Il
quarto lavoro in studio dei canadesi Enigmatic Sound Machines, intitolato
"Divided By One", rappresenta il punto di massima maturazione e, per
certi versi, una vera e propria mutazione genetica per il progetto di base a
Montreal.
I
lavori precedenti avevano abituato gli ascoltatori a bilanciamenti elettronici
molto spiccati, questo nuovo capitolo spinge con decisione sul pedale di un
Rock Progressivo cinematico, cupo e decisamente più pesante e stratificato.
Il
progetto nasce dall'amicizia di una vita tra due figure cardine della scena
elettronica e sperimentale canadese, Jeremie Arrobas (voce solista,
sintetizzatori, tastiere e macchine sonore) e Thomas Szirmay (voce enigmatica e
sound machines). La loro è stata una traiettoria discografica incredibilmente
produttiva composta da tre album in tre anni, partendo dal debutto synth-pop di
“Telepathic Waves” (2023), passando per le atmosfere contemplative di “Hierarchies
Of Angels” (2024) e le trame cariche di sassofono di “Imperfect Silence”
(2025). La
vera svolta storica di “Divided By One” risiede però nell'espansione della
line-up. Da duo prettamente orientato al lavoro di studio, gli Enigmatic Sound
Machines si sono stabilizzati in un vero e proprio quartetto granitico grazie
all'ingresso ufficiale di due veterani di calibro internazionale: Alain
Bellaïche alle chitarre (già noto per le sue collaborazioni storiche, tra cui
spiccano i francesi Heldon), e Hansford Rowe al basso (colonna portante della
leggendaria formazione dei Gong).
I
testi affrontano il disorientamento dell'individuo moderno all'interno di una
società divisa, i conflitti ciclici dell'umanità e il senso di disillusione
collettiva. Tuttavia, la scrittura del duo non scade mai nel nichilismo
assoluto, piuttosto a dominare è una tensione psicologica costante dove le
atmosfere d'ombra vengono sistematicamente squarciate da momenti di improvvisa
e salvifica chiarezza melodica.
La
title-track apre il disco dettando immediatamente la nuova linea editoriale, un
Prog cupo e avvolgente. Il brano è impreziosito dalle chitarre ospiti di Steve
Bonino. “Chaos Dreaming” con quasi dieci
minuti di durata, è uno dei fulcri creativi del disco. Qui la band mette in
mostra tutta la propria ambizione strumentale e le proprie radici Progressive.
Il basso di Hansford Rowe tesse trame intricate su cui si innestano cambi di
tempo e lunghi passaggi in cui l'elettronica dialoga in modo serrato con le
chitarre.
“Sirensong”
è un brano più ipnotico e d'atmosfera, dove la voce di Jeremie e i cori di Anna
evocano il magnetismo oscuro e pericoloso richiamato dal titolo, sorretto da
pattern elettronici vintage molto curati. Atmosfere eteree care al moderno Post Prog.
Con
“Heaven's Rain” si alternano momenti di grande aperture melodica a sezioni
ritmiche più serrate. Tuoni ma anche gocce paradisiache. Gli altri quattro
brani li lascio alla vostra curiosità se andate su Bandcamp, in linea di
massima questo è il senso dell’album.
Chi
si aspettava una pigra ripetizione dei canoni synth-pop dei primi lavori
rimarrà spiazzato, e felicemente sorpreso. “Divided By One” è la
dimostrazione di come il Progressive Rock odierno possa (e debba) guardare
avanti, poi potrà anche piacere o meno. MS

The fourth studio album by the Canadian outfit
Enigmatic Sound Machines, titled "Divided By One", represents the
point of maximum maturation and, in some ways, a true genetic mutation for the
Montreal-based project.
Previous works had accustomed listeners to very
pronounced electronic balances; this new chapter pushes decisively on the pedal
of a cinematic, dark, and decidedly heavier and more layered Progressive Rock.
The project was born from a lifelong friendship
between two pivotal figures of the Canadian electronic and experimental scene,
Jeremie Arrobas (lead vocals, synthesizers, keyboards, and sound machines) and
Thomas Szirmay (enigmatic voice and sound machines). Theirs has been an
incredibly productive recording trajectory consisting of three albums in three
years, starting from the synth-pop debut of “Telepathic Waves” (2023), passing
through the contemplative atmospheres of “Hierarchies Of Angels” (2024), and
the saxophone-laden textures of “Imperfect Silence” (2025). The true historical
turning point of “Divided By One” lies, however, in the expansion of the
line-up. From a purely studio-oriented duo, Enigmatic Sound Machines have
stabilized into a true, rock-solid quartet thanks to the official entry of two
international-caliber veterans: Alain Bellaïche on guitars (already known for
his historic collaborations, most notably with the French band Heldon), and
Hansford Rowe on bass (a backbone of the legendary Gong line-up).
Lyrically and visually, the album revolves around the
concepts of tension, resilience, fragmentation, and transformation. The artwork
itself shows a human profile literally split and geometricized by sharp lines.
The lyrics address the disorientation of the modern
individual within a divided society, humanity's cyclical conflicts, and a sense
of collective disillusionment. However, the duo's writing never lapses into
absolute nihilism; rather, what dominates is a constant psychological tension
where shadowy atmospheres are systematically pierced by moments of sudden and
saving melodic clarity.
The title-track opens the record, immediately
dictating the new editorial line, a dark and enveloping Prog. The song is
embellished by the guest guitars of Steve Bonino. “Chaos Dreaming”, with a
duration of nearly ten minutes, is one of the creative hubs of the album. Here
the band showcases all its instrumental ambition and its Progressive roots.
Hansford Rowe's bass weaves intricate textures upon which time signature
changes and long passages are built, where electronics engage in a tight
dialogue with the guitars.
“Sirensong” is a more hypnotic and atmospheric track,
where Jeremie's vocals and Anna's backing choruses evoke the dark and dangerous
magnetism recalled by the title, supported by highly refined vintage electronic
patterns. Ethereal atmospheres dear to modern Post Prog.
Next is “Pool of Mirrors”, an introspective and
psychological piece that plays on the theme of self-reflection. Musically, it
moves on suspended dynamics before opening up into rich sonic stratifications.
With “Heaven's Rain”, moments of grand melodic
openings alternate with tighter rhythmic sections. Thunder but also heavenly
drops. I leave the other four tracks to your curiosity if you go to Bandcamp;
in general terms, this is the meaning of the album.
Anyone expecting a lazy repetition of the synth-pop
canons of the early works will be thrown off, and happily surprised. “Divided
By One” is the demonstration of how today's Progressive Rock can (and must)
