E’ fatto di cronaca costatare che anche nel 2024 il genere Neo Prog prosegue imperterrito il proprio cammino, in barba alle mode. Mi ricordo negli anni ’80 che la stampa di settore e critici vari, tacciava il genere di vita breve in quanto ritenuto clone inutile dei maestri degli anni ’70, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Camel e King Crimson su tutti. Nulla di più sbagliato, band come Arena, per fare un nome, ha riportato nuova linfa vitale al contesto, ma per i dettagli e gli approfondimenti al riguardo, vi rimando al mio terzo libro NEO PROG – STORIA E DISCOGRAFIA (Arcana).
Il Neo Prog ha un pubblico non numerosissimo ma fedele, forse anche questa è la chiave di lettura. Molte band seppur non famose, nel tempo hanno rilasciato lavori interessanti, sempre basati sulle tastiere e le chitarre in un mix fra Genesis, Camel e Pink Floyd.
Una formazione composta da elementi di varie nazioni e mediamente considerata si chiama Drifting Sun. Di base inglesi, il quintetto si è spesso autoprodotto nella lunga carriera che vede prendere forma a Chesham nel 1994 circa. Otto gli album in studio senza considerare EP e i numerosi singoli. Nel tempo si guadagnano non soltanto la stima del pubblico, ma anche dei musicisti stessi, tanto che durante le defezioni nella line up, si vedono oggi inserire dei strumentisti famosi nel circuito come ad esempio l’ex bassista dei IQ Jon Jowitt, e l’ex batterista dei Pendragon Fudge Smith. La band è completata da John 'Jargon' Kosmidis (voce), Ralph Cardall (chitarra, mandolino), e Pat Sanders (tastiere).
“Veil” è quindi il nuovo album formato da otto canzoni che vedono alternarsi ospiti come Suzi James al violino, e numerosi coristi. Lo stile è inequivocabilmente fedele alla linea, i nomi citati sono la conferma di quanto descritto.
L’opener s’intitola “Veiled”, fra piano e tastiere che girano attorno ad una nenia dal sapore antico, atmosfere care ai Pendragon e a tutti coloro che ci orbitano attorno. Il disco in realtà si apre con una mini suite di dodici minuti intitolata “Frailty”, qui la band si dimostra sin da subito coesa e con le idee chiarissime. I testi sono bene interpretati dalla voce di Kosmidis e sappiamo bene che il Neo Prog necessita sia di parti vocali sia di parti al limite del recitato, come Fish (Marillion), Alan Red (Pallas), e Peter Nicholls (IQ) ci hanno dimostrato e deliziato nei loro album. Ma i Drifting Sun fanno qualcosa in più, aggiungono coralità e arie complesse, tanto da far fare capolino anche ai maestri Yes. Ovviamente i cambi di tempo sono immancabili, così le parti pianistiche delicate come all’inizio di “Eros And Psyche”, canzone che potrebbe benissimo risiedere nella discografia anni ’90 dei Pallas o dei succitati Arena.
“The Thing” è davvero una piccola gemma che brilla di luce propria, tanta enfasi ed emotività fra le note, così è “Through The Veil”. A intervallare i due brani c’è la breve pianistica “2-Minute Waltz”, ricordate l’intro di “Firth Of Fifth” dei Genesis? Bene, l’intento è simile, ma più che altro qui c’è approfondimento, tanto da divenire una vera e propria vetrina a se stante per le capacità esecutive di Pat Sanders. Ho citato molti nomi che di certo chi non segue il genere non ha compreso, a loro dico soltanto che qui c’è musica godibile al 100%, non logorroica o elucubrata, ma intelligente, come nel caso di “The Old Man” o della conclusiva “Cirkus”, rispettosa anche del passato e dei suoi insegnamenti.
Resta anche il fatto che il Neo Prog è un genere sempre gentile e fedele alle armonie semplici, spesso da cantare o fischiettare negli assolo, genericamente di matrice Pinkfloydiana, e “Veil” non si sottrae di certo a questo modus operandi. Un gran bell’album! MS

It is a matter of record to note that even in 2024 the Neo Prog genre continues undaunted on its path, in defiance of trends. I remember in the 1980s that the industry press and various critics, branded the genre short-lived as being considered a useless clone of the masters of the 1970s, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Camel and King Crimson above all. Nothing could be more wrong, bands like Arena, to name but one, brought new life to the context, but for details and insights on this, I refer you to my third book NEO PROG – STORIA E DISCOGRAFIA (Arcana).
Neo Prog has a not very large but loyal audience, perhaps this is also the key. Many bands though not famous, over time have released interesting work, always based on keyboards and guitars in a mix between Genesis, Camel and Pink Floyd.
One lineup made up of elements from various countries and averagely regarded is called Drifting Sun. British-based, the quintet has often self-produced in their long career that sees them take shape in Chesham in about 1994. Eight studio albums not including EPs and numerous singles.
Over time they earn the esteem not only of the public, but also of the musicians themselves, so much so that during defections in the line up, we now see the inclusion of instrumentalists famous on the circuit such as former IQ bassist Jon Jowitt, and former Pendragon drummer Fudge Smith. The band is completed by John 'Jargon' Kosmidis (vocals), Ralph Cardall (guitar, mandolin), and Pat Sanders (keyboards).
"Veil" is thus the new album consisting of eight songs featuring alternating guests such as Suzi James on violin, and numerous backing vocalists. The style is unequivocally true to the line, the names mentioned being confirmation of what has been described.
The opener is titled "Veiled", between piano and keyboards revolving around an old-fashioned dirge, atmospheres dear to Pendragon and all those who orbit around it. The record actually opens with a twelve-minute mini-suite titled "Frailty", here the band proves from the start to be cohesive and very clear-minded. The lyrics are well interpreted by Kosmidis' voice, and we know well that Neo Prog needs both vocal parts and parts bordering on acting, as Fish (Marillion), Alan Red (Pallas), and Peter Nicholls (IQ) have shown us and delighted us in their albums. But Drifting Sun do something more, adding chorality and complex tunes, so much so that even the Yes masters peep in.
Of course, the tempo changes are unfailing, so are the delicate piano parts as at the beginning of "Eros And Psyche", a song that could well reside in the 90s discography of Pallas or the aforementioned Arena.
"The Thing" is really a little gem that shines its own light, so much emphasis and emotion between the notes, so is "Through The Veil". Interspersing the two tracks is the short piano piece "2-Minute Waltz", remember the intro to Genesis' "Firth Of Fifth"? Well, the intent is similar, but more so here there is depth, so much so that it becomes a showcase in its own right for Pat Sanders' performing skills. I have mentioned many names that certainly those who do not follow the genre have not understood, to them I say only that there is 100% enjoyable music here, not logorrheic or elucidated, but intelligent, as in the case of "The Old Man" or the concluding "Cirkus", also respectful of the past and its teachings.
The fact also remains that Neo Prog is a genre that is always kind and faithful to simple harmonies, often to be sung or whistled in solos, generically Pinkfloydian in nature, and "Veil" certainly does not shy away from this modus operandi. A great album! MS
