Gli Echorec nascono a Bristol nel 2015 inizialmente come un trio, unito dall'amore condiviso per il Rock concettuale e narrativo guidato da tempi dispari e strutture articolate. La formazione si allarga ed evolve nel 2020 con l'ingresso in pianta stabile del tastierista Alex Adams, mossa che permette al gruppo di riprodurre dal vivo le complesse architetture sonore e le stratificazioni spaziali create in studio. La band è attualmente composta da Julian Kirk (voce, chitarra), Jake Aubrey (batteria), Alex Adams (tastiere, cori), e Taibah Orpin (basso, cori).
Il loro album di debutto, “The Island”, pubblicato nel 2020, ha riscosso un ottimo successo di critica nell'underground britannico, tanto da far inserire la band tra i progetti più promettenti dell'anno dalla storica rivista Prog Magazine. Dopo una lunga gestazione, nel giugno del 2026 esce il tanto atteso seguito, “DreamState”, celebrato con un tour e un concerto di lancio ufficiale a Bristol. La proposta stilistica viene definita Post Prog massimalista, un connubio tra la spinta ritmica e la complessità di formazioni come Rush e Porcupine Tree, l'intimità melodica di stampo Radiohead o Jeff Buckley e i paesaggi psichedelici e immersivi mutuati dai Pink Floyd. Come avrete capito, molta carne al fuoco per palati sopraffini.
L'album è composto da 6 tracce e ruota attorno a un concept suggestivo incarnato dal titolo stesso, ossia l'esplorazione degli stati del sogno ("DreamState"), il confine labile tra percezione e realtà, l'introspezione psicologica e l'alienazione moderna.
“Heartland” inizia la musica con piano e voce toccante oltre che arricchito di buone coralità. Ottima la parte centrale Neo Prog con un solo di chitarra che rimanda ai tempi dei migliori Marillion. Si parla dell'attaccamento alle proprie radici o a un luogo sicuro della mente che inizia però a vacillare ed essere distorto sotto il peso delle ansie quotidiane.
“The Watcher” potrebbe benissimo risiedere nella discografia dei Gazpacho, un mix fra Radiohead e Muse in bilico fra malinconia e Rock energico.
In “Born To Lead”, emerge chiaramente l'influenza dei Rush nel dinamismo dei cambi di tempo e nelle interazioni millimetriche tra la sezione ritmica e i ricami della chitarra. La voce di Julian Kirk sfoggia graffio e teatralità espressiva. Fra i momenti più spensierati del disco grazie anche ad un gradevole apporto della chitarra immersa in un riff dalla facile memorizzazione.
Gli Echorec fanno la voce grossa con “Behind Closed Eyes”, pezzo altamente Prog come attitudine e storicità, le salite sonore che si placano ricordano molto sia i primi Spock’s Beard che alcuni Porcupine Tree. Sono dunque le eccellenti parti strumentali a convincere e coinvolgere di più.
Deciso cambio di rotta con “Blood Moon”, orecchiabile, delicato e ricco di patos, ma  ci pensano gli undici minuti del brano conclusivo “Ghost In The Dream” a far capire al meglio chi sono  gli Echores, dentro un mix di tutte le loro caratteristiche descritte sino a qui, convogliate in unico brano altamente coinvolgente.
“DreamState” non è soltanto la conferma del talento cristallino degli Echorec, ma rappresenta un eccezionale manifesto di ciò che l'indipendenza artistica può produrre oggi. Muovendosi con disinvoltura tra la complessità geometrica del Prog moderno e una sensibilità melodica spiccata, il quartetto di Bristol firma un'opera coesa, matura e priva di cali di tensione. Un ascolto imprescindibile per chiunque voglia capire dove sta andando oggi il Post Prog Moderno britannico. MS

Echorec were formed in Bristol in 2015 initially as a trio, united by a shared love for conceptual and narrative Rock driven by odd time signatures and complex structures. The line-up expanded and evolved in 2020 with the permanent addition of keyboardist Alex Adams, a move that allows the group to reproduce live the intricate sonic architectures and spatial stratifications created in the studio. The band is currently composed of Julian Kirk (vocals, guitar), Jake Aubrey (drums), Alex Adams (keyboards, backing vocals), and Taibah Orpin (bass, backing vocals).
Their debut album, “The Island”, released in 2020, met with great critical acclaim in the British underground, enough to earn the band a spot among the most promising projects of the year by the historic Prog Magazine. After a long gestation period, the long-awaited follow-up, “DreamState”, was released in June 2026, celebrated with a tour and an official launch gig in Bristol. Their stylistic proposal is defined as maximalist Post Prog, a blend of the rhythmic drive and complexity of outfits like Rush and Porcupine Tree, the melodic intimacy reminiscent of Radiohead or Jeff Buckley, and the psychedelic, immersive landscapes borrowed from Pink Floyd. As you may have gathered, there is plenty of meat on the bone for refined palates.
The album consists of 6 tracks and revolves around a suggestive concept embodied by the title itself, namely the exploration of dream states ("DreamState"), the thin line between perception and reality, psychological introspection, and modern alienation.
“Heartland” opens the music with touching piano and vocals, further enriched by fine vocal harmonies. The central Neo Prog section is excellent, featuring a guitar solo that harks back to the days of the best Marillion. It speaks of the attachment to one's roots or to a safe place in the mind that, however, begins to waver and become distorted under the weight of daily anxieties.
“The Watcher” could easily belong in Gazpacho's discography, a mix between Radiohead and Muse balanced between melancholy and energetic Rock.
In “Born To Lead”, the influence of Rush clearly emerges in the dynamism of the time signature changes and in the millimetric interactions between the rhythmic section and the intricate guitar work. Julian Kirk's vocals showcase grit and expressive theatricality. It stands among the more lighthearted moments of the record, thanks also to a pleasant guitar contribution embedded in an easily memorable riff.
Echorec make a bold statement with “Behind Closed Eyes”, a piece that is highly Prog in both attitude and historical feel; the building sonic swells that then subside are very reminiscent of both early Spock’s Beard and certain Porcupine Tree. It is therefore the excellent instrumental parts that prove most convincing and engaging.
A decisive change of direction comes with “Blood Moon”, catchy, delicate, and full of pathos, but it is the eleven minutes of the closing track “Ghost In The Dream” that best showcase who Echores [sic] really are, blending all their characteristics described so far into a single, highly engaging song.
“DreamState” is not only a confirmation of Echorec's crystalline talent, but it represents an outstanding manifesto of what artistic independence can produce today. Moving with ease between the geometric complexity of modern Prog and a striking melodic sensitivity, the Bristol quartet delivers a cohesive, mature work free of any drop in tension. An essential listen for anyone wishing to understand where British Modern Post Prog is heading today. MS
