Nel mio immaginario mentale il Canada per la musica Progressiva lo associo alla città di Genova, tanta creatività e varietà di artisti concentrati in un solo luogo. In effetti, negli anni ’70 a Zena ne sono usciti di gruppi, per fare solo due nomi i New Trolls e Garybaldi. Il Canada riesce a stupirmi per freschezza, ispirati magari da altri grandi classici, gli artisti in questione si sanno mettere in vetrina grazie ad una buona personalità, non a caso sono proprio i Rush a dare la stimolo alla nascita del Progressive Metal. Ce ne sarebbero di cose da raccontare, ma in una recensione non ritengo sia il caso, per cui vi presento la band Eye Of The Atlas (no, non è quella americana ma di Branford, Ontario) che esordisce con l’album dal titolo omonimo. Dieci anni sono serviti a Christopher Brown (voce, chitarre), Christopher Mulligan (basso), Richmond Wilkes (batteria, voce), Starsky Partridge (sintetizzatore, chitarre, voce) e Velvet Fularski (voce), per realizzare questo disco composto di ben ventuno tracce!  Da questo si può già intuire che l’obbiettivo non è la suite o l’essere logorroico durante un brano, bensì la diretta melodia facile da assimilare.
Lo stile si potrebbe ricondurre all’Alternative Rock, o come ho scritto nel mio ultimo libro per Arcana, al Post Prog Moderno. Immaginate di ascoltare gli Antimatter o degli Anathema più solari. Il cantato è molto simile a quello di Duncan Patterson, leggermente vibrato in alcuni momenti e molto intenso. Fra quiete e rabbia la musica s’incanala in un mix di sensazioni, mai un momento di stallo, suoni elettrici si quietano per lasciare il palco ad arpeggi. Ricerca anche nelle voci che anche effettate fanno da prezioso arrangiamento. Difficile trovare un momento migliore o uno peggiore, in quanto l’ascolto è mediamente fluido, se amate gli Anathema ad esempio resterete piacevolmente colpiti dall’intro di “Spark” o se preferite più vigore c’è “Soil” che da voce alle chitarre elettriche distorte. La ritmica è semplice come in effetti lo è questa musica e se devo proprio trovare una pecca forse ho sentita la mancanza di un vero assolo strumentale altamente emotivo, alcuni di voi già mi avranno etichettato come un vecchio ascoltatore, forse avranno ragione.
Musica mordi e fuggi, quella che al momento fa passare la fame e ritorna di li a poco proprio per mancanza di “grassi”, eppure è un bellissimo disco che mi sento di consigliare a tutti gli amanti del genere. Questo Canada… MS

In my mental imagination Canada for Progressive music I associate it with the city of Genoa, so much creativity and variety of artists concentrated in one place. In fact, in the 1970s there were bands coming out of Zena, to name just two, the New Trolls and Garybaldi. Canada manages to amaze me with freshness, inspired perhaps by other great classics, the artists in question know how to showcase themselves thanks to a good personality, not coincidentally it was Rush who provided the impetus for the birth of Progressive Metal. There would be more to tell, but in a review I don't think it is the case, so I introduce you to the band Eye Of The Atlas (no, it is not the American one but from Branford, Ontario) debuting with their self-titled album. It took Christopher Brown (vocals, guitars), Christopher Mulligan (bass), Richmond Wilkes (drums, vocals), Starsky Partridge (synthesizer, guitars, vocals), and Velvet Fularski (vocals) ten years to make this record consisting of no less than twenty-one tracks!  From this one can already guess that the goal is not the suite or being logorrheic during a song, but rather the straightforward melody that is easy to assimilate.
The style could be traced back to Alternative Rock, or as I wrote in my last book for Arcana, Modern Post Prog. Imagine listening to Antimatter or sunnier Anathema. The singing is very similar to Duncan Patterson's, slightly vibrato in some moments and very intense. Between stillness and anger the music channels in a mix of sensations, never a moment of stalemate, electric sounds quiet down to leave the stage to arpeggios. Research also in the vocals that also effected make a valuable arrangement. Hard to find a best or worst moment, as the listening is averagely smooth, if you love Anathema for example you will be pleasantly impressed by the intro of "Spark" or if you prefer more vigor there is "Soil" that gives voice to distorted electric guitars. The rhythmics are as simple as in fact this music is and if I really have to find a flaw maybe I felt the lack of a real instrumental highly emotional solo, some of you will already have labeled me as an old listener, maybe they will be right.
Bite-and-run music, the kind that at the moment makes one go hungry and comes back shortly just for lack of "fat," and yet it is a beautiful record that I feel like recommending to all lovers of the genre. This Canada... MS
