Fra le band più importanti della nuova scena Progressiva italiana vanno annoverati i Prowlers del tastierista Alfio Costa.
Ne è passata d’acqua sotto i ponti dall’esordio “Morgana” del 1994, e con sei album in studio e un live, oggi i bergamaschi ritornano con “Orchidea” dopo numerose vicissitudini e defezioni. L’esperienza annosa che vede iniziare nel 1985, porta la band a realizzare nel tempo un crescendo qualitativo enorme, conquistando il pubblico e la critica disco dopo disco.  Nel 1998 subiscono un temporaneo stop per poi riformarsi nel 2010.
Le prime idee su “Orchidea” sono abbozzate nel 2018, ma sappiamo bene cosa è poi accaduto, fra pandemie, guerre (purtroppo ancora in atto) e quant’altro. Come se non bastasse, i Prowlers subiscono la prematura dipartita di Marco Premoli, bassista dal 1992 al 1995, oltre che l’abbandono di Stefano Piazzi, storico chitarrista e compositore di buona parte della musica contenuta in quest’album. Il musicista è sostituito da Fulvio Rizzoli, strumentista dal tocco maggiormente Rock.
Quindi oggi la formazione vede Laura Mombrini alla voce, cori e controcanti, Cristina Lucchini voce, cori e controcanti, Bobo Aiolfi al basso elettrico, Alfio Costa all’organo Hammond, pianoforte, piano Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Mellotron, Roli seaboard, seconda voce in “Non Sei Mai Andato Via”, Marco Freddi alla batteria e percussioni, e Fulvio Rizzoli alle chitarre.
Ci sono anche special guest, che rispondono ai nomi di Vincenzo Zitello (flauto, violoncello), Alda Bano (chitarra classica), Agnis (voce), e Anna Cavalli (voce e cori).
Con “Orchidea” la band non si lega a un vero e proprio concept, bensì spazia in argomentazioni varie fra storie di donne, magia, natura, vita e morte, oltre ad una simpatica dedica all’allunaggio del 1969. Non può mancare neppure un ricordo di Premoli con il brano “Non Sei Mai Andato Via”.
I brani contenuti nel disco sono sette, mentre la versione cd vede aggiunta la bonus track “Clorofilla” in versione elettrica.
L’album si apre proprio con la title track, e voci femminili circondano immediatamente la mente come in un psichedelico viaggio onirico. Sono le tastiere a farsi avanti per prime, apportando sensazioni eteree conducenti a “Universi Paralleli”, pezzo presente soltanto nelle versioni digitale e cd. Il movimento è ruggente, grazie alle chitarre elettriche ma anche al suono graffiante dell’Hammond di sfondo. Piacevole il cambio umorale contenuto all’interno di stampo Prog classico in modalità Orme e piccole puntate nel mondo dei Pink Floyd.
“Clorofilla” è piano e violoncello, una ballata con la bella voce di Cristina Lucchini. in cattedra. Da solo il brano vale il prezzo del disco. Alfio Costa è in possesso di ottima tecnica strumentale questa fuoriesce in tutte le composizioni, così tanti sembrano essere i suoi punti di riferimento stilistico, in realtà il tocco gode di buona personalità, ascoltate il brano “Il Bao D3lla Luna” e noterete cambi improvvisi a conferma di quanto detto. In “Bocche D’Ambra” gli anni ’70 sono fermamente presenti, godibili soprattutto nel frangente centrale del pezzo, dove la chitarra elettrica si lancia in un assolo in stile Pink Floyd, ampio e arioso. Il pezzo forte dell’intero album è racchiuso nei venti minuti di “Ultimo Viaggio”, un pirotecnico cammino fra melodie godibili e buoni strumentali.
Estremamente toccante “Non Sei Mai Andato Via”, altra piccola gemma di quest’album privo di momenti di stanca.
La musica dei Prowlers è bene rappresentata dalle loro copertine, generalmente fatte con disegni a tratti pastello, fra delicatezza e fermezza. Tanta storia all’interno ma anche freschezza, soprattutto ispirata dalla voce di Cristina Lucchini e composizioni che risultano piacevoli in armonie. Dategli un ascolto e scoprirete un nuovo mondo colorato, fra passato e presente.  MS

Among the most important bands of the new Italian Progressive scene must be counted keyboardist Alfio Costa's Prowlers.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since their 1994 debut "Morgana", and with six studio albums and a live show, today the Bergamasque band returns with "Orchidea" after numerous vicissitudes and defections. The long-standing experience, which sees them begin in 1985, leads the band to achieve a huge qualitative crescendo over time, winning over audiences and critics disc after disc.  In 1998 they suffered a temporary stop and then reformed in 2010.
The first ideas on "Orchidea" are sketched out in 2018, but we know what happened next, between pandemics, wars (unfortunately still going on) and whatnot. As if that were not enough, the Prowlers suffer the untimely departure of Marco Premoli, bassist from 1992 to 1995, as well as the departure of Stefano Piazzi, historical guitarist and composer of much of the music on this album. The musician is replaced by Fulvio Rizzoli, an instrumentalist with a more Rock touch.
So today's lineup features Laura Mombrini on vocals, backing vocals and backing vocals, Cristina Lucchini on vocals, backing vocals and backing vocals, Bobo Aiolfi on electric bass, Alfio Costa on Hammond organ, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Minimoog, Mellotron, Roli seaboard, second vocals in "Non Sei Mai Andato Via," Marco Freddi on drums and percussion, and Fulvio Rizzoli on guitars.
There are also special guests, who answer to the names of Vincenzo Zitello (flute, cello), Alda Bano (classical guitar), Agnis (vocals), and Anna Cavalli (vocals and backing vocals).
With "Orchidea", the band does not bind itself to a real concept, but ranges in various arguments between stories of women, magic, nature, life and death, as well as a nice dedication to the 1969 moon landing. A remembrance of Premoli cannot be missed either with the track "Non Sei Mai Andato Via".
There are seven tracks on the album, while the CD version sees the addition of the bonus track "Clorofilla" in an electric version.
The album opens right with the title track, and female vocals immediately surround the mind as if on a psychedelic dream journey. It is the keyboards that come forward first, bringing ethereal sensations leading to "Universi Paralleli," a piece present only in the digital and CD versions. The movement is roaring, thanks to the electric guitars but also to the scratchy sound of the Hammond in the background. Pleasant is the mood change contained within in the mold of classic Prog in the mode of Orme and small stakes in the world of Pink Floyd.
"Clorofilla" is piano and cello, a ballad with Cristina Lucchini' beautiful voice in the cathedra. The track alone is worth the price of the disc. Alfio Costa is in possession of excellent instrumental technique this comes out in all the compositions, so many seem to be his stylistic reference points, in fact the touch enjoys good personality, listen to the track "Il Ballo D3lla Luna" and you will notice sudden changes confirming what has been said.
In "Bocche D’Ambra”, the 1970s are firmly present, enjoyable especially in the central fringe of the piece, where the electric guitar launches into a Pink Floyd-style solo, broad and airy. The highlight of the entire album is encapsulated in the twenty-minute "Ultimo Viaggio", a pyrotechnic walk between enjoyable melodies and good instrumentals.
Extremely touching is "Non Sei Mai Andato Via”, another little gem on this album devoid of tired moments.
The Prowlers' music is well represented by their covers, generally done with pastel drawings, between delicacy and firmness. Lots of history inside but also freshness, especially inspired by Cristina Lucchini's voice and compositions that are pleasing in harmonies. Give it a listen and you will discover a colorful new world between past and present.  MS
