Il fascino del nord Europa è un fatto appurato, la meravigliosa natura in cui è sommerso, conduce artisticamente parlando, a realizzare lavori concatenati ad esso, alla sua oscurità e freddezza. Noi italici, che siamo avvinghiati alla solarità, subiamo particolarmente questo fascino proveniente da una cultura decisamente distante dalla nostra. La Finlandia, così come la Svezia e la Norvegia, è patria di grandi artisti dediti al Progressive Rock, così tanto da apportare negli anni ’90 nuova linfa ad un genere più o meno agonizzante. Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk, Ageness, Fruitcake, The Flower Kings, Sinkadus… I nomi sarebbero a centinaia, ma oggi veniamo ai nostri tempi con Onségen Ensemble.
Nati nel nord della Finlandia nella zona di Oulu/Hiukkavaara, a metà degli anni 2000, gli Onségen Ensemble non sono una band nel senso tradizionale del termine, ma un vero e proprio collettivo artistico in costante mutamento.  La loro filosofia si basa su una struttura fluida, un nucleo stabile di musicisti circondato da collaboratori ed ospiti che cambiano di album in album, portando ogni volta nuovi strumenti, voci e prospettive. Questa totale libertà stilistica ha permesso loro di evolversi senza rimanere intrappolati nei dogmi di un unico genere musicale.  Prima di arrivare ad “A Tale”, la formazione ha tracciato un percorso solido attraverso quattro capitoli discografici quali “Awalaï” (2016), “Duel” (2018), “Fear” (2020), e l’album fortemente apprezzato per le sue contaminazioni Jazz “Realms” (2022). La formazione attuale è composta da Heikki Hallanoro (percussioni), Tuuli Jartti (violino), Merja Järvelin (cori, artwork), Esa Juujärvi (basso, voce), Samuli Lindberg (batteria), Joni Mäkelä (chitarra), Vilma Pesola (voce), Mikko Vuorela (flauto, armonica), Jarmo Väärä (tromba).
Con “A Tale”, la produzione è stata affidata a Niko Lehdontie, noto per il suo lavoro con realtà di spicco della psichedelia e dell'underground finlandese come Oranssi Pazuzu e Kairon; IRSE!, che ha saputo donare all'album un sottile e ipnotico tocco psichedelico, perfettamente bilanciato da una profonda grazia melodica. A differenza dei dischi Rock tradizionali, qui la musica è prevalentemente strumentale e d'atmosfera, arricchita da vocalizzi evocativi, canti corali o minimali trame testuali usati come veri e propri strumenti aggiuntivi.
Il tema centrale attorno a cui ruota l'intero album è la pace. Il collettivo stesso lo ha descritto così:  "La pace in molti modi sembra l'unico valore che ha ancora un significato reale nel mondo di oggi. La pace è diversità, ciò che spesso non osiamo essere.". I "testi" e i titoli delle canzoni non raccontano quindi storie lineari, ma funzionano come suggestioni poetiche e filosofiche. È un viaggio lirico che affronta il contrasto primordiale tra luce e oscurità, la ricerca di un rifugio interiore e la malinconia legata a come l'essere umano ferisca e calpesti il concetto stesso di armonia e natura. L'album si sviluppa su una durata di circa 42 minuti divisa in 7 tracce, caratterizzate da un suono incredibilmente caldo, organico e stratificato, arricchito da flauti, violini, trombe e percussioni tribali. “Garden Of Celestials” è il brano d'apertura e trasporta immediatamente l'ascoltatore nello spazio cosmico. L'atmosfera è oscura, eterea e solenne. Le trame sonore si stratificano lentamente creando la sensazione di un viaggio notturno o di un'introduzione rituale verso un giardino mitologico. “To Be Led By The Lost” è struggente e a tratti tetra, dove riemergono con forza le radici Jazz della band. Gli arrangiamenti dei fiati si intrecciano a una sezione ritmica deliziosamente malinconica, costruendo una tensione emotiva che cresce minuto dopo minuto. In “A Thought” regna una dimensione di pace e introspezione più pura. Il pezzo si distingue per una qualità quasi tribale e cerimoniale, guidata da percussioni calde e da voci avvolgenti che sembrano sollevarsi per cullarci. Fra i pezzi che ho maggiormente apprezzato c’è “The Word”, costruito su un riff di chitarra magnetico e ripetitivo che crea dipendenza. Su questa base, l'ensemble si diverte a giocare con sfumature che richiamano lo stile delle colonne sonore Spaghetti Western (alla Ennio Morricone), dilatando e manipolando il motivo principale in modo imprevedibile. Molto bella anche la conclusiva “Crystal Waters Of Spring”, qui a sorpresa, la band introduce stupende e avvolgenti sonorità orientali che stravolgono la narrazione.
Chiudete gli occhi e lasciatevi guidare, perchè “A Tale” è il suono prezioso di un'armonia che credevamo perduta. MS

The allure of Northern Europe is an established fact; the wonderful nature in which it is immersed leads, artistically speaking, to the creation of works deeply linked to it, to its darkness and coldness. We Italics, who are clung to sunniness, are particularly subject to this fascination coming from a culture that is decidedly distant from ours. Finland, just like Sweden and Norway, is home to great artists dedicated to Progressive Rock, so much so that in the 90s they brought new life to a genre that was more or less agonizing. Änglagård, Anekdoten, Landberk, Ageness, Fruitcake, The Flower Kings, Sinkadus… The names could be in the hundreds, but today we come to our times with Onségen Ensemble.
Born in northern Finland in the Oulu/Hiukkavaara area in the mid-2000s, Onségen Ensemble are not a band in the traditional sense of the term, but a true artistic collective in constant mutation. Their philosophy is based on a fluid structure, a stable core of musicians surrounded by collaborators and guests who change from album to album, bringing new instruments, voices, and perspectives each time. This total stylistic freedom has allowed them to evolve without remaining trapped in the dogmas of a single musical genre. Before arriving at “A Tale”, the line-up traced a solid path through four discographical chapters such as “Awalaï” (2016), “Duel” (2018), “Fear” (2020), and the highly appreciated album for its Jazz contaminations “Realms” (2022). The current line-up consists of Heikki Hallanoro (percussion), Tuuli Jartti (violin), Merja Järvelin (backing vocals, artwork), Esa Juujärvi (bass, vocals), Samuli Lindberg (drums), Joni Mäkelä (guitar), Vilma Pesola (vocals), Mikko Vuorela (flute, harmonica), Jarmo Väärä (trumpet).
With “A Tale”, the production was entrusted to Niko Lehdontie, known for his work with prominent entities of the Finnish psychedelic and underground scene such as Oranssi Pazuzu and Kairon; IRSE!, who was able to give the album a subtle and hypnotic psychedelic touch, perfectly balanced by a profound melodic grace. Unlike traditional Rock records, the music here is predominantly instrumental and atmospheric, enriched by evocative vocalizations, choral chants, or minimal textual textures used as real additional instruments.
The central theme around which the entire album revolves is peace. The collective itself described it as follows: "Peace in many ways seems to be the only value that still has real meaning in today's world. Peace is diversity, what we often do not dare to be.". The "lyrics" and the song titles do not therefore tell linear stories, but function as poetic and philosophical suggestions. It is a lyrical journey that addresses the primordial contrast between light and darkness, the search for an inner refuge, and the melancholy linked to how human beings wound and trample upon the very concept of harmony and nature. The album develops over a duration of about 42 minutes divided into 7 tracks, characterized by an incredibly warm, organic, and layered sound, enriched by flutes, violins, trumpets, and tribal percussion. “Garden Of Celestials” is the opening track and immediately transports the listener into cosmic space. The atmosphere is dark, ethereal, and solemn. The sonic textures layer slowly, creating the feeling of a night journey or a ritual introduction towards a mythological garden. “To Be Led By The Lost” is poignant and at times bleak, where the band's Jazz roots re-emerge with strength. The brass arrangements intertwine with a deliciously melancholic rhythm section, building an emotional tension that grows minute by minute. In “A Thought” a dimension of purer peace and introspection reigns. The piece stands out for an almost tribal and ceremonial quality, guided by warm percussion and enveloping voices that seem to lift up to cradle us. Among the pieces I appreciated the most is “The Word”, built on a magnetic and repetitive guitar riff that is highly addictive. On this basis, the ensemble enjoys playing with nuances that recall the style of Spaghetti Western soundtracks (à la Ennio Morricone), dilating and manipulating the main motif in an unpredictable way. Very beautiful is also the concluding “Crystal Waters Of Spring”, where surprisingly, the band introduces wonderful and enveloping oriental sonorities that completely overturn the narrative.
Close your eyes and let yourself be guided, because “A Tale” is the precious sound of a harmony we thought was lost. MS
