Non è la prima volta che mi trovo a descrivere le capacità artistiche della band romana Karmamoi, altro tassello del puzzle che compone il quadro della buona musica italiana. Daniele Giovannoni (batteria, tastiere, cori) è l’ideatore del progetto che vede prendere forma nell’ormai lontano 2008 con l’allora cantante Serena Ciacci.
Propongono una musica raffinata dedita a sonorità miste fra la Psichedelia e il Progressive Rock, come nel tempo hanno insegnato artisti del calibro di Porcupine Tree, Radiohead e Pink Floyd. Abbastanza nutrita la discografia negli anni, a iniziare dal 2011 quando esordiscono con l’album “Karmamoi” (Crisalide). Già in quel caso s’intuirono le buone potenzialità della band e un carattere in via di forgiatura. Seguono EP e altri quattro album in studio in crescendo qualitativo, l’ultimo del 2021 è intitolato “Room 101” ispirato a "1984" di George Orwel. Nel corso della loro carriera musicale si avvalgono d’importanti special guest come Colin Edwin al basso (ex Porcupine Tree) e Geoff Leigh al flauto (Steven Wilson).
La band subisce nel tempo molti cambi di formazione, sino a stabilizzarsi oggi con Daniele Giovannoni, Valerio Sgargi (voce, cori, tastiere), Alex Massari (chitarre) e Alessandro Cefalì (basso).
In quest’ultimo “Strings From The Edge Of Sound”, I Karmamoi propongono quattro brani nuovi e cinque tratti dai precedenti album nuovamente arrangiati e rivisitati con orchestra, per un totale di quasi settanta minuti di musica. L’edizione si presenta cartonata e l’artwork è a cura di Joel Barrios.
Il compito di aprire le danze spetta a “Black Hole Era”. Il cantato è effettuato in lingua inglese, la canzone è spolverata da un velo nostalgico, mentre la struttura è pressoché acustica con un crescendo finale d’effetto grazie soprattutto alla chitarra elettrica di Alex Massari, la quale si lancia in un assolo sostenuto sopra una ritmica curata nei particolari.
“Nashira” è una canzone tratta dall’album “Silence Between Sounds” del 2016, qui si possono apprezzare gli ottimi arrangiamenti per orchestra di Emilio Merone, i quali donano un valore aggiunto di notevole spessore. La canzone è articolata come un brano Prog desidera, altrettanto rilevante è l’influenza psichedelica dei Porcupine Tree fine anni ’90. Un gioiello sonoro.
“Take Me Home” è un altro pezzo arrangiato estratto dall’album “The Day Is Done” del 2018. Sono tutte canzoni che lanciano la fantasia dell’ascoltatore nello spazio infinito.
“Tell Me” è un inedito che mostra la band in ottime condizioni fisiche e mentali, un morbido aleggiare fra arpeggi e voci curate nelle coralità di sostegno.
“Room 101” è tratta dall’album omonimo dell’anno 2021, Il Rock dal sapore anni ’70 vicino al mondo dei Genesis di Peter Gabriel, si sinfonizza grazie all’intervento degli archi, un mix equilibrato fra passato e presente, l’evoluzione di un genere in poche note.
Un altro movimento lento arriva dall’inedita “I Will Come In Your Dreams”, pianistica e delicata. La voce è degna interprete delle atmosfere rilasciate le quali si arricchiscono strada facendo di altre strumentazioni, archi compresi.
“Your Name” facente parte del disco “The Days Is Done”, ha il punto di forza nel refrain di facile memorizzazione oltre che nella ritmica più decisa.
“Zealous Man” dell’album “Room 101” ha un arrangiamento incisivo, mentre la conclusiva “Strings From The Edge Of Sound” è un inedito che spoilera lo stato di salute attuale dalla band. Consiglio l’acquisto di “Strings From The Edge Of Sound” a tutti quelli che fanno della musica un momento di relax per viaggiare in alto con la mente… Molto in alto. MS

This is not the first time I find myself describing the artistic abilities of the Roman band Karmamoi, another piece of the puzzle that makes up the picture of good Italian music. Daniele Giovannoni (drums, keyboards, backing vocals) is the creator of the project that sees take shape in the now distant 2008 with the then singer Serena Ciacci.They offer a refined music devoted to mixed sounds between Psychedelia and Progressive Rock, as over time have taught the likes of Porcupine Tree, Radiohead and Pink Floyd. Quite extensive discography over the years, starting in 2011 when they debuted with the album "Karmamoi" (Chrysalis). Already there they sensed the band's good potential and a character being forged. EPs and four more studio albums followed in qualitative crescendo, the last one in 2021 being titled "Room 101" inspired by George Orwel's "1984." In the course of their musical career they make use of important special guests such as Colin Edwin on bass (former Porcupine Tree) and Geoff Leigh on flute (Steven Wilson).The band undergoes many lineup changes over time, until stabilizing today with Daniele Giovannoni, Valerio Sgargi (vocals, backing vocals, keyboards), Alex Massari (guitars) and Alessandro Cefalì (bass).
In this latest "Strings From The Edge Of Sound," The Karmamoi offer four new tracks and five from previous albums re-arranged and revisited with orchestra, for a total of almost seventy minutes of music. The edition comes in hardback and the artwork is by Joel Barrios.
The task of opening the dances falls to "Black Hole Era." The singing is carried out in English, the song is dusted with a nostalgic veil, while the structure is almost acoustic with an impressive final crescendo thanks mainly to Alex Massari's electric guitar, which launches into a sustained solo over a carefully crafted rhythmic beat.
"Nashira" is a song from the 2016 album "Silence Between Sounds," here one can appreciate the excellent orchestral arrangements by Emilio Merone, which add considerable value. The song is articulated as a Prog song desires, equally relevant is the psychedelic influence of late 90s Porcupine Tree. A sonic gem.
"Take Me Home" is another arranged piece taken from the 2018 album "The Day Is Done." These are all songs that launch the listener's imagination into infinite space.
"Tell Me" is an unreleased track that shows the band in excellent physical and mental condition, a soft hovering between arpeggios and curated vocals in backing choruses.
"Room 101" is from the album of the same name from the year 2021, Rock with a 70s flavor close to the world of Peter Gabriel's Genesis, symphonizes thanks to the intervention of strings, a balanced mix of past and present, the evolution of a genre in a few notes.
Another slow movement comes from the unreleased "I Will Come In Your Dreams," pianistic and delicate. The vocals are worthy interpreters of the released atmospheres which are enriched as they go with other instrumentation, including strings.
"Your Name" part of the album "The Days Is Done," has its strong point in the easy-to-memorize refrain as well as in the stronger rhythm.
"Zealous Man" from the album "Room 101" has an incisive arrangement, while the concluding "Strings From The Edge Of Sound" is an unreleased track that spoils the current state of health from the band. I recommend the purchase of "Strings From The Edge Of Sound" to anyone who makes music a relaxing moment to travel high in the mind ... Very high. MS
