro (piano and keyboards), Luca Zanon (keyboards and piano), Stefano Sbrignadello (lead vocals), Beatrice Demori (vocals), Marco Falanga (guitars and bass), Simone Morettin (drums), and Alessandro Jacobi (bass in live sessions).
The work is ideally and structurally divided into two distinct yet complementary parts: namely the new studio work, the mammoth “Dark Ages Suite”, and a Live in Roma selection recorded during their prestigious opening performance for Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) on December 30, 2024.
The twenty-minute suite “Dark Ages Suite” opens the record and moves along the lines of the great epic Prog tradition dear to Clive Nolan and his band Arena. It begins with a suspended, ambient atmosphere led by interwoven piano, Moog, and keyboards, before opening up into symphonic fugues with a baroque breath, tight time changes, and sudden guitar accelerations. The use of two interwoven voices (male and female) creates a striking sonic drama. The band proves to be in great form! The conceptual core revolves around the intimate alienation and disorientation of contemporary man. The "Dark Ages" is not merely a historical reference, but a metaphor for the present—a hyper-technological society devoid of spiritual coordinates, in which the individual seeks an escape route from inner and social darkness.
The live tracks capture the band's energy on one of the capital's most important stages, offering energetic reinterpretations of their repertoire, starting with “Hamlet's Mill Overture”, a high-impact instrumental track. Synth pads, prominent electric guitar riffs, and a dynamic rhythm section introduce the listener to the show with a distinctly symphonic and martial flavor as only Prog Metal can deliver.
Excellently recorded, the live performance continues with “Key To The Temple”, a track characterized by more decisive riffing and a pace close to symphonic Prog Metal, balanced by melodic openings led by the piano and enveloping vocal harmonies. Excellent live vocal mastery by Stefano Sbrignadello. The lyrics address the search for deep knowledge and the symbolic threshold (the key to the temple) that man must cross to access a higher awareness, overcoming his own dogmatic limits.
Now comes a song sung in Italian, “C’è Casa A 30 Miglia”, an episode that shows the band's more intimate, singer-songwriter side, where the Prog component meets the tradition of 1970s Italian Progressive Rock. An arrangement dominated by the piano, featuring an emotional crescendo led by the lead guitar. It deals with the theme of return, distance, and the value of one's homeland or emotional sanctuary to converge upon during moments of bewilderment.
At this point, it is time for a rearranged excerpt of the suite “Possessed By Time”, originally featured on their first album. Live, it gains great immediacy through the dialogue between Hammond organ and guitar with continuous dynamic rises and falls, up to the delicate female vocal counterpoint. It is a moment that also highlights the band's Folk side.
The concert finale with “Dance Of The Stars” is overwhelming and festive. A complex rhythmic structure with odd time signatures weaves together vintage keyboard textures and a lyrical guitar solo.
In conclusion, “Dark Ages Suite & Live in Roma” proves to be a mature and multifaceted work, capable of balancing the complex drama of studio composition with the freshness and expressive power of the live dimension. Blacksmith Tales demonstrate not only that they can handle the language of symphonic Progressive Rock with rare mastery, but also that they know how to shape it with sensitivity. An essential listen for anyone seeking something in contemporary Prog that goes far beyond simple technical skill. MS
