Quando m’imbatto in giovani cantautori dediti al Progressive Rock di questi tempi, non posso che essere contento. Sentiamo troppo spesso dire che oggi la musica non regala più nulla di nuovo, che gli X Factor hanno monopolizzato le menti, e via dicendo; ma per caso non è che saremo noi a non conoscere a fondo la scena? E qual è la scena odierna in campo Progressivo? Servirebbero pagine e pagine sull’argomento, per questo vi rimando al mio ultimo libro “Post Prog Moderno“ (Arcana) se siete curiosi su come la penso al riguardo. E’ senza dubbio inconfutabile l’influenza che Steven Wilson ha avuto negli ultimi anni, per la rabbia di molti “die hard” attaccati al buon vecchio Prog anni ’70 style.
Ma ricordiamoci che l’evoluzione prosegue con o senza la nostra volontà, non si può arrestare.
E quindi, secondo me, quando oggi un cantautore infarcisce la propria musica attraverso un equilibrio fra passato e presente, allora c’è di che ascoltare. Questo è un poco il sunto dell’arte del polistrumentista ventitreenne romano Simone Sangiorgio, in arte Dualismo Asintotico.
“Quel Mare Che E’ La Vita” è il secondo album dopo l’omonimo del 2020. Il singolo intitolato “Singolarità”, immerge immediatamente nel mondo di Sangiorgio attraverso coralità sovra incise, cambi umorali, chitarre alla Porcupine Tree e piccoli innesti di Prog vintage in stile Orme. Il brano di dieci minuti è sia spiazzante sia orecchiabile, tanto da indurre l’ascoltatore più curioso a ripremere il tasto play. Il brano “Quel Mare Che E’ La Vita” è una suite divisa in sei tracce a partire da “La Giovinezza”, ballata che si aggira su arpeggi di chitarra dal sentore passato, arrangiato molto bene grazie ad un uso di tastiere elegante, poi l’ingresso della chitarra elettrica fionda la mente nell’ ”albero del porcospino”. La cura per le coralità è ancora una volta elevata, vera caratteristica peculiare dello stile Dualismo Asintotico. Il capitolo “La Guerra” è maggiormente elettrico e spinge di più l’acceleratore mentre ancora una volta gli anni ’70, questa volta quelli di certi Trip, fanno capolino nel pentagramma. “E fu così” è ammaliante, suoni sospesi, aurei, etnici, metallici, un mix di sonorità ancora una volta non scontate spiazzano l’ascolto. La voce è buona interprete dei testi a loro volta intriganti. Il cantautorato si presenta in “L’Oblio”, quarto capitolo della suite. La chitarra elettrica spazia anche nel mondo della psichedelia.
Sentita dall’autore “La Melodia D’Amor” che lascia spazio all’ultima parte della suite intitolata “L’Epilogo”, effettata con registrazioni al contrario.
Ed è la volta degli otto minuti abbondanti di “Passaggio”, in un sound cosmico oltre che celestiale ispirato fortemente a quello dei Porcupine Tree degli anni ’90.
Per concludere un'altra mini suite intitolata “Falena”, un inno all’esistenza di questa bestiola notturna espresso fra metriche liriche particolari e un senso d’ironia che non manca di certo a questo giovane cantautore.
Dualismo Asintotico sta maturando, la consapevolezza si può respirare fra le note, Sangiorgio ha argomenti da trattare, sarei davvero curioso di vederlo alla prova con una vera e propria band alle spalle, sono certo che il risultato sarebbe ancor più piacevole. Un disco di carattere, una vetrina sulla cultura musicale dell’autore il quale non si nasconde dietro ad un dito, bensì si da in pasto sia agli appassionati del Prog che della formula canzone. When I come across young songwriters dedicated to Progressive Rock these days, I can't help but be pleased. We hear too often that today's music doesn't give anything new anymore, that the X Factors have monopolized minds, and so on and so forth; but isn't it by chance that we are the ones who don't know the scene thoroughly? And what is today's scene in the Progressive field? It would take pages and pages on the subject, so I refer you to my latest book “Modern Post Prog” (Arcana) if you are curious about how I feel about it. It is no doubt irrefutable the influence that Steven Wilson has had in recent years, to the anger of many “die hard” people attached to good old 70s style Prog.
But let us remember that evolution goes on with or without our will, it cannot be stopped.
And so, in my opinion, when a songwriter today infuses his music through a balance of past and present, then there is something to listen to. This is a little summary of the art of 23-year-old Roman multi-instrumentalist Simone Sangiorgio, aka Dualismo Asintotico.
“Quel Mare Che E' La Vita” is the second album after the self-titled 2020 release. The single titled “Singularity,” immediately immerses the listener in Sangiorgio's world through over-enunciated choruses, mood shifts, Porcupine Tree-esque guitars, and small grafts of vintage Orme-style prog. The ten-minute track is both unsettling and catchy, enough to prompt the most curious listener to repress the play button. The track “Quel Mare Che E' La Vita” is a suite divided into six tracks starting with “La Giovinezza”, a ballad that wanders over guitar arpeggios with a hint of the past, arranged very well thanks to an elegant use of keyboards, then the entrance of the electric guitar sends the mind into the Porcupine Tree. Attention to chorality is once again high, a true hallmark of the Asymptotic Dualism style. The chapter “La Guerra” is more electric and pushes the accelerator more while once again the 1970s, this time those of certain Trip, peep into the staff. “E Fu Così” is bewitching, suspended sounds, aural, ethnic, metallic, a mix of sounds once again not taken for granted disorient the listener. The vocals are good interpreters of lyrics that are in turn intriguing. Songwriting shows up in “L’Oblio”, the fourth chapter of the suite. The electric guitar also ranges into the world of psychedelia.
Heard by the author “La Melodia D'Amor”, which gives way to the last part of the suite entitled “L’Epilogo”, effected with reverse recordings.
And it's the turn of the eight-plus minutes of “Passaggio”, in a cosmic as well as celestial sound strongly inspired by that of Porcupine Tree of the 1990s.
To conclude another mini-suite entitled “Falena”, a hymn to the existence of this nocturnal beast expressed between peculiar lyrical metrics and a sense of irony that this young singer-songwriter certainly does not lack.
Dualism Asymptotic is maturing, awareness can be breathed among the notes, Sangiorgio has topics to deal with, I would be really curious to see him try his hand with a real band behind him, I am sure the result would be even more enjoyable. A record with character, a showcase on the musical culture of the author who does not hide behind a finger, but rather gives himself to both Prog and formula song fans. Double kudos. MS
