Resto felicemente colpito quando mi imbatto in artisti che ridonano voce al cantautorato verace, quello in stile Ivan Graziani, Edoardo Bennato, Rino Gaetano e altri ancora, perché negli ultimi anni le nuove mode hanno fatto dei cantautori tabula rasa. Raddoppia la contentezza quando noto che questi sono giovani e attenti alle lezioni del passato. Con una battuta sintetizzerei in “c’è vita sulla terra”!
Sì, questo vale anche per il Rock; insomma, la scena italica negli ultimi tempi regala sorprese e in tempi di IA non è cosa da poco. L’imputato in questione ha il nome d’arte di Nick The Freak ed è un chitarrista e compositore di Bari. Tuttavia non è proprio l’ultimo arrivato in questo panorama, in quanto militante nei Modaxì nel 2000 e attivo in alcune collaborazioni con Caparezza, oltre alle esperienze in giro per l’Europa con il R’n’R/Blues dei The Good Ole Boys e il progetto Ska/Reggae B.U.M. (Bari Upbeat Movement).
Nick The Freak vive la sua Bari, la respira, l’osserva e la tramuta in musica sin dal primo album “Il Disco Vecchio” del 2019. Il progetto prosegue oggi con “Il Rumore Della Città – Vol. 1 e Vol. 2”, di cui la prima parte è edita mentre la seconda vedrà luce nella primavera del 2026. Traspare il legame con la sua terra, ma anche la volontà di andare via dalla tossicità che la circonda. Ecco dunque il proferire di testi sagaci, per questo mi sono permesso di accostare l’autore a certi cantautori nominati in precedenza. Il Blues, come la storia insegna, nasce proprio dalla volontà di esprimere in un canto di poche note una situazione sociale non proprio agevole; questo modus operandi è conservato anche in alcuni dei brani proposti nell’album.
La formazione è composta da Nick The Freak (voce, chitarre, basso, synth, percussioni), Simone Martorana (chitarre, cori), Nicola De Liso (batteria), Valeria Quarto (cori) e Paolo Palmieri (synth).
E veniamo a “Il Rumore Della Città – Vol. 1”, che si apre con un bel Rockaccio ruvido, un mix proprio fra Bennato e Graziani intitolato “City Boy, Country Girl”, anche singolo di cui si realizza un video diretto da Alberto Fortunato. Esso racconta un’impossibile storia d’amore tra un ragazzo imprigionato dal cemento e dalle logiche cittadine e una ragazza che vive invece fuori dal centro urbano. Trascinante e godereccio.
Cambia lo scenario attraverso “Il Gelo”, più morbido anche se la chitarra elettrica sprigiona sempre la sua energia positiva. Funziona l’accompagnamento di tastiera in stile “Every Little Thing Is Gonna Be Alright” (Bob Marley).
Basso e batteria iniziano “Sogni”, brano cantato quasi in modalità rap, mentre il ritornello richiama gli italiani anni ’80, quelli elettrici. A metà del pezzo subentrano le tastiere a sconfinare nel Prog degli anni ’70.
“La città è tossica, non ne posso più” è il refrain del brano “Toxic City”, un grido di rabbia che lascia trapelare la voglia dell’autore di andarsene, ma sarà proprio così? Forse potrebbe essere un modo di esorcizzare la situazione… Chissà. Il ritmo è accalappiante ancora una volta, a tratti funky. Ed è la volta di “Quando Ti Deciderai”, altro movimento che vede nel ritornello il punto forte. Rock sincero e senza troppi fronzoli.
Chiude “You Look At Me”, altro esempio di chitarra elettrica alla Ivan Graziani. Massiccio e cadenzato, il brano si lascia ascoltare con piacere e resta quasi impossibile restare fermi durante l’ascolto.
La musica di Nick The Freak è diretta, scaltra, una vetrina di generi bene incastrati fra di loro. Come detto, i ritornelli sono sempre il punto di forza e tutto scorre via che è un piacere. Non resta che attendere il volume due di “Il Rumore Della Città”; sono sicuro che saprà farci godere un’altra volta. MS

I am happily impressed when I come across artists who give voice to authentic singer‑songwriting, in the style of Ivan Graziani, Edoardo Bennato, Rino Gaetano and others, because in recent years new trends have turned singer‑songwriters into a tabula rasa. The satisfaction doubles when I notice that these are young and attentive to the lessons of the past. In a nutshell, I would sum it up as “there is life on earth”!
Yes, this also applies to Rock; in short, the Italian scene has lately been delivering surprises, and in the age of AI it’s no small thing. The subject in question goes by the artistic name Nick The Freak and is a guitarist and composer from Bari. However, he is not exactly the newest face on the scene, having played in Modaxì in 2000 and collaborated with Caparezza, as well as touring Europe with The Good Ole Boys’ R’n’R/Blues and the Ska/Reggae project B.U.M. (Bari Upbeat Movement).
Nick The Freak lives his Bari, breathes it, observes it and turns it into music starting with his first album “Il Disco Vecchio” (2019). The project continues today with “Il Rumore Della Città – Vol. 1 and Vol. 2”, the first part already released while the second will see the light in spring 2026. The bond with his homeland is evident, as is the desire to escape the toxicity that surrounds it. Hence the witty lyrics, which is why I felt comfortable comparing the author to the singer‑songwriters mentioned earlier. Blues, as history teaches, is born from the desire to express a difficult social situation in a few notes; this approach is also preserved in some of the tracks on the album.
The lineup consists of Nick The Freak (vocals, guitars, bass, synth, percussion), Simone Martorana (guitar, backing vocals), Nicola De Liso (drums), Valeria Quarto (backing vocals) and Paolo Palmieri (synth).
Now we come to “Il Rumore Della Città – Vol. 1”, which opens with a rough rock track, a mix between Bennato and Graziani titled “City Boy, Country Girl”, also released as a single with a video directed by Alberto Fortunato. It tells an impossible love story between a boy trapped in concrete and city logic and a girl who lives outside the urban centre. Captivating and enjoyable.
The scene changes with “Il Gelo”, softer even though the electric guitar still releases its positive energy. The keyboard accompaniment works in the style of “Every Little Thing Is Gonna Be Alright” (Bob Marley).
Bass and drums start “Sogni”, a song sung almost in rap mode, while the chorus recalls the electric Italian ’80s. Mid‑song, keyboards drift into ’70s prog.
“The city is toxic, I can’t take it anymore” is the refrain of “Toxic City”, a shout of anger that reveals the author’s desire to leave, but will it really happen? Perhaps it’s a way of exorcising the situation… Who knows. The rhythm is captivating once again, with funky touches. Then comes “Quando Ti Deciderai”, another track whose chorus is the highlight. Honest rock without frills.
The album closes with “You Look At Me”, another example of electric guitar à la Ivan Graziani. Massive and rhythmic, the song is a pleasure to listen to and it’s almost impossible to stay still while listening.
Nick The Freak’s music is direct, sharp, a showcase of genres well‑interwoven with each other. As said, the choruses are always the strong point and everything flows pleasantly. We just have to wait for volume two of “Il Rumore Della Città”; I’m sure it will make us enjoy it again. MS
